Week 3 Lesson Writing Process

Common Core Standard:

CC.1.4.2.R Demonstrate a grade appropriate command of the


conventions of Standard English grammar, usage, capitalization,
punctuation, and spelling.

Objective: Students will brainstorm, write a rough draft, edit, and finalize as
well as package a letter to a Friendly Monster.

Materials:

Letter Templates
Brainstorming Map
Envelopes
Pictures of the Friendly Monsters
Editing Checklist
Click, Clack Moo: Cows that Type.
Stamps
Classroom Mailbox

Motivation:

Read The day the Crayons Quit.

Discuss the different letters and what the message of each was

What is similar, what is different?

Instruction:

This instruction is centered more on the students working through the


process as modeled in Week 2.

Day 1:

Students will be introduced to the topic of writing a letter


Choose a Friendly Monster to write to.
Write to your chosen friendly monster. He or She is able to grant wishes
and you have only one. What is it? Why do you want it?
Students will begin brainstorming ideas and collecting their thoughts on
paper.
Possibly begin rough draft

Day 2:

Students will finish their graphic organizer


Begin writing their rough draft on a letter template (without labels).
Possible edit for those who complete at a faster pace.

Day 3: Peer edit with a partner and the teacher using a simple checklist.

Day 4: Finishing editing and write the final draft

Day 5: Finish up writing the final draft and Begin preparing for mailing.

Day 6:

Mail our letters to the Friendly Monsters and place them in the
Classroom Mailbox.
Write a small sentence about what you learned from doing this project
and play a game reviewing all the different concepts learned from Letter
Writing.

Guided Practice:

I will walk around and assist students as needed during the writing
process.
I will also take part in helping students to edit their letters for
punctuation and capitalization errors.

Individual Practice:

Students will Brainstorm their thoughts on a graphic organizer


Students will write a rough draft of their letter
Students will edit with classmate as well as myself or Ms. Iglio
Students will write a final copy on letter paper.
Students will fold, seal and mail their letter and place it in our Classroom
Mailbox

Assessment:
Student will submit their letter for the friendly monsters (Me) to read and
I will grade their letter writing on a standardized rubric.
Students will take part in an interactive jeopardy game where they are in
groups and answer questions about the entire three-week letter writing
unit.

Modifications:

One student will be wearing an FM system


I will be wearing a lapel microphone
Repeating directions for student who have troubling processing
information
Chunking tasks into smaller parts.
Check for understanding of directions.

Frequent feedback and praise
Extra time to complete classwork for a few group of students.
