The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC


2009-2010

Part A
The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards
quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year.

Our institution has a clear vision and mission and all our programmes are well planned to
achieve it. The plan of action chalked by IQAC for the academic year 2009– 2010
towards quality enhancement is as follows:

Details of the plans of the institution for the academic year 2009– 2010:

1. To begin lectures on the first working day i.e. 08.06.2009


2. To ensure 100% utilization of lecture timings.
3. To prepare and publish yearly academic calendar before the beginning of the
academic year.
4. To improve the facilities to students in terms of academics, sports and co-
curricular activities.
5. Encourage teachers to make use of modern teaching methods like audio-visual
screening, role plays, simulation, field visits and surveys.
6. To make the subjects more interesting by conducting mock interviews, visits,
dramas, assignments, presentations, projects amongst others.
7. To provide extra coaching for subjects which are difficult by conducting
sessions other than prescribed by the university.
8. To keep the guardians updated about their wards performance and suggest ways
to improve the same.

9. To appoint guardian teachers for the weak students.
10. To help meritorious students achieve rank at the university exams, ‘Advance
Learner’s Programme to be stressed on.
11. To identify weak students and encourage mentoring by management, corporate
guests, teachers and students.
12. To identify talented students and encourage students to participate in
competitions at different levels.
13. To recognize student grievances and promptly redress them.
14. To provide infrastructure comparable to international standards.
15. To improve accessibility of carefully selected print and non-print resources via
library OPAC and other exceptionally responsive services.
16. Our college encourages teachers to participate in workshops, seminars at state,
national and international level.
17. To encourage our staff to register for research and provide facilities for the
same.
18. To continue with the Centralized Assessment and Centralized Question Paper
Setting Programme for effective functioning of the Examination Cell.
19. To arrange special programmes for non-teaching staff.
20. To continue with our social endeavours to strengthen our initiatives for social
development.
21. To voice our opinions on various issues concerning the society and spread out
social awareness through our College Magazine.
22. To conduct greater number of seminars and workshops of National and
International importance at our campus.
23. To encourage cross cultural learning through our international exchange
programme.
24. To organize visits for the students to various research centers for advanced
knowledge in the field of biotechnology.
25. To strengthen the institution-industry linkages.
26. To improve schemes for the financially backward students.
27. To care for the environment by creating more awareness.

The IQAC has taken initiatives towards fulfillment of the above objectives
which have been stated in the following pages. Progress was made in the following
areas during the year.

 Academic Calendar (2010-2011) was prepared before the


beginning of the first term of the academic year 2010-2011 which helps us to plan
in advance and decide steps to be initiated to achieve goals.
 For overall development of students we have been improving
upon facilities available for teaching-learning, sports and cultural aspects.
 To enable teachers to make use of modern technology in
teaching, we have been upgrading our classrooms and computer labs with relevant
technology.
 To give full support for the improvement of the academic
performance of the students, teachers took extra lectures for students whose
subject background is weak.
 We have a guardian teacher system to allow mentoring of
students who need special attention.
 The meritorious students were guided under ‘Advance Learner
Programme’. Students were asked to solve university question papers for past
three years and these were assessed by the teachers.
 We conducted inter-collegiate cultural competitions in the year
2009-2010 in which 18 college participated.
 Grievance cell functions to take care of problems put forward by
the staff and students.
 The College is located in New Panvel, in a multi dimensional
education complex, which has state-of-the-art infrastructure, providing the right
environment for learning. Increase in infrastructure facility is an ongoing process
at our campus. Being a growing institution; augmentation of infrastructural
facilities is a never-ending process.
 Library resources were augmented from time to time as per requisitions from
every department.

 We encouraged our staff to register for research by providing library facilities,
modern laboratory facilities, chemicals required for research purposes, adjustment
in lectures, computer and internet facilities, leave of absence and any other help
that they require.
 We carried out our social objectives by giving standing instruction to the
association including N.S.S. is to concentrate on social objectives while planning
their activities.
 To fulfill our social objectives, we spread social messages through our
college magazine. Social message for the year 2009-10 was ‘Teenage Stress’.
 We encouraged students to participate in international advanced
training programmes with foreign universities through our international exchange
programme with St Mary’s College of Business and Economics, California,
U.S.A.
 Industrial visits to various companies and research centres were
organized for students of different departments.
 Our college ‘Placement Cell’ works independently to enable
recruitment of students. This year our students were placed with big corporates
indicating that the industry linkage with the institute has further strengthened.
 Our college associations such as the ‘Nature Club’ and ‘N.S.S.’,
works towards the protection of the environment and inculcates such values
amongst the students.
 In order to aid the financially backward students, the college
provided various schemes such as fee concessions, fee payment on installments,
book bank and ‘Earn while you Learn’, amongst others.

