INTRODUCTION
The profile of the progress is a compilation of industrial data designed to give the leader an
overview of the population, job base and job growth trends of the Greater San Juan area. The
region, with ancompasses San Juan, Bellville, Santa Maria and Williston, continuous to lead
the way in Californias recovery from the economic slump during the early 90s. The
following report discusses both the data collection methodology and a summary of the
findings.

METHODOLOGY
The Sample

The sample for this study was selected from the first quarter 1995 Employment and Wages
report submitted to the California Department of Labor by the regions employers. The
universe was stratified by standard industrial classification codes. Prosedures involved all
certainty cases.

Collection Prosedures

The majority of the data was collected
by mail. Each selected establishment a
structured schedule for there spesific
industry. The survey from included
thye following :
Instruction, occupational title and
definition, business identification and
standard industrial classification code.
Survey procedures included three
follow-up mailings to non-
respondents. The telephone was used
extensively to clarify data and to
canvas critical non-respondents. The
demographic statistics for the region
was extracted from the 1990 census
data.

SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
Population

The 1995 profile of progress presents a growth statistic that continuous to

display the dinamic growth of the San Juan Region. In 1990, the total population
of the San Juan region was 192,457. This represent an increase of 48 persent
over the 1980 figures and an increase of 150 persent increase over the 1970
figures. Greater numbers of jobs in the defense and the computer industries
accounted primarily for the population increases. Figure 1 depicts this dramatic
growth.

Diversifying San Juan

Diversification, induced in part by natural forces, along with the ingenuity f area
business leader is largerly responsible for the continued growth in the San Juan
area. Figure 2 shows the makeup of the employing community.

Job Openings

According to our survey of the regions employers, on average, the occupational

groups requiring the most education will also see the fastest job growth
opportunities. Figure 3 lists the projected jobs openings during the next five
years, including those due to replacement needs and those due to employement
increase.

CONCLUSION

Current population growth trends indicate that the Greater San Juan area will
provide a steady job force for the next five to ten years. The diversity of the area
industries wilol continue to provide 4,000 to 5,000 new jobs over the next five
years in current trends continue.
