Ask students to define the word citizen.
What are some good qualities of a citizen?
Supplement their responses by reminding them that citizens have both rights and
responsibilities.
Ask students to give examples of rights and responsibilities citizens have.
Mini-Lesson: 12-15 min
Begin reading aloud the text to the students. Asking students to join me in
reading when a vocabulary word is in a sentence. Ask for students to volunteer to
read the headings before I start reading. Analyze pictures in the text and read
captions associated with them.
Work time:
Throughout the lesson students will be following along with me in the text and
filling in a vocabulary sheet provided to them at the beginning of the unit. At
various points throughout the lesson I will be stopping and asking students
questions where I will then use Think, Pair, Share or cold calling depending on how
much I gauge the level of student engagement and overall participation.

Who is an everyday hero in your life?
Students will draw a picture who their everyday hero is in their life and write a
caption to go along with their picture about who their everyday hero is and why?
** Extension for students who finish early- how does this person compare to
someone from history that you know of or have just read about?
Then I will be asking for volunteers to share what they made.
** If time is too short this will be an open discussion.

law.

Page 256- How did Dolores Huerta help farmworkers? By helping them become
citizens and earn money.

Page 257- What is an everyday hero? Someone in a community who does


something important and sets and example.
