Pagan Yule Carols

Some of these songs are Paganized versions of old

favorites, some are secular carols that need no filching.

This booklet is assembled for your singing pleasure with

contributions from Coyote Morningstar, Lady Bridget,
Lady Sirona & Laertius.

Many of these were published in the Green Egg Yule

1992(?) Songbook attributed to the Greenwood Singers.

Grateful credit is given to the creative lyricists who

penned the words where such information is known.

CHRISTMAS SOLSTICE
THE WYRD SISTERS
To Drive the Cold Winter Away
(Traditional English) A fire is burning
The long night draws near
All hail to the days that merit more praise All who need comfort
Than all of the rest of the year Are welcome by here
And welcome the nights that double delights
As well for the poor as the peer
Well dance neath the stars
Sweet blessing attend each merry mans friend
Each does but the best that he may And toast the past year
Forgetting all wrongs with poems and songs For the spirit of solstice
To drive the cold winter away. Is still living here

Tis ill for the mind to anger incline -Well count all our blessings
To think of small injuries now While the Mother lays down
If wrath be Jusee, dont lend her thy cheek With snow as her blanket
Dont let her inhabit thy brow Covering the ground
Cross out of thy book malevolent looks
Both beauty and youths decay Thanks to the Mother
And spend the long night in honest delight
For the life that she brings
To drive the cold winter away.
Shell waken to warm us
When the Yule tide comes in like a bride Again in the spring
With holly and ivy clad
Twelve days in the year must mirth and good cheer The poor and the hungry
In every household is had The sick and the lost
The popular guise is then to devise These are our children
All manner of holiday play No matter the cost
Both women and men do the best that they can
To drive the cold winter away. Come by the fire
The harvest to share
This time of the year is spent in good cheer
For the spirit of solstice
With neighbors who gather to meet
Just sit by the fire with friendly desire
Is still living here
With others in love to greet
All grudges forgot are put in the pot This song is sung as a round:
All sorrows aside they lay
The old and the young do carol this song Voice #1: A fire is burning
To drive the cold winter away. Voice # 2: (Fire is burning), etc.

Tis the season to be jolly,
Silent night, Solstice Night
Fa la la la la, la la la la! All is calm, all is bright

See the blazing Yule before us,
Sleeping spirits grow strong!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!
Strike the harp and join the chorus,
Fa la la la la, la la la la! Silent night, Solstice night
Follow me in merry measure, Silver moon shining bright
Fa la la la, la la la la la! Snowfall blankets the slumbering Earth
While I tell of Yuletide treasure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la!
Yule fires welcome the Sun's rebirth
Hark, the Light is reborn!
Fast away the old year passes, Hark, the Light is reborn!
Fa la la la la, la la la la!
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses, Silent night, Solstice night
Fa la la la la, la la la la! Quiet rest till the Light
Sing we joyous all together,

Heedless of the wind and weather, Brings the Winter to comfort and heal

music by Lewis H. Redner
Faunus the Roman Goat-God
Had a very rigid pr*ck Our Lady moon shines softly down

You would say it's quite a trick As we, her children, gather here
All the other deities Around the Yule fire's glow (Chorus)
Used to leer suggestively
They always wanted Faunus Chorus:
To Join in the revelry We wait for morning's dawning
First light of holy birth
Then one frosty Saturnalia Our Lady turns the wheel of life
Juno made this call Her Son returns to Earth
"Faunus since you're hung so well,
Won't you ring my solstice bell?" With joy we'll greet his dawning
A new year has begun
Then all the others pouted With increased light comes hope so
And they muttered jealous-ly bright
"Faunus, the Roman goat-god Reborn in ev'ryone (Chorus)
Better save a turn for me!"
