EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Awareness) is a
rights-based NGO for adolescents living in difficult situations. DIKSHAs mission
is to create safe spaces for children and adolescents through building up their inner
strength and integrating individual development with
community needs. DIKSHA has always worked with both boys and girls
together to promote gender justice and held coed sessions through
real-life involvement as equal partners in change.
DIKSHA also works
with community adults and bodies of power (local councilors, police,
school teachers, employers of child labour) to develop support
groups for the young peoples work against all forms of child
abuse. This strategic approach has allowed DIKSHA to have a strong
community rooting and emerge as a collective where all operational
decisions are taken by a nine-member Work Group (seven females and two males), with only the
founder-coordinator and the admin manager being outsiders; the remaining seven are youth from
the communities we work with. The CBRT members (seven among whom are in the Work
Group, i.e. receiving salary/stipend from DIKSHA) have direct links with the local bodies of
power in all our work areas without needing any outsider intervention for access for support.
DIKSHA is a Rights Skills Building organization where marginalized youth help other
peers to know their rights; identify violations; and prevent, challenge, protest, resist and
prosecute violations and violators. Guided by the vision of a world where all young people can
access and exercise their rights DIKSHAs mission is to create safe spaces for children and

adolescents through building up their inner strength and integrating individual development with
community needs. As a psycho-social intervention programmed base particularly on the right to
protection through participation, DIKSHA works towards creating Community-based Resource
Teams of adolescents to facilitate the process of their evolution as community leaders, who make
informed choices regarding their development options and mechanisms, as also act as interveners
for ensuring the safety and security of children and adolescents of their communities.
DIKSHA works with youth and adults towards generating
community-based systems of protection for children facing multiple marginalizations. Working
from a rights-based approach with a focus on the right to protection through direct participation
of community members DIKSHA informs children in two red light areas and five slums
adjacent to one of these areas in Kolkata about their rights through regular sessions and build up
their skills and confidence for preventing, questioning and challenging situations of rights
violations. Session participants elect their own representatives as Community-based Resource
Team (CBRT) members, who act as 24X7 watchdogs and first contact points for immediate
intervention in case of any violation of child rights. CBRT members receive additional skills
building support towards leadership development.

special focus on child sexual abuse).
Looking from the funding and finance perspective, the entire source of revenue from the
past five years has been generated by conducting various sessions, workshops and from various
other schemes assigned by the Government of West Bengal. Apart from this, the entire financing
is taken care by the renowned NGO CRY (Child Rights And You), Kolkata.
DIKSHA is led by Mr. Bipuljit Basu under the supervision of Mrs. Paramita Banerjee
and coordinated by Mrs. Lopamudra Pal. It is a seven-member Work Group with only the
founder-coordinator and the administration manager being outsiders; the remaining seven are
youth from the communities we work with. All of them working together effectively to achieve
their desired goals and uplift the society from all the evils.

CONCLUSION

Diksha, as an organisation is doing their best to provide knowledge based education to
the underprivileged children belonging to the women involved in sex trade. Diksha is also
involved in different campaigns that they conduct a couple of times annually. With a staff
strength of 7, Diksha assures that every single child stays safe and the children especially the
girls(aged between 4 to 18) among them be well acquainted regarding their safety, treatment they
are receiving from the society, elderly men having negative intentions towards them to ruin their
life. Working with Diksha gave me immense pleasure in knowing them, the members who work
tremendously hard daily for the betterment of the children, the area they live from letting any
mishap occur. The children-who are beautiful souls each of them if nurtured properly can turn
into gems in future cause of their unique talent that each one of them possess.