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution:

Our aim is to transcend beyond the narrow confines of academic education and embrace
the contemporary dimensions of educating in totality. We are confident that our
institution will set new benchmarks of performance and surpass them in the years ahead.

diverse backgrounds irrespective of region, religion, caste, economic strata and
academic performance.

To achieve our objectives a number of initiatives have been taken as mentioned

 Providing Quality Education


Harnessing of youth power is critically important for India on its growth path to become
a global power. We, at Pillai’s, contribute to the pool of youth power by providing them
with quality education that would help them unleash their potential.

Considering the importance of quality in education, every department makes efforts to


improve their standards and thereby provide the best to their students.

Department of Computer Science (C.S.) / Information Technology (I.T.)


 Guardian Teachers were appointed for underperforming students.
 Parents of students in the Attendance Defaulter list were called to discuss
measures to improve their attendance.
 Test series was conducted for the students of F.Y./S.Y./T.Y. C.S./I.T.
 Extra lectures were arranged for the students for solving problems.
 Project work of T.Y.C.S. and T.Y.I.T. are started as soon as S.Y.C.S. and S.Y.I.T.
Exams are over so that students complete the project before regular lectures start.
To help students in project, project guides are appointed.
 A One day Seminar on the topic “Knowing Yourself” was conducted.
 Industrial Visit was organized for T.Y. B.Sc. C.S. students from 3rd September to
10th September at Chandigarh.

Department of Economics

 Guest Lecture on the topic “Changing Paradigms- Transformation of Knowledge


for 21st Century, Turning Dreams into Reality”, by Dr. Vijay Raghvan, Dean
PIMSR, 24th July, 2009.

 Students from F.Y.B.Com. were encouraged to give presentations on different


topics from Foundation Course and Environmental Studies.
 Additional Lectures were conducted for Business Economics III for T.Y.B.Com.
Number of lectures was increased to 4 per week from the University prescribed
three.
 Group discussions were conducted in which case studies were discussed
forF.Y.B.Com classes.

Department of Accountancy
 Guidance lecture on Financial Accounting and Direct and Indirect tax for
T.Y.B.Com. students on 3rd of February, 2010. The resource person was Ms.
Minaxi Rachcha from ICL College Vashi.
 Test series was conducted in the subject of Financial Accounting for all the
classes.
 Test series was conducted in the subject of Direct and Indirect tax by Prof. Deepa
Pillai for T.Y.B.Com. students.

 Test series was conducted in the subject of Management Accounting for
S.Y.B.Com. students.
 Advance Learners were encouraged to solve additional problems.
 Problems book on Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Cost
Accounting are prepared by our teachers and supplied to the students at the time
of admission. The students are required to bring it to the class room every day so
that no time is wasted in dictation of problems. Copies of these notes are also
available in the library.
 Extra Lectures were taken in the subject of Financial Accounting for T.Y. B.Com.
and T.Y.A/F.
 Special lectures were conducted in winter vacation for T.Y.A/F in Corporate
Accounting.
 Special lectures were conducted for S.Y.A/F in subject of Taxation
 Project was given to F.Y.B.Com. in Financial Accounting and to S.Y.B.Com A/f
in Management Accounting.

Department of B.Com. Accounting and Finance


 Conducted Class test for all Semesters.
 Paper presentation for F.Y. Acc. and Fin. students in the subject of Business
Communication by Prof. Juliet.
 Extra lectures conducted in the subject of Cost Accounting and Financial
Accounting for T.Y. A/F. (V semester) students.
 Organised guest lecture on “Placement for Trainees” by Reliance for T.Y.A/F
students.

