Writing Prompt #9

When prompted about asking someone about my semester long project, I immediately

knew I was going to have some kind of trouble. Almost everyone I associate with, especially in

my dorm, are not associated with sororities or fraternities. I admit, it might have been easier if

they were involved because it would have given me more of an opportunity to learn more from

actual members of the school organizations and their views of hazing, I was very interested in

learning what outsiders thought and knew.

Sitting in the common area on my hall, I sat down with two of my friends, Taylor and

Autumn, and simply prompted them with the topic: Hazing Across College Campuses.

Immediately they gravitated towards sororities and fraternities, which is not that surprising. It is

what almost everybody thinks of first. I then prompted them with fact that there is another school

organization that has higher rates of hazing and asked them if they could guess what it was.

Taylor first guess the arts, she was wrong. After a good minute or two they both came to the

same conclusion at the same time, athletics. When they realized it was athletics, they were not

surprised, they were honestly shocked that they didnt think of that one first, for they both

thought that it was more common in athletics.

This same trend kept repeating: they would think Greek life; it would be athletics. I knew

going into this conversation, they wouldnt have any knowledge to offer me. Unfortunately, they

were the only two people available, so I couldnt question anyone else. This conversation didnt

help me, really. Although it did reinforce the idea that when you say hazing, the mind jumps to

sororities and fraternities.
