N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Kelly Morrison Date of Activity: 1/28/17 and 2/7/17 Faculty name: Bev
Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with

(be specific about the purpose and your role):

The first professional activity I attended was a Basic Life Support CPR class at Eclipse

CPR. I was a student in the class and my role was to learn and become competent in providing

CPR, specifically for healthcare providers. At the end of the class, I took an exam in order to

receive the certification.

The second professional activity I attended was the Interprofessional Education and

Practice (IPEP), focusing specifically on the digestive system and gastrointestinal tract. At this

activity, I worked with students from other disciplines including the medical students and

pharmacy students. As a group, we conducted assessments on elders and then identified potential

needs. My role was to provide a nursing perspective during the assessment.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The Basic Life Support CPR class was held at Eclipse CPR on Speedway and was 3.5

hours in length (5-8:30pm). The class was on 2/7/17.

The IPEP activity was held at St. Lukes Home, an assisted living home for low-income

elders. The activity was 4.5 hours in length (7:30am-12:00pm) on 1/28/17.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
The Basic Life Support class was valuable for my future as a new graduate nurse. Not

only is it required by all hospitals when applying for jobs, but it is useful for daily life as well. I

had taken a CPR class in the past but retaking the class was helpful to refresh myself on concepts

of CPR. In addition, some changes had been added to the BLS Handbook that were discussed

during the class. Being competent in CPR is necessary for all nurses.
I also found the IPEP activity valuable. I think working with other students in health

sciences is beneficial because we will be working as a team during our careers. The IPEP activity

helped demonstrate what the other disciplines are learning and what they can contribute to the
healthcare team. I found this activity valuable to my future career and it enabled me to be more

knowledgeable about how to work more effectively with other students.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why

or why not? (Describe)

I would recommend both of these professional experiences in the future. The CPR class

was beneficial because it is required when applying for jobs. In addition, refreshing my

knowledge on providing lifesaving care during my preceptorship and shortly before beginning a

career was helpful. I would also recommend the IPEP activity because working with other

students in health sciences taught me beneficial skills that will be useful in the future. Working

with the healthcare team is a major task of nursing, and I think beginning while in school will

benefit all students. Both of these activities were valuable to my future and I would suggest this

combination for future students.
