Hehaoyu Zou: Bluetooth transmission and noise reduction

Demi Shen: integration of needle head with thermistor and internal wires
Bicong Li: Arduino code and circuit building
Project scope, design specifications, and design schedule are unchanged
OVERALL STATUS OF
THE PROJECT

Purchased thermistors, needle heads, Bluetooth

emitting and receiving device
Assembled Arduino circuit with thermistor
Temperature measurement is working properly
Currently working on
Integrating thermistor inside the needle head
Improving the Bluetooth signal-to-noise ratio and
stability of signal
RESULTS OF PROOF-OF-
CONCEPT TESTING

Since there are myocardial temperature sensors currently

in the market, the most important characteristic of our
product is the wireless feature
Biggest obstacle: background noise in operating room
Results of noise shaping
Delta-sigma 2nd order modulator diagram
Power spectrum shows a desirable re-distribution of
noise power to higher frequencies
Temperature signal successfully transmitted to receiver
VERIFICATION PLAN

Feature Specification

Accuracy 0.2

Range 0~40

Wireless transmission distance 6~10m

Needle stability the needle is expected to stand on its own

without falling off during surgery

Automatic alert-triggering customizable desired monitoring range

Alarming consecutive until back to safe range

Needle length 8mm/15mm/30mm

ACCURACY (0.2)

Accuracy: difference between well-known temperature

benchmarks and actual reading on temperature monitor
Steps
Prepare a water bath of 0
Measure with a calibrated digital thermometer with 2-decimal
accuracy
Compare results (if less than 0.2 )
Repeat for 40 and 50

Equipment needed: water bath, digital thermometer

RANGE (0~40 )

Steinhart-Hart Equation:
1
= + + 3

Measure resistance at 0 , 20 , and 50
Introduce artificial error of 0.2
Multiple measurements to reduce noise
Use matrix and solve for A, B, and C
Measure resistance at 40

Equipment needed: water bath, multimeter

Verification is not likely to fail
WIRELESS TRANSMISSION DISTANCE
(6-10M)

1. Input a temperature value into the

transmitting end
2. Place the Bluetooth Arduino model at a
distance of 10m from the receiving
monitor
3. Verify if the displayed signal is the same
as inputted temperature

Equipment needed: monitor

Mitigation plan: amplify emitting end and reduce noise at receiving end
NEEDLE STABILITY
(NEEDLE IS EXPECTED TO STAND ON ITS OWN
WITHOUT FALLING OFF DURING SURGERY )

Needle will be inserted into a piece of animal tissue (a pig heart or cow heart)
Needle will be pushed from side to side
Verification: if the needle is able to withstand the most violent maneuvers

Equipment needed: animal tissue

Verification is not likely to fail due to clients input
AUTOMATIC ALARM TRIGGERING
(CUSTOMIZABLE DESIRED MONITORING RANGE )

MYOCARDIAL HYPOTHERMIA VERIFICATION STEPS

Used during open heart surgery to Temperature will be inputted instead of

protect the heart measured with the thermistor probe
Clamp placed across the ascending aorta Test normal and arrested states
Infusion of cold (5) cardioplegia to Normal: 35~38
arrest the heart
Arrested: below 32 or 30
Heart temperature can be cooled to
Test the reaction time
32, or 30
Needs alarm
ALARMING
(CONSECUTIVE UNTIL B ACK TO SAFE RANGE)

Can be combined with the previous verification plan

After the temperature falls outside of the safe range, we will test if the alarm
sound stays on until
We mute it in the program or
Temperature falls back to safe range

Verification is not likely to fail if code works properly

VALIDATION PLAN

Set up each component of our product

Temperature monitor: beneath the 3-D image
monitor
Alarm: next to the computer
Steps
Turn on all eqiupment
Set a monitoring range
Insert the temperature probe and mimic
operation maneuvers
Perfuse animal tissue with iced water until
alarm goes off
Rest the alarm, set new monitoring range and
repeate
