Ideal Gas Law Apparatus

TD-8596A

Shown in use with an Absolute Pressure/Temperature Sensor

Overview
Investigating the Ideal Gas Law is simple using our Ideal Gas Law Apparatus. By
connecting a Pressure Sensor and a Temperature Sensor to this syringe, students can
quantitatively look at the relationships between pressure, temperature and volume.

The large syringe ensures accurate volume measurements and the stable design (updated
for 2010) means consistently repeatable results as well as long term reliability.

Typical Applications

Discover or verify the Ideal Gas Law

Investigate relationships such as pressure vs. temperature (Gay-Lussac's Law),

pressure vs. volume (Boyle's Law) and temperature vs. volume (Charles' Law)

Calculate the number of moles of air in the syringe based on pressure, temperature
and volume measurements

Includes

Ideal Gas Law Syringe

Built-in Fast Response Thermistor Probe
Quick Connect Pressure Port

How It Works

A low thermal mass thermistor is mounted within the syringe for real-time measurement of
temperature changes inside the syringe. Tubing and a quick connect port allows a Pressure
Sensor to be directly connected to the syringe. As the plunger of the syringe is depressed,
the volume decreases while pressure and temperature increase. The data will help students
better understand the Ideal Gas Law.

PV = nRT

A mechanical stop is included on the syringe plunger to prevent damage of the thermistor
within the syringe and to allow quick (adiabatic) volume changes.

Induction -- Magnet Through a Coil

The AC/DC Electronics Laboratory includes Teacher's Guide with Sample Data for each
experiment.

Sample Experiments:

Experiment 5 - Voltages in Circuits -- Students create circuits with three resistors in various
configurations. The circuits are powered by two D batteries, and a multimeter is used to
measure the voltage drop across the resistors in each configuration. Students are asked to
articulate the patterns they observe for voltage drops in various circuits.

Experiment 12 - RC Circuits -- Features the use of the Signal Generator to drive an RC

circuit. A Voltage Sensor is used to measure the voltage across the capacitor as it charges.
A voltage-time graph is created in DataStudio. Students are then asked to use this
information to calculate the time constant for the circuit.

Experiment 20 - Induction -- Using DataStudio and a Voltage Sensor, students can

measure the electromotive force (EMF) created when a magnet is dropped through a coil.
By integrating the voltage-time graph, students can also measure the changes in magnetic
flux created by the magnet.

Overview

These unique diode lasers were designed for use with the Basic Optics System and take
the frustration out of aligning the laser beam with the diffraction slits as they are mounted at
exactly the right height to use with other optical components. The horizontal and vertical
positions of the beam can be easily adjusted by turning the thumb screws on the back of
the laser.
And with both lasers you can demonstrate the effect of changing wavelength on the
diffraction and interference patterns. For example, pass a red laser beam through a double
slit. Then replace with the Green Diode Laser by simply pulling the Red Laser off the optics
track and clipping the Green Laser into its place. The recorded patterns from red and green
lasers show clearly that the longer wavelength (red) is spread out more than the green.

Super Fan Cart
ME-6977

Overview

Vector forces, Newton's Laws and even aerodynamics are all easily investigated with
PASCO's new Super Fan Cart.

Rotating the fan angle through 180 degrees allows for a qualitative and quantitative
investigation of vector forces. And the ability to program the fan to pulse for a specific time
aids in explaining both Newton's 1st and 2nd Laws as students will observe that the cart
only accelerates when the force is applied. You can even vary the speed of the fan or add
mass to the cart.

The removable sail is great for Newton's 3rd Law demonstrations as in one orientation it will
not move. However, in the opposite orientation the curved sail forces the air backwards and
creates thrust - a great demonstration of aeronautic principles.

Rugged with a rechargeable battery and useful for exploring a number of physics principles,
you'll find yourself reaching for the Super Fan Cart over and over again.

See All Carts and Tracks

accessories.

Features

Adjust thrust angle to teach about vector forces: Fan turns through 180

Vary the Mass without changing the Force: Accessory Mass Tray for ME-6755

Pulse Duration: Program fan to be pulsed on for specific time to demonstrate

acceleration only occurs when a force is applied. Includes time delay and auto-repeat
option.

Adjustable Fan Speed: Apply different forces using three standard settings or the
continuously variable setting. Regulated power supply gives constant thrust even as
the battery discharges.

Rechargeable Battery: Lithium-Polymer battery runs fan continuously on medium

thrust for about 1.5 hour. Recharges in about 1 hour.

