19 March 2017 Q: What are the indicators of Safety Culture? The following are indicators of safety culture but are not limited. 1- There is a visible leadership commitment at all levels of the organization. Leadership commitment to safety will always show. What is valued is what will typically be done. In a good safety culture, leaders show commitment through actions and how they empower others to win with their safety initiative.
2- All employees in the organization show a working knowledge of
Health & Safety topics. When you have value for something, its worth time and energy to excel in it. All employees are aware of health & Safety and therefore make use of all knowledge gained through training and diligently use the resources put at their disposal to work without risk of being hurt. They are competent in health and safety, they are fully aware of their roles and responsibilities.
3- There is a clear objective of the desired culture the organization
wishes to achieve. The organization set goals, write them down and have a corresponding strategy to measure where they are leading or lagging and also a laid down plan to achieve the goals set.
4- There is a lack of competing priorities Safety comes first all the
times. All stakeholders of the organization from highest authority give unconditional regards to safety & Health and empowers their subordinates to follow same as they go about their jobs.
5- There is visible evidence of financial investment in health & safety.
6- Safety is a condition of employment.
7- Safety is viewed as an investment not a cost.
An organization that performs well in safety also performs well in business. Knowing the true value of safety, organizations with a great safety culture view safety as an investment not a costly and dreaded expenditure.
8- Employees feel comfortable reporting safety & health issues to their
supervisors.
9- Safety is the first items on the agenda of every meeting.
