DAY 1
DAY 2
Check-out hotel
- First stop at City Hall at the summer capital of the Philippines, Baguio
City we have an orientation about what are the activities and projects
that will be done in the city. Engr. Evelyn B. Cayat, En.P. presented map
where it has been labeled in different purposes like Commercial Areas,
Residential , Recreational areas, and Industrial. They also discuss the
number of population ,and the annual income of the city which is big
enough for a small city, I think because of the good weather and
nature view places the tourist are attracted. In their map they reveal
that Baguio City has been having a problem in the land use, the
authority notice that the population has been increasing in every
period of time so they are lacking the area for residential purposes and
planning to expand the place. Baguio has an ordinance that
skyscrapers must be limited in only 6 storeys and Baguio is really
concern in the environment cutting of trees especially Pine trees is a
serious offense in their law. Cutting 1 pine tree is equal to 10 pine
trees.

6:00am Breakfast
12:00nn Lunch
1:00pm Steel Asia Manufacturing Corporation
- Steel Asia Corp. is one of the main contributor for steel rebars use in
Construction. Engr. Edward Vincent Saping discuss the different
characteristic of steel according to the color that can be found at the
end of the steel rebars. They also introduces their other branches
especially the biggest branch they have that is located at Bunawan,
Davao City and there Melting Plant located at the Calaca. Their raw
materials came from the scrap metals which are been process in their
Melting Plant, the raw material used is called billets which are
rectangular steels having a length of 12 meters. Billets are not only
came from scrap metals but some of them is been imported and these
billets will be ordered in accordance in Philippine Standards, when
billets is been shipped in the processing plant they will be undergoing
some of the test so that it will be distinguish if the material will pass in
our standards, these test are the Physical, Chemical, and the
Mechanical. Physical Test will identify the ductility of the steel, the
Chemical Test will identify the amount of Carbon in the steel which
about not more than 0.33%, and the Mechanical Test which identify the
maximum yield strength of the steel.
5:00pm Dinner
Breakfast
First stop in the 4th day is the Fluor Daniel. The main speaker is Engr.
Jerome Tan who graduated at University of the Philippines. He inspires
me a lot as he gave us an inspirational talk and share his experiences
and accomplishments in life. He also give us some advice in decision
making in the future. Fluor Daniel is a large company that contracts
large project all over the world. One of the projects they finished is the
oil refinery in Saudi, they also involved in Energy and Chemicals, Power
Supply, Mining and Metals, Life Sciences and Advanced Manufacturing.
12:00nn Lunch
- 2ND stop is DMCI a company that design, construct buildings and other
infrastructure that provide satisfaction to their clients. First they
discuss the location of the sky way that we are about to visit. They
shared to us the methodology of the project. Constructing a skyway in
the middle of the traffic can cause disturbance to the flow of the
vehicles. Thus, they used a road construction technique called
Sosrubahu. Sosrobahu is a road construction technique which allows
long stretches of flyovers to be constructed above existing main roads
with a minimum of disruption to the traffic. The technique was
designed by Tjokorda Raka Sukawati and involves the construction of
the horizontal supports for the highway beside the existing road, which
is then lifted and turned 90 degrees angle before being placed on the
top of the vertical supports to form the flyover pylons. This technique is
of considerable value in increasing road mileage in large cities where
there is a restricted space for new roads and where the closure of
existing roads for the length of time to build a flyover using normal
construction techniques would impose significant economic costs.
- For the Pier head of the skyway, they used a pre stressed concrete.
Concrete performance can allow longer spans, reduced structural
thicknesses, and material savings to be realized compared to
reinforced concrete. Typical applications range through high-rise
buildings, residential slabs, foundation systems, bridge and dam
structures, silos and tanks, industrial pavements and nuclear
containment structures