The Net Force is Zero: Removable sail can be used two ways: When positioned as
shown, the sail cancels the forward air flow and there is no thrust. If the sail is
reversed, its curved shape reflects the air backwards, causing the cart to move in the
opposite direction.

Basic Electrometer
ES-9078A

Overview

The redesigned PASCO Basic Electrometer features clear and easily readable LED meter
and digits displays. This Electrometer is a quantitative electroscope, measuring the polarity
and magnitude of charged objects. It has a sensitivity nearly one thousand times that of a
standard goldleaf electroscope, a center-zero meter display that directly indicates charge
polarity, and a digits display.

With almost infinite input resistance (1014 ohm), the Electrometer is a high impedance
voltmeter, draining almost no charge from the object it is measuring, and it is especially
suited for measuring charge in electrostatic experiments.

Experiment Samples

Equal and Opposite Charge by Contact -- The polarity indication of the

Electrometer is most useful when showing that equal and opposite charges are
produced by contact. The two different materials (on the ends of the wands held by
the student) are rubbed together and the charges measured in the Faraday Ice Pail.
The Electrometer shows the charges are equal and opposite. If both materials are
placed in the pail together, the net charge is zero.
The Q=CV Relation -- The Electrometer allows the student to measure the change
in voltage across the capacitor plates as the separation is varied. Other experiments
with the Basic Variable Capacitor and Electrometer include:

o Measuring the charge density on the plates as a function of voltage or plate

separation.

o Adding discrete amounts of charge to the plates (with a proof plane) and
measuring the discrete increases in voltage. Q=CV can now be an
experiment, not just a theory.

Charge Distribution During Charge by Induction -- Most students find it difficult

to believe that on a conductive surface, the charge distribution can be uneven. In this
experiment, a Sphere at 3000 V inductively charges an initially neutral sphere. At each
step of the process, a Proof Plane is used to sample the charge at a certain location.
The charge on the proof plane is then measured using the Faraday Ice Pail and
Electrometer. Show the process, not just the results, of charge by induction.

Five Reasons to Use an Electrometer

Quantitative Readout: The linear scale is a major advantage of the Electrometer.

While an electroscope is only roughly quantitative, the Electrometer produces
readings to 3%. Verify physical laws and to determine if relations are linear or
exponential. The Electrometer allows the student to measure rather than just observe.

Direct Polarity Indication: Where polarity distinction is required, the electroscope

is inconvenient; a known reference charge must be used. The Electrometer, by
contrast, directly indicates polarity on a center-zero meter.

Adjustable Sensitivity: The full scale sensitivity of the Electrometer is adjustable.

Unlike the electroscope where the experiment must be adjusted to the measuring
instrument, the Electrometer adjusts to the experiment.

High Sensitivity: Increases the variety and scope of electrostatics demonstrations.

Many electrostatics demonstrations theoretically possible with an electroscope are
difficult because of the 100,000 VDC and higher voltages required. Such voltages are
difficult to work with and hard to measure.

Large Display Capability: Although the unit is designed for small group use, the
Electrometer may be connected easily (cable included) to a ScienceWorkshop
Interface. With the use of DataStudio software, a meter display that fits the monitor
can be produced.

PASCO Electrometer Features

Center-Zero Meter: Polarity is indicated directly.

Switch-Selectable Ranges: 3, 10, 30 and 100 VDC. LED lights indicate the range
in use.

Zeroing Switch: Removes all charge from the input and brings the meter to zero.

Automatic Shutoff: Turns off about 3 hours after turned on (or used in any way).

Output Compatible with PASCO Interfaces: The interface cable included with the
electrometer connects directly to an analog channel on a ScienceWorkshop interface,
and connects to a PASPORT interface through an Analog Adapter. This enables the
output signal from the electrometer to be recorded, displayed, and analyzed by the
data acquisition software.

Battery Operation: 4 "AA" cells included. Range indicator lights flash when
batteries need to be replaced.

PASPORT Motion Sensor
PS-2103A

Overview

Whether measuring the motion of a ball, a dynamics cart or a person, you need good, clean
data from your Motion Sensor. Our Motion Sensor uses false target rejection technologyno
more spikes or other discontinuities in your data.
Objects can be as close as 15 cm, leaving more space on your table for
experiments (many motion sensors require objects to be 40 cm away, half the width of
a lab table).

Produces more accurate data from your air track - ignores ultrasonic signals
produced by air jets.