Department of Commerce
 Extra lectures were taken in the Subject of Management and Production planning
for T.Y.B.Com. students from 6th Feb to 10th Feb, 2010.

 Guidance Lecture for T.Y.B.Com. students was conducted in the subject of
Management and Production planning and Export marketing by Mr. Madhu Nair,
Vice Principal, Cosmopolitans Valia College, Andheri
 Conducted test series for T.Y.B.Com. students in the subject of MPP and Export
marketing.
 Conducted Assignment and test series for Commerce I for F.Y.B.Com. And
Commerce II for S.Y.B.Com.
 Project work was given to students of Advertising, although not required as per
university syllabus, in order to enhance their practical knowledge.
 Notes highlighting important points in Management and Production Planning are
prepared by teachers and given to the students at the beginning of the term so that
more time can be devoted to teaching during the lecture. Copies of these notes are
available in the library.

Department of B.M.S.
 Organised Guest Lecture for S.Y.B.M.S. students in the subject of Rural
Marketing on 08th February 2010.
 Career Guidance Session for T.Y.B.M.S. was conducted by Dr. Chandran on 11th
December, 2009.
 Organised an Inter-Collegiate Seminar on “Recent Trends in Marketing:
Research and Application” on 21st December, 2009.
 Mentoring was done for S.Y.B.M.S. Students.
 Parent-Teacher Interaction for T.Y.B.M.S.was conducted.
 Guardian Teachers were appointed for under - performing students.
 Counseling was undertaken for the students whose performance was not
satisfactory.
 Test Series conducted for the subject which are difficult for students

 One day Industrial Visit to Mahabaleshwar was organized for T.Y.B.M.S. from
24th February to 26th February 2010.
Department of English
 Presentations were conducted for all F.Y. classes to improve confidence and
communication skills.
 Certain topics were discussed in detail like Business correspondence and Barriers
to communication.
 Students were motivated for public speaking.
 In F.Y.B.M.S. and F.Y.A./F. topics were given for group discussion and debate
and guidelines were given to improve presentation skills.
 Remedial English teaching to some students who having come from a vernacular
background, found it difficult to understand concepts in English.
 Class test and assignments were conducted for F.Y. F.M. and F. Y.I.T.

Department of Biotechnology
 Written test series were conducted once a week to monitor the students
understanding of the subject and to inculcate the habit of parallel study.
 Students of M.Sc. and T.Y.B.Sc. visited various research institutes and industries
to enhance their knowledge on new research and industrial techniques.
 One day workshop on theory and hands- on training on Spectrophotometer was
organized by the department.
 Guardian teachers were appointed for weak students and a meeting with the
parents was organized each term to discuss overall academic performance in
college.
 Students of first and second year attended summer training in various institutions,
hospitals, pathology laboratories and manufacturing units.
 Visit to Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer
(ACTREC) was organized for the students.
 One Day Inter- Collegiate Seminar on the theme “Biotechnology: Text to Test
Tubes” was organized by the department.

Department of Mathematics
 The “Math Symposia” was conducted on 26th November, 2009.
 Conducted a seminar on “Testing of Hypothesis” on 9th January,2010
 Prof. Smitha Jayaram has given extra coaching for F.Y.B.Com. for the
mathematics subject.
 Test Series was conducted for the F.Y.B.Com. students in the subject of
Mathematics.
 Advance Learners were encouraged to solve problems involving higher
mathematical abilities.

 Creating Employment Opportunities


The Placement Cell provides career guidance to students. The Cell regularly
conducts workshops on soft skills and company-specific tests to improve the
employability of our students.

The cell hosted a number of campus interviews for the benefit of our students and there
were a number of recruitments by various companies:

 Providing Community Service


We have a ‘Social Awareness Cell’ to which all departments and students can contribute
in their own ways to meet the social objectives of the college. The following activities are
undertaken each year towards meeting this end: cleanliness campaign, supporting
education of the underprivileged through grants and free-ships, educational campus
related to computers for the peons and their children, computer education to children of
supporting staff so that they become employable and self reliant, street plays to create
awareness, blood donation/detection programme, amongst others.

