SL3000/113 WEC Technical Specification

1 General Description

The Sinovel SL3000/113 wind energy converter (WEC) of double-fed

asynchronous generator with a rated power of 3000 kW, 113.3 m rotor
diameter, 50 Hz grid frequency and a three-blade rotor.

2 Mechanical Designs

2.1 Rotor

The SL3000/113 WEC has a three-bladed upwind rotor. The blades are
continuously positioned to help optimize the pitch angle. The rotor features
high operational reliability and efficiency. The optimized pitch-control system
helps to substantially reduce maintenance work.

2.2 Blades

The length of single blade is 55m. Aerodynamic airfoil and blade profile make blade
achieve higher aerodynamic efficiency under the lowest load condition. Material of
rotor blade is glass fibre / epoxide resin, glue and gel paint. The coat of blade is rain,
snow and sand proof and good wearing-resistant.

2.3 Blade Bearing

The blade bearings are double row 4-point contact ball bearings.

Blade Bearing
Type Ball bearing
Lubrication Automatic lubrication
Table 2-3: Blade bearing data.

2.4 Pitch System

The blades can be turned out of the rotor plane by about 90 degrees and therefore
act as aerodynamically brakes. During normal operation the pitch motors hold the
rotor blades in a defined position via the right gear at the pitch bearing, mounted to
the blade root.

The aerodynamic brake is applied by varying the rotor blade pitch by means of
motors. In the event of a fault (e.g. power loss) the pitch motor is powered by super-
capacitor (one for each drive) in the hub, and can therefore still control the pitch.
Consequently the WEC is completely safe ("fail safe design"). If one pitch drive can
not be activated (e.g. broken cable, broken power supply to hub), the other two
blades can still be turned into feathering position.

2.6 Main Shaft

There is a compact main shaft between hub and nacelle, which reduces the whole
turbines weight. The drive train adopts back to back configured dual-column
conical main bearing. The main shaft increases the drive trains bearing capacity by
being applied accurate preload. Therefore the gearbox only bears from torque,
which increases the turbines reliability and lifetime.

2.7 Main Frame

The main frame is the foundation for the drive train, which transmits forces from the
rotor to the tower, through the yaw system. The bottom surface is machined and
connected to the yaw bearing and the yaw gears are bolted to the front of the main
frame. The main frame transfers the loads from the drive chain to the yaw system
and holds the generator over a bolted supporting structure.

2.8 Main Bearing

The main bearing, which is a back-to-back double-row tapered roller bearing, is

mounted on main shaft via inner ring. The outer ring of the main bearing is bolted
on the main frame. All the loads from the hub are transferred to the mainframe via
the outer ring of bearing except the input torque which is transferred to the gearbox.

will work for a protective shutdown.

4.4 Lightning Protection System

The lightning protection device of blade consists of aluminum apex lightning

receptors, two copper plates placed on different positions in the middle part of the
blade, and internal cables. It can release the lightning energy instantly from the
metal apex to the wires placed inside the blade and to the blade root flange. The
energy will go through the hub, nacelle and tower lightning protection device,
ultimately reach the earthing system on the ground.

The local earthing electrodes of each electrical device are integrated into the bus
bar in the nacelle, which connects to the ring grounding through the cable in the
tower. The Lightning Protection System is designed according to IEC standards.

4.5 Earthing

The grounding system integrates all the local grounding electrodes as a whole,
which are conductively connected to similar-function metal parts (e.g. tower base,
reinforcement parts, metal cable jackets) and grounding conductors.

The individual grounding electrodes are connected individually to the equipotent

bonding conductor to ensure that the grounding system resistance can be
measured at any time.

Three connections to the foundation grounding electrodes and three connections to

the ring electrodes are generally used, which lead separately to the equipotent
bonding conductor. The grounding conductors must be protected against corrosion.

The resistance of grounding system must be equal or less than 4.

4.6 Corrosion Protection

Classification of corrosion protection is according to ISO 12944-2.

9.4 Reactive Power Capability

Reactive power is produced by the rotor converter; therefore traditional capacitors

are not used in the turbine.

At maximum active and reactive power, the turbine reduces either active or reactive
power depending on which type of power has priority (E.g. if reactive power has
priority, the active power is reduced).

Based on the performance of SL3000 wind turbine, in Figure 9.2, the P-Q curve
could be satisfied. It is the basic operating range of the reactive power output. The
range is adjustable with specified requirements.