Typical Applications

Discover the relationship between position, velocity and acceleration

Study Conservation of Energy and Momentum during collisions

Monitor the sinusoidal motion of a mass on a spring

Measure the motion of large objects, such as students

Special Features

Reports position, velocity and acceleration

False Target Rejection Technology for clean data

Switch-selectable short range and long range settings

Snaps onto PASCO dynamics tracks

Mounts directly to rods for easy positioning

360 pivoting head

PASPORT or ScienceWorkshop?
PASPORT sensors connect directly to all current PASCO interfaces.

ScienceWorkshop sensors connect directly to the 550 and 850 Universal Interfaces as well
as legacy ScienceWorkshop interfaces. They can connect to other PASCO interfaces with
the use of an adapter. More info.

How It Works

An electrostatic transducer in the face of the Motion Sensor transmits a burst of 16

ultrasonic pulses with a frequency of about 49 kHz. The ultrasonic pulses reflect off a target
and return to the face of the sensor. The target indicator flashes when the transducer
detects an echo.

The sensor measures the time between the trigger rising edge and the echo rising edge. It
uses this time and the speed of sound to calculate the distance to the object. To determine
velocity, it used consecutive position measurements to calculate the rate of change of
position. Similarly, determines acceleration by using consecutive velocity measurements.

Photogate & Pulley System

ME-6838A - Get Quote

Measure the motion of a pulley system using this combination photogate and low-
friction pulley. For use with PASPORT and ScienceWorkshop Interfaces.
Select

Overview

The PASCO Photogate Head has a narrow infrared beam and a fast fall time that
provide very accurate signals for timing. When the infrared beam between the source
and detector is blocked, the output voltage of the photogate is low, and the red LED
(light emitting diode) on the photogate goes on. When the beam is not blocked, the
output voltage is high, and the LED is off. The Accessory Photogate also includes a
sturdy base and stand.
The Photogate/Pulley System uses a photogate head to monitor low-friction pulley
rotation, providing a simple, versatile sensor. Calculate and graph position, velocity,
acceleration of carts, masses, etc. Additionally, the pulley can be removed, and the
photogate can be used to perform photogate experiments.
Photogates and Fences for Dynamics Systems provide a wide range of time, speed and
velocity measurements. The photogates mount to the dynamics track using the provided
brackets. The "picket fences" provided mount directly to the dynamics carts. When used
with the computer, the system can perform data recording, display and analysis.
Connectivity
The original ScienceWorkshop photogate, this sensor connects directly to the digital
inputs of the 550 or 850 Universal Interfaces and to legacy ScienceWorkshop interfaces.
To use it with PASPORT interfaces like the AirLink requires a Digital Adapter. See the

Overview

The PASCO Color Mixer can be used as both a demonstration tool and as an expansion
piece to the Basic Optics System.

The intensity of the red, green and blue LEDs of the Color Mixer can be individually
adjusted to easily vary the intensity of any or all of them. Demonstrating additive color
mixing is as simple as using any flat surface to project the light upon.

Show how white light is produced and explore the secondary colors of cyan, magenta and
yellow. Vary the intensities to produce nearly any color. Provides a way to demonstrate
how televisions produce a full range of colors and a visual demonstration to discuss UV
absorption and the color of the ocean or why Rayleigh scattering produces an orange
sunset.

The Color Mixer also connects easily to an optics track and can be used with components
of the Basic Optics system in laboratory investigations. Using a lens and viewing screen
from the Basic Optics system the Color Mixer can be focused and projected at each lab
station. And by adjusting the screen and lens position, students can control the overlap of
colors.

The Color Mixer Accessory Kit has 18 cards (64 mm x 89 mm) and a manual with 9
associated lab activities. Each of the 7 filter cards has its transmission spectrum printed on
the card. Each of the 11 color cards is printed with a different color and its associated
relative reflectance spectrum. Printed colors are defined by the Pantone color matching
system. This accessory kit was designed especially for use with the Color Mixer.

Time-of-Flight Accessory
ME-6810

Overview

The Time-of-Flight Accessory is designed primarily for free fall or projectile experiments.
When a projectile is launched or object dropped, a photogate starts the timing of one of
PASCO's timing systems. When the object hits the plate of the Time-of-Flight Accessory
and makes a noise, a signal is sent to the interface to stop the timer. The signal is identical
to the signal sent by a blocked photogate.

