VideoRationale and Reflection

1. Standards addressed by this video:
In this video I addressed standard 7 (The teacher uses various instructional
strategies to ensure that all learners develop a deep understanding of content areas
and their connections, and build skills to apply and extend knowledge in meaningful
ways).
2. What key ideas of the above mentioned standards is your video focusing on:
The key ideas I focused on in this video are analyzing student errors and
misconceptions in order to redirect, focus, and deepen learning; supporting content
and skill development by using media and technology resources; and using a variety
of questioning strategies to promote engagement and learning.
3. How are you interpreting the above-mentioned standard in the video?
In this video clip, students worked together in small groups and as a class to
review for a test. Responding to question prompts given both verbally and written
on the PowerPoint slides, students read and discussed questions in their table
groups. The PowerPoint slides also contained pictures to further prompt discussion
and remind them of previously covered material. During group discussions I walked
around and listened to student responses, asking follow up questions, requesting
students to repeat what they heard their peers say, and giving feedback to students.
Through these strategies, I feel that I helped students engage in meaningful and
productive conversations to prepare them for their test.
4. What are your strong points in this video?
I think my greatest strength in this video was walking around the groups and
helping them extend their responses. Asking follow-up questions was particularly
helpful to a couple of groups who struggled to elaborate beyond simple responses.
In most instances, students needed very little prompting and were then able to
continue their discussions.
5. What are your weak points?
Something Id like to work on in the future is establishing expectations for group
discussions more clearly. I think that part of the reason some students struggle to
continue their discussions beyond the very basic responses is because they do not
know what I want them to do. Another thing I need to work on is involving students
who are shy or quiet, and who struggle to even speak in small groups. I noticed
when I was watching the video that there were a few students who did not speak at
all during the small-group discussions, so they were not getting as much out of the
activity as students who actively shared with each other during each round of
questions.
6. What strategies will be helpful in improving your weak points?
One strategy I will implement in the future is incorporating different grouping
strategies to allow quieter students more opportunities to respond. Working in
pairs may relieve some of the pressure students feel, and provides more time for
responding since they only have to wait for one other person to speak before they
start talking.