Through our annual college magazine we have made an attempt to highlight and create
more awareness on burning social issues of particular importance to the youth. The
concept for the current issue of ‘Spectrum’ is ‘Cruelty on Animals’ Our college
received the Prestigious Prof. M.V. Chandgadkar Trophy for the Best College
Magazine for 2008-2009. The theme of Spectrum 2009-2010 is teenage stress.

 N.S.S.
The main aim of N.S.S. is to inculcate the spirit of social work and with this objective in
mind a number of initiatives were undertaken during the course of academic year 2009-
10.
Each year, student and teacher members righteously accomplish the social cause taken up
for the year by sensibly contributing their time and sincerely putting in their efforts.
Besides, they also work on other common social concerns as per the need of the hour.

Through their activities they help create social awareness.

 Overall Personality Development


The following committees constituted by the college, through their activities help provide
a platform to the students for their overall personality development.

STUDENTS COUNCIL

The year 2009-10 has left a mark in the history of PCACS with its maiden attempt to host
its first ever inter-collegiate cultural festival, “XPRESSIONS 2010” sponsored by NGO RON
– the Rhythm of the Nation and others on 21st January 2010.
About 18 colleges participated in this one day event with Acharya College winning
the Rotating Trophy.

The following events were organized this year as a part of council activity:
 Inauguration of Students’ Council: 27th November, 2009.
 Fresher’s Day: 10th July, 2009.
 Independence Day Celebration: 15th August, 2009.
 Saree/Tie/Rose Day: 27th November, 2009.
 Rainbow Week: 10th Sep to 16th September, 2009.
 Teacher’s Day Celebration: 5th September, 2009.
 Republic Day Celebration: 26th January, 2010.
 Prize Distribution Ceremony: 22nd January, 2010.
 Inter-collegiate Cultural Festival: 20th and 21st January, 2010 .

 We encourage our students by providing them all the facilities that they require to
compete at different levels. We provide them with choreographers for fashion shows
and dances, musicians for singing performances etc. We also provide them with
conveyance and teachers accompany students for the different inter-collegiate events.
CULTURAL COMMITTEE

The college has always believed that meaningful participation is equally important as
winning. Students were given opportunity to manifest their talents in external forums
like various inter-collegiate competitions organized by many educational institutes in
the city of Mumbai.

GYMKHANA
Sports activities play an equally crucial role in a student’s development along with
academic inputs and hence our college gives great importance to participation in the
same.

Our college received the 7th rank in Mumbai University Sports. The college has made
substantial investments in providing the state-of-the-art facilities for various sports.

Students had participated in maximum number of inter- collegiate tournament in

MAGAZINE AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS REPORT


“Spectrum”, our college annual magazine, is truly reflective of the budding talent at
Pillai’s and through it we have made an attempt to highlight and create more
awareness on social issues.
Our College received The Prestigious Prof. Chandgadkar Trophy for best college
magazine for the year 2008-09. The magazine was highly appreciated for carrying a
social message. The theme of the magazine was ‘CRUELTY ON ANIMALS AND
HOW TO CARE FOR THEM’.

The theme of Spectrum 2009-2010 is teenage stress.


The news bulletin is a biannual publication which reflects the activities of various
departments and associations carried out during the year.

ASSOCIATIONS
ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION
The objective of Economics Association is creating student’s interest and enthusiasm
towards economics by organizing various events in the said subject.
An Inter-collegiate seminar was organized by the Economics’ Association on
‘International Business Cycles-Challenges and Strategies’ on 16th December 2009. The
seminar had a gratifying response of 100 participants who were addressed by Prof.Koel
Roy Choudhary H.O.D. Economics, SIES College, Nerul and Dr. Vijayaraghavan Dean,
Pillai’s Institute of Management Studies and Research, New Panvel. The following
activities were arranged in the said academic year:

Biotechnology Association
In association with exhibition committee Biotechnology Association organized
a one day exhibition “Vistas in Biotechnology” on 7th July 2009. The motto of the
exhibition was to introduce the different subjects in the field of Biotechnology to
F.Y.B.Sc. Biotechnology students.
More than 15 exhibits were presented in the event. The function was inaugurated by Dr.
Vijaya Raghavan, Dean, Pillai’s Institute of Management and Research, Panvel.

