2.6: predict whether an ionic compound is relatively
Learner
Outcome soluble in water, using a solubility chart
Students will be able to observe precipitates being formed and
Learning
using a solubility chart determine what the precipitate is after
Objectives
mixing two ionic solutions together.
Resources
Science Focus 10
Consulted
Gloves
Lab smocks
Goggles
Test tubes (6 per group)
Materials Test tube racks (1 per group)
Needed 1.1mol/L solution of calcium chloride, sodium nitrate, and
sodium phosphate
MSDS for calcium chloride, sodium nitrate, and sodium
phosphate
Labels or tape and marker
Have the test tubes for each group already poured and labelled
with each solution so they can just come up and grab the rack
Prep
with their three solutions all ready they will still need labels for
their empty tubes where they will be mixing things.

Today we are doing a lab, with real chemicals that can be

harmful. This means we have to be on best behaviour and
cautious and attentive! If I see anyone acting in an unsafe manor
they will have to leave during the lab and get the results from
Introduction group members when the lab is done.
10 minutes Labs will be handed in as a full report title, question, prediction,
procedure flow chart, observation chart, conclusion, and
questions are required (1-6)
Talk about disposal of each solution and what is expected. (write
this on board)
Body Students will write the title and question down that is provided
50 minutes on page 86
They will then read the procedure and make some predictions
as they do this before they can start writing predictions help
them come up with the chemical formulas for each solution
being used. (Write these on board for reference)
Students will make a flow chart maybe with teacher, or start it
with teacher about the procedure (1 per group) can be written
on board or drawn
Show them the observation chart and describe how it should be
used
Make sure safety wear is provided and put on by every student.
Go over what is expected if the bell goes for lunch and
students are half way done or something! put test tubes
on side of counter or go into lunch?
2 student from a group come carefully get the test tube rack for
their group
Groups will perform steps 1-5 then have teacher check their
observation chart before they can safely dispose of their
materials
Students will then begin to work on their conclusions the
results of what happened (what made precipitates and were their
predictions correct)
Then work on the analyze and conclude and apply (consider
solubility charts!) (questions 1-6, do not do question 7).

Make sure students hand in their lab write ups.

For students without safety contracts handed in- have
videos for them to watch the solutions and they will work in
Closure
hallway with chromebooks still expected to full lab write
10 minutes
up will go in hall on step where everyone puts safety
gear on.

For observation of safety practices being used, as well as lab

write ups will be used as formative assessment as to whether
Assessment students understand what observations are required to know a
precipitate has been formed and how to use a solubility chart to
predict the precipitate.
