Tender Evaluation: Speed of

Thought
Project: Mars Rover
Executive Summary
This tender submission has been constructed to convince the designers from
Speed of Thought to select our company, Zanerobe ING. to construct their
designed mars rover prototype to an exceptional standard to ensure the
designs success. Our teams knowledge and attention to detail will allow us
to construct the mars rover at a more outstanding level than the other
contractors as shown through Appendix A1. The design package put forward
to us proves to contain no skill required that our team does not have
ensuring we will construct the mars rover precisely how it was intended.
Our team is capable of satisfying all aspects of Speed of Thoughts tender
evaluation criteria. Experience of power tools and power drills is favoured by
the designers in the construction of the mars rover. Our team not only has
used these power tools in previous projects such as those shown in Appendix
A1, but can use them at a desirable level allowing us to easily construct the
designed mars rover without difficulty.
The requirement of competency in woodworking skills also fall under this
category as we have previously taken woodwork classes in high school. This
will allow us to understand and implement proper safety measures and use
the equipment properly allowing us to develop the mars rover to an
adequate level for the designers. Evidence of this can be seen in Appendix
B1 where group members have excelled in these classes.
Our group communicate well and fast allowing the designers to easily
contact us and expect a response within 24 hours in a professional manner.
Our experience and attention to detail will allow us to bring forward new
ideas and minor improvements ensuring we will construct the rover with
minimal flaws allowing it to accomplish its desired task within the given time
frame.

1.0 Introduction
This document, on the behalf of Zanerobe ING. is comprised of the necessary
requirements for the tender of the construction of the mars rover designed
by Speed of Thought. It has been assembled to address Speed of Toughts
tender evaluation criteria to ensure the requirements are all reached and to
a standard that presents Zanerobe ING. as a more desired company to
contract the design rather than other contractors.

2.0 Design Package Review

Speed of Thoughts design package has been reviewed to ensure a thorough
understanding of the project at hand guaranteeing no confusions or
misconceptions.
2.1 Design Understanding
The mars rover design put forward by Speed of Thought includes thin sheets
of pine wood 12mm thick. The lack of a solid block of wood allows the cart to
fall with less impact as the mass of the cart is greatly decreased yet is strong
enough to survive the one metre fall. The wooden cross-support will supply
an adequate force to keep the two side frames from collapsing in on
themselves on impact and will ensure the axles remain straight. The
polystyrene wheels will provide the suspension required for the mars rover to
reduce impulse ultimately reducing damage to the cargo, a 600ml water
bottle. These aspects will allow the rover to travel two metres down a slope
of 30 45o degrees and then fall one metre.
2.2 Client Brief Compliance
The client brief requires a mars rover design to travel two metres, self-guided
down a 30 45o degree slope and then fall one metre to the ground without
experiencing great amounts of damage. The cargo, a 600ml bottle must be
able to be loaded onto the rover on not experience any substantial damage
on impact. The rover must not exceed the dimensions of 420mm x 297mm
and a maximum height of 210mm. The design by Speed of Thought follows
these limitations as can be seen in the table below.
Dimension Value (mm)
Length 310
Width 280
Height 150

The client brief also specifies that the cargo within the rover must be easily
assessed from one metre away without accessing the rover. The design
satisfies this criteria as the cargo hold is derived from a transparent 1.25L
bottle which will allow clear view of the cargo from the required distance with
ease.
The client brief also requires the total cost of the prototype to fall within $30.
The design presented does so therefore satisfies this field of the client brief.
There should be no manual control of the vehicle either after it has been
released on the slope until in hit the ground. The design by Speed of Thought
includes no such features or intent to control the vehicle manually therefore
not breaching the client brief. One set of wheels must be in contact with the
ground after landing. The design proves to ensure this by using wheels of a
higher height than that of the wooden body. This will allow it to land upside
down and still have the wheels in contact with the ground.
2.3 Concerns and Solutions
Zanerobe ING. the concern arising that if the cart does happen to flip upside
down or have a hard shaky impact, the 600ml bottle may fall out from the
1.25L bottle cargo holder. A solution to this problem may be attaching two
Velcro loops pieces on two side at the ending of the bottle. A longer strip of
Velcro hooks may be then connected to each piece allowing the open end of
the 1.25L bottle to be enclosed. This will still however follow the client brief
as it states complex assembly such as screwing may not be allowed in the
loading of the cargo.