The exhibition was judged by three judges (1. Dr. B.B.Srivastava, Dr. K.M. Srinandhini
Devi and Dr. Rashmi Padhye) and prizes were given for the best exhibits.
On September 13th 2009 Biotechnology Department and Biotechnology Association
organized the one day Seminar on “ Biotechnology: Text Books to Test tubes”. More
than 80 participants from the different colleges and research institutes participated in the
seminar. Eminent scientist Dr. K. N. Sainis Director, Biomedical Division, BARC.
Mumbai inaugurated the seminar.
Biotechnology Association is also involved in the production of compost from Canteen
wastes (ongoing project) from college in the college campus as a waste management
program.

COMPUTER ASSOCIATION
The objective of computer association is to make students aware about the current
trends in technology and to encourage them to make use of the same.

Following events were organized for students of B.Sc. (I.T. and C.S.) in the current
academic year:

LITERARY ASSOCIATION

The Literary Association was inaugurated with an Essay Writing Competition held on 4 th
July 2009. The competition was held under the supervision of Ms. Juliet Esther. The
students were given an hour to write an essay within the word limit of 200 words. The
essay was evaluated by Prof. Rinkoo Shantnu and Prof. K.M. Srinandhini Devi. The 1 st
Prize was won by Siddesh M. Jayakumar (S.Y.C.S) and the 2 nd by Akhilesh Joshi
(T.Y.C.S.)

The Literary Association also organized an Extempore (On the Spot) Competition on
27th of July 2009. Many students from the F.Y, S.Y. and T.Y. participated with outmost
enthusiasm and made the event a grand success. The topics for the competition were
based on the current issues like Reality Shows, Aids Free India; Confidence etc. the
judges for this competition were prof. Sandhya, Prof. Mariam Fanuswala and Prof.
Sabitha Praveen. In the end results were declared.

MARATHI VANGAYAMAYA MANDAL


1. Elocution Competition was conducted by Marathi Vangayamaya Mandal. The
topic was “A Woman’s Journey as Daughter, Friend, Wife and Mother”.
2. Essay - writing Competition was conducted by Marathi Vangayamaya Mandal.
The topic was “Will Maharashtra Be Super Powered by 2020”.

WOMENS’ CELL

Women’s Cell endeavors to make students aware about gender equality.

The following activities were conducted in the A.Y. 2009-10


1. Ms. Mmahek Chhabria attended two day zonal level workshop on “Gender
Sensitization”, on 25th and 26th November, 2009, organised by ICEL’s Motilal
Jhunjhunwala College, Vashi.
2. Ms. Gopika Ponnapan of S.Y.B.Com. won merit certificate at State- Level Inter
Collegiate Essay Competition organized by Anti Dowry Movement, Bombay on
the topic “Changing Trends in Consent of Marriage”.
3. Lecture on “How to meet emotional challenges of life”, was conducted on 11th
February 2010, by Ms. Deepti Pillai, Professional Counselor of our NGO,
Euridite Education Mission.

Counseling Cell
The Counseling Centre has a trained counselor to address student’s queries and problems.
Students who are identified with some behavioral problems, mental tensions, career
decision-making problems etc. are referred to the counselor. This centre is open for all
the students during the working hours. The centre organizes different activities for the

benefit of the students like lectures, demonstrations and practice sessions on yoga and
personality development.

 Respect the environment

Our college immensely cares for the environment.

Nature Club
Nature club works on the objective of inculcating interest and awareness in the minds of
young students regarding the value of environment and ways to care for it.
Nature Club members organized the following activities in the academic year
2009 -2010:

1. Poster competition was conducted and the theme was Pollution and Environment
Degradation. We have got good response from the students.
2. Organized Poster Competition on “INTERNATIONAL HOMELESS DAY”
3. Nature Club had rescued a snake from school premises. Members have rescued an
owl on 28-07-09.
4. Members planted 40 trees at SEAL association at Nere.
5. Donated 25 Sparrow Shelters to the Plant and Animal Welfare Association.

 We started B.Com. in Financial Markets in the academic year 2009 – 2010.

