Topic/Concept/Skill:
Multiplication
Related Standard:

Background:
The students will use their knowledge of how to multiply simple fractions

Main Objective of Instruction:

By the end of the lesson TSWBAT demonstrate their understanding of multiplication facts.
Teacher Materials/Resources:
Playing Cards
White Board
Dry Erase Markers
Homework Papers
Chrome books
http://www.arcademics.com/games (Link for Games)
Paper with the related cards on it
Student Materials:
Paper
Pencil
Laptops
Anticipatory Set (Introductory Approach):
I will have big playing cards when the students walk in for them to see. They will get excited
because they will want to know why I have the playing cards.

Instructional Procedures (Whole Group):

1. The students come in and start their morning work
2. They will see the big playing cards and will want to know what they are for
3. I will inform them that they are for later in the lesson
4. They will then come to the carpet with their white boards and markers
5. I will put a few multiplication problems on the white board and have them answer them on
their boards
6. The students will hold their boards up when they have all the answers
7. We will then go over them and work through them together on the carpet
8. When every student understands I will put a few more problems up (These will be a little
harder)
9. Again the students will put their answers on their boards and hold them up
10. We will then go over them as a class
11. When every student understands I will have them put their boards down
12. I will show them the playing cards and ask them what they think we will be doing for
the day
13. I will give them 5-10 seconds to think of an answer (Answers include: War, Go Fish)
14. I will call on some students
15. If no student answers I will tell the students that we are playing a math game that is
very similar to war
16. I will ask if any of the students have played war
17. I will give them 5-10 seconds to think of the answers
18. I will then call on a few students
19. I will then explain the game of war to the students
20. When every student understands I will explain the way the we will play
21. I will show them the cards and tell them that ace is for 1, 2 is for 2 ext.
22. I will tell them if they flip an ace and a 2 it would be 1x2 and the answer would be 2
23. I will then do a few more examples on the board
24. I will then demonstrate the game with another student
25. They will flip a card the same time I do and the first to multiply them together is the
winner
26. We will do this for a few rounds
27. I will then make sure every student understands the rules
28. I will send them back to their seats
29. I will have the students pair up with the person next to them
30. I will hand them a stack of cards
31. The students will play the game for about 5-10 minutes
32. When time is up I will have the students put their cards away and have them get
their chrome books out
33. I will open the website http://www.arcademics.com/games on my computer
34. I will show them the games they will play
35. They can choose from any of the 4th grade multiplication games
36. I will then let them play those for 5-10 minutes
37. When the time is up I will have the student put their chrome books away
38. When they get back to their seats I will hand them their homework
39. When all the students have their homework I will close on what we learned

Provisions for Individual and/or Group Differences:

Provision 1: For my students with a visual problem: I will make sure to have their partner, or
another adult (if any available to help) sit with the student and read the facts to them. I will ask if
they want to try the games on the computer, if not I will allow them to start on their homework at
their seat.
Provision 2: For my students with an IEP for behavior: I will make sure they understand the
game and know it is just for fun. I will also have directions for the game typed out for them so if
they forget they can go back and look at the directions.

Closure:
I will talk to the students and have them do a few multiplication problems on their board and ask
them what they liked about the games we played

Evaluation of Learning:
After the lesson is over I will have the students write 5 multiplication facts that they find
challenging and then they will trade with the person sitting next to them and they will solve their
problems then exchange answers.

This will be for the homework:

-1 to -10 = A
-11 to -20 = B
-21 to -30 = C
-31 to -40 = D
-41 to more = F
Independent Practice:
They will have a worksheet that they will take home and bring back to me for a grade
