Proposal: Hazing on College Campus

For our topic we have chosen to research about hazing across college campuses. As we

know, hazing can be a big problem in the Greek community, on sports team and many other

organizations on campus. Not many students know that hazing occurs within their campus, even

in their own organization. Whether you think it happens or not, we have all heard horror stories

of what has happened in the past regardless if they were true or not. Our mission is educate the

class about what is happening behind closed doors. We will do this by sharing stories of students

at universities, where they have come forward and also be giving details on where hazing all

started. Another way we will try and educated the students is by having a student come forward

and answer questions that we have laid out and also share a hazing account. Our group will be

using Linguistic and visual modes. We will do this either by video or if the student is not

comfortable, by email. After sharing different stories of hazing incidents our group will provide

the class with different ways people try to help stop hazing, like anti-hazing laws, websites, and

hazing hotlines.

To go along with our project, our group will be making a detailed slideshow that goes

along with what we are talking about. We believe that a visual representation with pictures will

really help the audience pay attention and also ensure that they understand the message we are

relaying to them. Visual pictures of what hazing is and how it can affects someone are usually

like a car crash. The damage is so bad that it is hard to look away. Just like a car crash, a person
will think what they should not do to be in those sorts of situations. This is why we believe that a

picture of a pledge who has lost their life, or a brother who has an iron brand burned into his

chest would really put thought into the audience's mind. Although many students arent apart of

Greek life and dont experience hazing in their day to day lives doesnt mean that they cant and

shouldnt advocate for no hazing. Just like any issue out there, it may not affect you directly, but

it could be affecting the kid right next to you and you would never even know it.

For the project roles we each split it up so we can work on the project equally. We each

decided that we will all three look up/ devise our own definition of hazing, look up one

occurrence of hazing on a college campus in the past and in todays culture, and one resource to

help stop hazing. In additions to that, each member of the group will be researching a different

organization on a college campus. McKenzie will be researching the Greek community, Jesse

will research sports team, and Cara will be researching a certain college that uses hazing as a

tactic to make better students.

The timeline for how we are going to do our project will follow as the instructions say.

We will revise our proposal after it has been peer reviewed on February 20th , and after the

proposal has been revised our group will start to research information and different stories. We

will be putting all the information together and construct a visual presentation weeks before the

project is due on April 24th. When it comes time for peer reviews of the entire project on April

17th, we will be done with all the visual and informational aspects of the projects. This will

allow us time to get familiar with the material and practice what we are going to say when we

present. All we will have to do after the peer review of the project is make sure to change

anything our peers tell us to and also get prepared for presenting at week 16.
For the conclusion we plan on using all the evidence we have gathered to make everyone aware

of what is going on around campus. Our mission and take away for everyone is to remind

students remember when youre rushing more often, hazing can build animosity between people

and does nothing to foster trust, unity or respect. It simply makes better hazers.