3. Innovations in curriculum design and transaction:

 Board of Studies, University of Mumbai, regularly revises the syllabus to suit the
requirements of changing times and ensure the overall development of students.
 Working within the curriculum designed by the University, we give weight-age
for academic improvement and at the same time give sufficient importance to

overall development of students by encouraging them to work with various
forums of the college such as Students’ Council, N.S.S., Gymkhana Committee,
Magazine Committee etc.
 Heads of Departments of our college, informally meet the Members of Board of
Studies and H.O.D. of other colleges to discuss the changes in curriculum.
 Our faculty participates in workshops and seminars relating to syllabus revision
conducted by the university.
 They participate in discussions related to curriculum designing and subsequent
introduction of the subjects.
 We also conduct workshops relating to syllabus revision and reforms in
education, on behalf of the university.
 Prof. Rinkoo Shantnu organized a Workshop on ‘Revision of T.Y.B.Com .
Business Economics III paper in association with B.O.S. in Business
Economics ,University of Mumbai at our college campus on 24th

4. Inter- disciplinary programmes started:

 We are affiliated to the University of Mumbai which does not allow us to


offer inter- disciplinary programmes, but we do offer students add on courses in
computers.

 We encourage students to participate in the international exchange


programme with St. Mary’s College of Business and Economics, California,
U.S.A.
 Our teachers are encouraged to participate in workshops, seminars and
research forum which give them an opportunity to interact with colleagues from
other disciplines, thus adding to their teaching skills and communications.

5. Examination reforms implemented:


 The examination schedule is published at the beginning of each term. The
schedule contains details regarding last date for portion completion, dates for
submission of question papers, mark lists, moderation, and declaration of results
and recounting of answer papers.
 Additional Preliminary Examination and Periodic Tests are held for Final
Year students.
 We have introduced a Centralized System of setting of question papers.
 A separate photocopying machine has been installed in the examination
room for maintaining secrecy and timely completion of work. All manuscript
question papers are stored in locked cupboards and sealed before Chairman of
Examination Committee leaves the premises.

 All question papers are photocopied in the presence of the H.O.D.
 We have Centralized Assessment for B.Com. B.M.S., B.Com. A/F, B.Sc.
C.S., B.Sc.Biotechnology and B.Sc.I.T. From 8:00 a.m. To 1:00 p.m. Each
lecturer has to assess a minimum of 40 to 50 papers per day. This helps to declare
the results on time as per the schedule. Refreshments are provided to teachers
during evaluation time.
 Before assessment, synoptic answers are prepared by the examiners.
 We arrange for moderation of answer papers to reduce human error in
evaluation. A certain percentage of total answer papers are moderated by an
external faculty from a neighboring college who is a member of the panel of
examiners of Mumbai University.
 We announce the scheduled dates for revaluation of answer papers and the
subject teacher shows the paper to the student.
 Unfair Means Committee formed in accordance with Mumbai University
statute handles all cases reported. The committee completes the enquiry within
15 days of the completion of the examination and the report is submitted to the
Examination committee.

 Fees from students are the main source of earnings for the college.
 In addition we have M.C.S.T. computer lab which is a part of our college. It
generates revenue by offering certificate and diploma courses in computer studies
at concessional rates.

 We have a Social Awareness Cell to carry out our social objectives.

The following activities were organized by the cell in the right earnest:

1. ‘Honda’, a Brand name in Motorcycles and vehicles, had organized an


‘Awareness Campaign- Rash Driving Ill-effects and Safety Riding Measures’ on
3rd October 2010. This campaign helped the students to be aware regarding the
safety gears and measures to be taken while riding the motorcycles, since
accidents instances reported in youths are more in number.

2. Traffic Police of Panvel organized a Scooter Rally to create awareness and


benefits of using helmets by lady drivers on 6 th January, 2010 as a part of Traffic
Safety Week. Few of our students along with staff members Prof. Mamta Nair

and Prof. Padmaja attended the scooter rally. The rally started from K.V. Kanya
High School, Panvel at 4.30 pm.

3. Our College had conducted an Elocution competition signifying the important


needs of a family encouraging the female activities to become a moral head of the
society. The Theme of the competition was “A women’s Journey Daughter,
Friend, wife or mother.

4. Poster competition was also organized for creating awareness among the students
in which the social and biological impact of usage of various chemicals were
highlighted. The theme of the Poster competition was ‘Pollution and
Environmental Degradation’

5. Plantation Activities were done in association with an NGO Seal. 40 trees were
planted at Nere, Panvel.

6. College also organized a talk on ‘Beauty without Cruelty’ on 9 th July 2009 by the
NGO Plant and Animal Welfare Society.