3.0 Criteria
The criteria set by Speed of Thought will be displayed in italics below, and
Zanerobe ING.s response will be set in normal text.
3.1 Experience
Power Tools

Must provide reasonable evidence of experience using power tools;

experience with power drills will be especially favoured. Such evidence can
include a sample of previous work, a photograph of a team member
operating a power tool in accordance with safe procedure, or any other
suitable evidence the candidate sees fit. Woodworking Candidates must
provide evidence of woodworking experience, especially in regard to
construction projects. Marks will be attributed to the level of complexity of
the work for which evidence is provided.
Zanerobe ING. is a company that has experience in wood work and the use
of power tools. Power tools and power drills have been used in the
construction of previous projects for high school. Members have taken wood
work in school for several years and achieved excellent grades, higher than
the average student. This shows we have the necessary skill requirement to
assemble the mars rover and the required knowledge to operate the tools
needed for the construction of the rover. Appendix B1 shows evidence for the
high school word work classes.

3.2 Competancy
Woodworking
Marks in this category will be assigned according to the quality of the
woodwork for which evidence is provided in the Experience category.
Difficulty of the woodworking sample will be considered. Past Projects
Evidence should be provided of at least one past design project completed
for home use, or for school. This evidence can also be considered for the
other categories of Woodworking Competency Woodworking Experience,
and Power tools Experience. This evidence will be assessed for complexity,
quality and skill.
As can be seen through the marks achieved for high school word work
classes, our company shows a high level of competency in woodworking and
sue of power tools. Techniques such as carve grinding and power drilling
have been practiced and applied. Use of saws and other power tools along
with the proper safety gear is well practiced for our team allowing us to
easily carry out the task of construction the mars rover design put forward by
Speed of Thought. Previous projects can be seen in Appendix A1. These all
show the necessary skill requirements required to construct the mars rover
prototype therefore Zanerobe ING. will be surely competent in the
construction of this rover to its desired standards.
3.3 Timeliness
Punctual to meetings Must provide evidence that the candidate is punctual
to meetings i.e. been on time, provide written minutes from past experience
as an evidence Timely email response Candidate should check their email on
regular basis and able to reply clearly and detailed within 24 hours
Zanerobe ING. have communication skills at the level expected by Speed of
Thoughts tender evaluation criteria. Emails are replied to within 24 hours
and other online means of communication means we are able to keep the
team updated throughout the project ensuring everyone is up to date with
the progress.
3.4 Professionalism
Must keep their knowledge up to date. Candidate should have excellent
communication skills i.e. able to explain available options, state total cost,
do what he say and say what he can do.
Our teams excellent online communication skills and quick replies allows us
to all stay up to date on the progress of the project. Our knowledge and skills
allow us to put forwards solutions and options to any problems that arise and
communicate them across to all members ensuring any changes are 100%
confirmed with all members.
3.5 Understanding
Come up with new ideas (rough prototype) to ensure that the candidate in
able to understand. Candidate should clearly define criteria for success of
the project and develop plans according to it so that envisioned project is
delivered with fewest number of flaws.
Zanerobe ING defines the success of the project not only in assembling the
rover to the specifications of the designers, but to also outline any problems
and put forwards solutions to ensure the designed rover completes its exact
intent. Our teams knowledge in design and construction will prove to solve
any problems that may arise and put forward any suggestions to the
designers. The rover will be built precisely to the specifications to ensure the
designers satisfaction however any suggestions in bettering the rover will be
brought forward to the designers to ensure the rover works the best it can.
