Advanced String Competency (Required for String Majors)

You will demonstrate advanced level skills on a string instrument by performing a solo. This
summative and formal evaluation is to prove your ability to demonstrate correct technique and to
produce a characteristic sound for your students.

Repertoire must be chosen from the list below unless you have proposed and received approval
from the instructor for a substitute. String Majors must choose an opposite instrument on
which to perform (shoulder [violin/viola] vs. floor instruments [cello/bass]).

Grading criteria are included on the rating sheet that is found on the Core Website. You should
carefully consider the criteria as you prepare for the exam, as your grade will be based less on
how a piece sounds, and more on how you look and move as you play. Exams will be taken
individually with the Teaching Assistant or during playing exams for video recording during
class time for subsequent grading.

Non-String Majors: You may elect to perform one solo from this list as a Student-selected
Assignment.