7. Suicide attempts in teenagers are on alarming state. So to avoid such signaling to


occur in brains among the teenagers, college had organized a Police interaction
for the students so as encourage students overcome their fear, they have in all
concerns.

8. College had also encouraged students from various streams to participate n the
AIDS awareness Rally organized by Jyothis Terminal Care Centre situated at
Kalomboli.

9. Our Students also Performed Street plays at areas such as Kalomboli Market,
Panvel Bus depot and Panvel Railway station to create awareness in concern with
AIDS. This was being acknowledged by the Jyothis Terminal Care Centre,
Kalomboli.

 Our college magazine attempts to highlight and create more awareness on social
issues. Each year we work on an issue which is most relevant to the society during
that phase. The theme of Spectrum 2009-2010 is teenage stress.

 We have classified our knowledge resources according to the internationally


recognized 21st Edition of Dewey Decimal Classification System.

 During this academic year, a ‘Student Suggestion Form’, was introduced. These
forms are available in the library counter wherein they can put in their suggestions
regarding procurement of books. These suggestions are considered by the Heads
of respective departments, based on which requisitions may be given.

 Computerized consolidated feedback on every teacher is taken for each course


from all students without disclosing their identity.

 The lecturer is counseled firstly by the head of the department and then by
the principal.

 The unit cost of education during the academic year 2009-2010 was Rs.

24. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and


examination results, issue of certificates:

 Admission forms are available on web site www.mes.ac.in.


Entire admission process is computerized. Once a student is enrolled his / her
entire information data is stored and used for receipts, identity cards and students
list. This software has been developed by Software Development Department of
our college.
 Examination schedules and results are updated on the college website.

25. Increase in the infrastructural facilities:

 Increase in infrastructure facility is an ongoing process at our campus. We have
six storied building and being a growing institution; augmentation of
infrastructural facilities is a never-ending process.
 Computers are updated by our hardware department.
 Biotechnology Instrumentation lab was upgraded with new instruments.
 Gymkhana facilities were upgraded with better sports kit.
 Library resources were augmented with newer editions and titles.

26. Technology up gradation:

 Additional upgraded computers have been installed for the staff with all other
facilities.
 We have software programmes for monitoring student attendance, academic
performance and their feedback.
 Smart cards are in use for attendance of teaching and non-teaching staff.

 Additional computers and laser printers have been provided for use of students.
 Internet and intranet services are provided.
 VSAT and LCD presentation facilities have been provided to improve teaching
methods.

27. Computer and internet access and training to teachers and students:

 Teachers and students are encouraged to use computers to improve their


presentation skills.
 They are also encouraged to make use of internet facilities in order to update
themselves. Internet facility is available free of cost.
 Teachers make use of these facilities to prepare question papers, mark sheets,
attendance records and to make annual/term-end reports.

project work, reference work by internet surfing etc. Computer and Internet

 Higher band width capacities were hired from the source ISP companies to

 Book Bank facility helped the financially backward students by providing them
text books on various subjects by collecting a meager deposit amount which was
returned back to them while returning the books at the end of the year. The bank
has placed requisition for 20 copies of books of all subjects for B.Com. which can
be made use of in the next academic year 2009 – 2010.

29. Activities and support from Alumni Association:

 We have registered Alumni Association under Society’s Registration Act, 1860


on 26th April, 2010 (Reg. No. Maharashtra 279/2010).
 The association membership is free.
 Committee regularly meets and interacts with the management.
 The association maintains a Suggestion Form for expressing their views and
putting forward their suggestions.
 Members of alumni association were invited for the annual function of the
college.
 Members of Alumni association are allowed to use library resources.

 We make use of the expertise and knowledge of our alumni for the benefit of
our present students.
 We have been able to continue to develop linkages with the corporate world
through the ex-students who have been placed in good companies.
 During college sports festival we organize events for the alumni’s.

