Project 1: Revise the Incomplete and Redo Policies

Reason: We are seeing what appears to be an increase in students who are taking advantage of

the incomplete and redo policies. We want to ensure that we are cultivating a culture of

mastering the content and skills, and not a complacent work ethic.

Solution: With about 30% of our students having been graded as incomplete and about a third of

those students being repeat offenders, we need a better way of handling their incomplete work.

Teachers have given many hours to discuss and rewrite the incomplete and redo policies. The

school is currently in the process of reviewing this draft and hopes to implement it for the new

school year. This plan includes relegating the status of incomplete to formative assignments, with

the thought being that those assignments prepare you for the summative ones and failing to

complete those formative pieces will almost assuredly lead to doing poorly on the summative

assignments. The redo policies are being scaffolded to limit the number of redos as students get

older, with the hopes that by the time they are seniors, they will not need to make use of this

policy at all.
Project 2: Increasing Student Discipline and Accountability
Reason: We have a huge problem with assigning penance halls that dont get served. We want to

see our students held accountable to the standards we have set in place to help them grow and

develop into responsible young adults.

Artifact 1: Statements from the Student Handbook

- Students who receive a PH must report after school as directed by the Dean of Student

Affairs.
- Students that fail to attend PH will be subject to further disciplinary consequences,

including additional PHs.

The following data was collected on 4/19/17.

Solution: Steps have already been taken to fix this problem. The room for PH has now been

assigned to one room, rather than the room of whichever teacher is running it that week.

Teachers have begun meeting to discuss ideas with the Dean of Student Affairs. We have made

suggestions that include having just one or two individuals run PH through the year instead of

rotating through the entire faculty. We have also suggested adjusting our daily bell schedule to

allow for PH to be served during lunch, so that students dont use parents and pick up as an

excuse to get out of PH.

Project 3: Developing the Performing Arts Program
Reason: Our students have expressed an interest in having more options for their fine arts

requirement.

Artifact 3: Personal Testimonies from Current Students of the Theater Program

They were given the prompt: How has having a theater program at CRJ affected your

time/experience here? Only 1 or 2 sentences is necessary.

- Theater has become my escape in my hectic life. It allows me to express myself when I

cannot during a rough time.

- Having a theater program at CRJ has helped me come out of [my] shell. Starting out at a

new school where most students did not know me and I did not know them was
something intimidating for me. It helped me create great bonds with some amazing

people and it made me realize what I would like to major in at college. I learned how to

use my voice with a purpose and I also found my passion. Theater is not something that is

just for a temporary time. It is something I found a calling in and I fell in love with it. I

don't know where I'd be without it.

- Having a theatre club has really helped me be more social and interactive at school. It

also showed [me] how much I love performance!

- Having a theater program here at CRJ has made me happier and excited to come to

school. Back in middle school I was never excited, I never had anything to look forward

to, but now I can look forward to shows that will help me with skills I'll need to be a

theater major. I'm also happy to know that there are people who share the same love for

the stage like I do.

Artifact 4: In the past year, weve emptied out a storage room and reformatted it into a proper

theater room. We have slowly acquired supplies and equipment to better suit our needs. As of

May 5, 2017, this is what the room now looks like.

Solution: Cristo Rey Jesuit has already expanded its fine arts offerings after this survey was

conducted. In the past year, we have increased the number of theater classes from one to two and

added a music class. The theater extracurricular program has also developed and evolved very

quickly in its short, two year existence by adding a point system and developing a program to
allow students to direct their own shows. The choir has expanded its recruitment efforts, both

with students and faculty, and has committed to more regular practices. The next step is

acquiring new spaces and equipment to better allow us to further our crafts and talents as well as

encourage more students to attend performances and even to audition and join in themselves.
