THE STAGES OF
A READING LESSON
Unit Description

Participants are familiarized with the three-stage structure of a reading lesson pre-, while-
and post-reading. Teachers also explore the purposes of each lesson stage and the
activities typically carried out in each stage.

Unit Outcomes

By the end of this unit, you will


- know the three stages of a reading lesson
- be able to state the purposes of each stage, and
- be aware of the types of activities that can be carried out in each stage.

ACTIVITY 1: Getting to Know the Reading Lesson Stages

Objective
To be aware of the three stages of a reading lesson and the purposes of the stages

Suggested Instructional Sequence

1. Get participants to read the text - The Stages of a Reading Lesson.


2. Ask participants if they use this structure for their lessons. Ask them to share other
reading lesson structures that they might have used.
3. Discuss the purposes of the three stages. Emphasize that:
the Pre-reading stage provides activities that prepare students to read the
text
the While-reading stage provides activities that enable students to engage
(interact) with and comprehend the text
the Post-reading stage provides activities that evaluate and extend
students comprehension of the text.
4. Get participants to suggest the types of activities that can be provided in each
lesson stage.
5. Encourage participants to raise questions related to the stages of a reading lesson.
Get participants involved in the discussion of these questions. Note that it is
important for the facilitator to correct any misconceptions that participants might
have pertaining to the purposes of the stages of the reading lesson.

Objective
To be aware of the three stages of a reading lesson and the purposes of the stages

Suggested Instructional Sequence

(a)
1. Inform participants that a number of activities for a reading text are provided.
2. Ask participants to skim the text.
3. Get participants to work individually to scrutinize each activity. Ask participants to
figure out the purpose of each activity and to indicate if it is suited to the pre-,
while- or post-reading stage of the lesson.
4. Get participants to discuss their answers with their partners.
5. Discuss the answers with the class.

1. Inform participants that a jumbled set of teaching steps for a reading


comprehension lesson are provided.
2. Ask participants to skim through the reading text - Sea Today, Gone Tomorrow.
3. Get participants to scrutinize the teaching steps. Ask participants to first indicate if
a particular step should be carried out in the pre -, while or post-reading stage.
4. Get participants to discuss their answers with their partners.
5. Discuss the answers with the class.