When used with PASCO's Projectile Launchers (ME-6800, ME-6801), the Time-of-Flight
Accessory demonstrates the relationship between time-of-flight, angle, distance, and initial
velocity.

How It Works

To use any of the components, place them on a flat tabletop in the path of rays from your
ray box (not included). Place a white sheet of paper on the table to facilitate ray tracing and
make the rays more visible.

To study a lens made of air and surrounded by water, use the storage box as a water tank.
Remove the foam insert but leave the white plastic sheet under the box to serve as a
reflective surface. Put the hollow lens in the box with a small weight on top to keep it from
floating. Fill the box with water just below the top of the hallow lens. Use an eye dropper or
pipette to empty and fill sections of the lens.

850 Universal Interface
UI-5000
Overview

The 850 is PASCOs most flexible interface and is designed specifically to be used in
conjunction with the powerful PASCO Capstone software.

The 850 interface boasts four digital inputs, four analog ports, four PASPORT sensor ports,
a 15 W function generator, dual high speed function generators and much more.

The Four Digital Inputs allow direct use of photogates and other digital sensors (such as
Time-of-Flight), with no adapter needed! The four analog inputs can be used with PASCOs
entire line of analog CI sensors. Plug voltage sensors into them and measure voltages to
20 V at sample rates of up to 10 MHz on 1 or 2 channels or 1 MHz on four channels.

The four PASPORT sensor ports accept any of the more than 70 available PASPORT
sensors. And ScienceWorkshop and PASPORT sensors can be used together meaning
that there are over 120 sensors to choose from to meet any application.

The outputs on the 850 include a 15 Watt Function generator which supplies up to 15 V @
1 A, DC and AC. Both the output voltage and current are measured directly by the 850 and
can be recorded as data.

Waveforms include sine, triangle, square and ramp (all with DC offset), with a frequency
range of 0.001 Hz to 100 kHz. The two additional Function Generators supply low power at
higher frequencies (up to 500 kHz), with independent control of frequency, waveform,
amplitude and phase shift.

Economy Resonance Tube
WA-9495

Shown with the Open Speaker and Sine Wave Generator (sold separately)

Overview

Students will have no difficulty hearing resonant frequencies from this tube. Two nested
cardboard tubes with a removable inner stopper allow students to perform resonance
experiments on both open and closed tubes.
Using the inner plunger tube to vary the length of the column of air within allows students to
investigate the effects of length on the resonant frequencies. A measuring tape is mounted
to the plunger tube to indicate the effective length.
Remove the plunger tube and an open tube of constant length remains for further
investigations. Students can vary sound source frequency to investigate an open-tube
resonant frequency pattern.

Suggested Activities

Determine lengths of the tube at which resonance occurs when the frequency is
constant.

Determine the frequencies at which resonance occurs when the length of the tube
is held constant.

Determine the speed of sound in air.

Find the relationship between closed-tube and open-tube resonant lengths.

Features

A removable end cap on inner tube allows air column to act as either an "open" or a
"closed" tube.

A metric scale on the inner tube has two rows of measurements; one indicates
resonating length when the plug is in place, the other for when the plug is removed.

Convenient tube stands ensure that the tube does not roll off the table.

Overview
The Ballistic Pendulum Accessories are designed to be used with either a Short Range
Launcher or Mini Launcher. Ituses a Rotary Motion Sensor to measure the speed of the
catcher assembly immediately after the collision, as well as the maximum height to which
the pendulum swings. The Rotary Motion Sensor can also be used to measure the
rotational inertia of the pendulum, for detailed study of the collision using conservation of
angular momentum.

The rigid pendulum can be attached to the Rotary Motion Sensor at two locations (at the
end of the rod and at its center) to vary the Rotational Inertia. In addition, the included
Ballast Mass can be added to the end of the pendulum to increase the inertia. The Rotary
Motion Sensor can also be mounted with its rotation axis vertical, allowing the pendulum to
swing around in a horizontal circle, to study collisions without involving gravity and changes
in potential energy.

The initial launch velocity of the ball can be calculated using projectile motion, or measured
directly using photogates (not included).

Charge Producers and Proof Plane
ES-9057C

Overview

The Charge Producers create equal positive and negative charges when rubbed together.
The Proof Plane samples the charge density from a charged object. The charge can then
be measured using the Electrometer and Faraday Ice Pail.

The Charge Producers and Proof Plane also now feature a conducting tip at the bottom of
each handle.
The Aperture Bracket (OS-8534A) is an accessory for the:
