Student teachers are required to plan learning-experiences linked to specific learning outcomes, using a variety of different
instructional approaches. While many experienced teachers may not complete full lesson plans for all classes taught, this IS A
REQUIREMENT for student teachers. Two possible formats are provided here, but student teachers are encouraged to discuss
lesson planning formats with their Associate Teachers /Associate Teachers and adjust formats to suit the class level and
expectations.
1. Instructional Expectations:
Identify the student learning outcomes and link to the appropriate Ontario curriculum documents.
2. Pre-assessment:
Identify previous knowledge and skills of students related to this lesson.
Note the classroom requirements.
Resources required for this lesson and related activities.
3. Introduction:
This is usually a brief opening activity or interaction designed to capture and focus students attention on what is to follow.
Note strategies used to bridge todays lesson with students prior knowledge and with what has been covered in previous
lessons.
4. Establishing Learning:
Identify appropriate learning steps/strategies (what students will be doing) and teaching strategies (what teacher will be
doing) that you will utilise to move students towards stated objectives in a systematic way.
In what ways have you taken account of particular learning needs of different students?
In what ways will you group learners and why?
5. Consolidation of Learning:
How will you ensure that new learning is consolidated, new ideas synthesised, key themes reinforced?
What authentic demonstrations are required to illustrate that learners understand new concepts, learning new skills,
exploring new attitudes?
7. Reflections and Looking Ahead to Subsequent Lesson (to be completed AFTER lesson)
To what degree were your objectives met? What influenced this? How could this lesson be improved to take account of
emerging factors?
Based on your reflections on this lessons effectiveness, what learning experiences and expectations should be included
in subsequent lessons with this class?