30. Activities and support from the Parent -Teacher Association:

 We conducted regular parent- teacher meetings to keep them up updated about


their wards performance.
 During the course of these meetings details related to attendance, discipline, exam
pattern, study tours, certificate courses etc were discussed.
 Information regarding their ward may also be passed on through letters and phone
calls, if need be.
 Parents of any student are allowed to meet the teachers, Coordinators, Vice
Principal and Principal on any day of the week at any time to make any
suggestions or complaints.

 Parents were given the mobile numbers of the concerned class teachers so that
they can have regular and direct feedback about their children with relation to
attendance and performance.
 Opinions of parents are considered with respect to various aspects such as
planning of industrial visits, cultural programmes etc are valued.

31. Health Services:

 We have a Health Club which tries to create health awareness among


students and staff by conducting programmes such as yoga sessions, lectures on
health issues, blood donation etc.
 Health centre is available in the premises.
 First-aid boxes are available.

 Replacement of medicine is done as and when required.


 We have a canteen committee inorder to keep a check and improve the
functioning of the canteen . Student repsentatives are included in the same.
Regular meetings are held for prompt redressal of canteen related problems.
 In association with N.S.S., the Health Committee organized the following events:
 A lecture on, ‘Swine Flu’, on the 14th Aug. 09, at Pillai’s campus.
 Blood donation camp was conducted on28th August 2009, at Pillai’s campus.

Annual Sports Meet

 Participating students get concessions in the attendance and we conduct


extra tests for them.

 Kits have been provided free of cost to all students who have
participated in sports. And many availed of fee concessions upto 100 percent.

 All students participating in any sports events are given free transport
allowance.
 For university level winners 10 extra marks are added to their total
marks at the final examination.

 Additional examinations were conducted for those students who


could not appear for their regular examination due to tournaments which
coincided with the same dates.

 Our college organizes annual residential sports camp to train and


motivate our students to participate in inter-collegiate as well as intra-collegiate
sports tournaments.

 Whenever there are out station industrial visits, we encourage some of our grade
IV employees to join in and their tickets and stay are sponsored.
 College Gymkhana committee arranged Carom, Table Tennis , cricket
Tournaments for the non-teaching staff members.
 For the benefit of our non-teaching staff we procured books for the library that
gives knowledge on literature, communication skills and general awareness.

37. Grievance cell and healthy practices of the organisation

GRIEVANCE CELL
 This Cell has been set up for prompt redressal of students’ grievances.
 The Grievance Cell has taken up several key issues covering student
grievances which were aptly redressed. Grievances pertaining to basic
facilities provided by the college were redressed. We have a personal
counselor for our student grievance cell.
 The college encourages students, teaching and non-teaching staff to
come up to the grievance cell and state their problems. During the current

academic year some of the problems relating to canteen menu , classrooms
etc. was effectively addressed.
 A separate box was provided in which students and teachers could drop
their grievances. This box was opened once a week.
 An email id was provided to the students and teachers so that they can get
in direct contact with the Prof. In-charge. Grievances received are
properly maintained in a separate file for future reference.

HEALTHY PRACTICES

 We have constituted awards for the ‘Best Teacher’ and “Best library User” to
encourage staff to carry on with the good work.
 Management supports teachers who wish to pursue advanced studies in terms
of financial aid and time flexibility. Necessary books are also ordered in the
library on receipt of requisition from the teacher concerned.
 We encourage teachers to participate in workshops, seminars at state /
national level. The registration fees and traveling expenses are reimbursed by the
college and they are given duty leave for the same.
 Teachers are encouraged to attend faculty development programmes such as the
orientation and refresher courses.
 Our college Staff Colloquium organizes lectures and activities for the benefit of
teaching and non-teaching staff.
 Non- teaching staff and grade IV employees can take loan at lower interest rate
from the society.
 Free computer education is given to non- teaching staff.
 Whenever there are out station industrial visits, we encourage some of our grade
IV employees to join in and their tickets and stay are sponsored.
 Term-end lunch and annual picnics and Christmas celebrations for staff are
arranged by the college.
 We have framed the “Best Student Award” to encourage students to actively

 The PCACS LRC has formed library committee to formulate policies and

contingencies.

 News Letter: We publish bi-monthly newsletter as communication medium

 In the years gone by we have successfully forayed into several new vistas like the

culminated into a joint venture with St. Mary’s College of Business and
Economics, California, and U.S.A. for hosting of exchange programmes for
