INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
UNIVERSITI TENAGA NASIONAL
(Revised March 2017)

1.0 OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Industrial Training are:

(a) To expose students to the various aspects of industrial practices and ethics.
(b) To appreciate the significance of theoretical knowledge gained in the University into
engineering practice.

3.0 DURATION
The minimum duration of the training is twelve (12) weeks in a single organization.

4.0 ELIGIBILITY

The student must have completed a minimum of seventy (70) credit hours just before the
commencement of the training. More explicitly, the student can only undergo the training
after completion of Year 2 but before commencing the Final Year Project (FYP) 2.
The student must have a CGPA of 2.0 and above at the time of registration.

The student must have taken pre-requisite subject assigned by each program before the
commencement of the training as follows;
Bachelor of Civil Engineering program Hydraulics Engineering (CEWB222),
Geology Eng. (CESB223), Structural Analysis I (CEGB112).
Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering program - Theory of Machines (MEMB263).
Bachelor of Electrical Power Engineering program - Control System (EEEB323).
Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering program - Control System
(EEEB323).
Bachelor of Computer and Communication Engineering program - Control System
(EEEB323).

5.0 PLACEMENT

Students must apply for the Industrial Training placement on his/her own. The place chosen
must give some exposure on the field of his/her major. Checking on the companys profiles
and activities are highly recommended. The companys profiles and activities can be
obtained from the companys web page or you may consult the Industrial Training coordinator.
The student can also download the company directory from Industrial Training Moodles site at
www.lms.moodle.uniten.edu.my

The following documents should be included with the application letter;


1. Curriculum Vitae/Resume
2. Verification Letter which can be obtained from the online Industrial Training System (ITS)
upon student registration of Industrial Training as a subject and also upon indicating the
Industrial Training in the study plan.
3. Cover email or letter.

Please refer to the Appendix for application letter and curriculum vitae (CV) samples.
Scholarship holders are required to consult their sponsor for approved Industrial Training
placement.

6.0 CHANGE OF COMPANY

The student is not allowed to change the company once the Industrial Training Approval
form is submitted as mentioned in 8 (d) below.
Student will not be graded if the student takes up the Industrial Training in a company
which is not recognized by the Industrial Training committee.
A FAIL grade will be awarded to a student who changes company without fulfilling the
requirements stated above and/or when we receive any complaint from a company on the
students failure to report for duty.

7.0 CREDIT TRANSFER FOR INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

Transfer Credit for Industrial Training (COEB314) is NOT allowed. Transfer credit is allowed for
horizontal transfer (degree to degree transfer) only, subject to credit transfer policy.

8.0 PROCEDURAL REQUIREMENTS

(a) The student is required to include the subject COEB314 (Industrial Training) for the following
semester during advising week period.

(b) The student must obtain a Company Reply Form or Offer Letter from the company as a
proof that the student has secured an Industrial Training Placement.

(c) The student is required to fill in the Industrial Training Approval form.

(d) Then, the student is required to submit the Industrial Training Approval form and the
Company Reply Form or Offer Letter to Industrial Training coordinator for approval.

(e) The student is required to submit the Industrial Training Approval Form and Company
Reply Form or Offer Letter upon approval to each departments administrative staff.

(f) During the first week of Industrial Training, student must fill up information required in Final
Placement ITS and Report Duty form.

(g) The student must ensure the subject COEB314 (Industrial Training) is in the students
timetable. Please refer to Registrar Office and Finance Department for subject registration
procedures.

(h) During the training, the students conduct must be in accordance with the organization
working schemes, rules and regulations. The organization will appoint a host supervisor.

(i) The student is required to maintain a logbook. All the training activities should be recorded
on daily basis. The logbook must be certified by the host supervisor.

(j) Students undergoing Industrial Training overseas must:


Submit Host Supervisor Evaluation Form (hard copy) duly signed by the Host
Supervisor.
Ensure that communications (via phone, email etc.) are made between the
visiting supervisor and the host supervisor.
Undergo Oral Presentation during first week of the following semester.

(k) The student also needs to obtain the Industrial Training Completion Certificate or Letter
from the Industrial Training Company and submit it to the assigned visiting supervisor.

(l) At the end of the training, the student is required to fill in the Industrial Training Survey
available at Industrial Training Moodle site at www.lms.moodle.uniten.edu.my

(m) The student must write a complete industrial training report and submit the hard copy to the
visiting lecturer. The student must also submit the certified logbook to the assigned visiting
supervisor during first week of the following semester. Please refer to Industrial Training
Programme Training Report Guidelines for the format of the report.

9.0 EVALUATION

Evaluation of the training will be based on:


a) Host Supervisor Assessment Report (25%)
b) Students Oral Presentation (20%)
c) Log Book (15%)
d) Industrial Training Report (40%)

10.0 METHODS OF EVALUATION

10.1 Host Supervisors assessment report


The host supervisor is responsible to assess the students performance using Host
Supervisor Assessment Report in the Appendix. Visit will be arranged between week 6
and week 12 on a convenient date decided by the host and visiting supervisors.

10.2 Assessment of the Students Presentation.


The students presentation will be assessed by the visiting supervisor and the host
supervisor during the visit by the visiting supervisor. The student will be given a period of
ten (10) to fifteen (15) minutes for the presentation and five (5) minutes for questions and
answers. Assessment of the students presentation will be based on the contents, style of
the presentation and also the ability to answer questions. Please refer to the Oral
Presentation Form in the Appendix.

10.3 Assessment of Logbook


The assigned visiting supervisor is responsible to assess the students industrial training
logbook. Please refer to the Logbook Form in the Appendix.

10.4 Assessment of the industrial training report prepared by the student.


The assigned visiting supervisor is responsible to assess the students performance based
on the Industrial Training Report submitted. Please refer to the Industrial Training
Report Form in the Appendix.

11.0 Result

PASS or FAIL grade will be based on marks acquired (accumulated) from all four-evaluation
methods above and the minimum-passing percentage is 50%.FAIL grade will also be given to
those who:

Fail to submit the Industrial Training Report


Fail to submit the Logbook.
Fail to attend and present their work during Oral Presentation.
Fail to produce the Industrial Training Completion Certificate or Letter from the host
supervisor.
