Philosophy of Teaching

Jennifer Carlsson
In order for students to learn they must be active participants in the learning

process. Students all come from diverse backgrounds culturally and educationally.

This experience can add a rich diversity to the classroom in which students can

learn from different view-points as well develop respect for others. A good learner

observes in the classroom but through interactive teaching strategies is able to use

the knowledge gained from the observation to become a problem solver. Students

are like seeds and with proper instruction and encouragement they can grow to

become critical thinkers. Students can become more willing to step outside of the

box on issues and come up with creative ideas if given the proper support. Learning

takes place when material is made relatable to their lives thus, promoting a desire

to learn.

As an instructor I strive to provide experiences that can create long-term

memories to aid in retention. I am passionate about my subject matter and

teaching which translates into an environment students can feel more engaged in. I

make class interesting by being interactive and making sure students understand

the benefits of the information and how it relates to their world. Providing

constructive, consistent, and timely feedback is important in order for learning to

occur. Using emotions such as excitement and happiness, to help students

understand material and get them excited about their own learning will help

students learn to take control of their learning. A good teacher is a facilitator and a

coach.

As an instructor I use interactive activities that shifts the control from teacher

to student such as group discussions and interteaching. I use peer evaluations to

help students learn how to not only assess other students work but what to look for

when they are doing their own assignments. I also like to use journaling as a means

of self-reflection. I believe in creating good rapport with my students which helps

them participate more actively and seek help when needed. Research by Buskist

and Saville (2001), good rapport also helps students pay attention more in class and

motivates them to do better in class. I believe in using diverse strategies including

various classroom activities, different types of assignments, and group work to help

students interact with the material in different ways to try and reach students of all

learning styles.

I am accessible to my students and have an open door policy for them. My

classroom environment is one that is supportive, encouraging, and welcoming of

different viewpoints so that students feel free to express their ideas and to not be

afraid to be critical thinkers. It is my goal to educate by inspiring curiosity and

empowering students to be critical thinkers that will share in their own education.
