Writing Prompt #7

Critical thinking is hard. Thinking about critical thinking is even harder, which has

proved to be true time and time again throughout the semester long multi-modal project. For our

project, my group and I have chosen the topic of hazing on college campuses. Of course, the first

thought that pops into your head when hazing in college is mentioned is normally related to

sororities and fraternities. Through rhetorical knowledge, we decided that maybe just sororities

and fraternities was a little too one sided, and it wouldnt keep the classs attention because not

everyone is in a sorority or fraternity. In fact, Im the only one in my group who isnt a part of a

sorority. I believe this aspect helps give two sides of the story, since I can give my opinion

without chance of it being biased towards defending sororities or fraternities.

I have found that through all of our daily assignments, writing prompts, discussions, and

projects, the one element that pushes me to do more and causes me to investigate more, is the

unknown. Especially linked to the genealogy project, there is more unknown than known. While

I can easily find the members of my family, it doesnt tell me who they are, who they were. I

wanted to know their stories, their struggles, what their day to day life was like. Unfortunately, it

isnt so easy trying to track down personal stories from decades ago. No matter how much

research you put into something, theres always a dead end somewhere.

The sources that have proven to be the most challenging are people. For this topic, it

requires obtaining personal interviews from member of sororities and fraternities to have a really

personal curve to the project. The only thing that is challenging about this though is that these

people do not want to be tied to this project. If someone finds out that they talked about their

sorority or fraternity, there could be some trouble for them, especially if they are stories that

dont represent their sorority or fraternity in good light.
