Lesson Focus Learning Area / Year Level Implementation

Strand Date: 5/5/17

3D shapes 3
Math Duration- 20
mins
Prior knowledge of learners: students have been taught 3D shapes but are needing
more work in recognising them
Lesson objectives: Students are to recognise 3D shapes that are shown to them as well
as know how many faces, edges and vertices. Students will also have the opportunity to
build a 3D shape from plasticine and matchsticks.

Evidence of learning: Students will draw up a table in their math books to display their
understanding
Resources: Math books, pencils, plasticine, matchsticks, whiteboard and marker
(teacher) and 3D shapes.
Square based pyramid, Triangular prism, sphere, cone, rectangular prism and a
hemisphere.
Lesson Introduction Explain to the students that they will be learning about 3D
shapes today.
Introducing the topic
Engagement of the Ask what are vertices?
learners
What is an edge?

What is a face?

Who can remember any 3D shapes

What is their 2D shape?

Hold each 3D shape up to show the students and then ask what
the name of the shape is.

Discuss the shape and talk about the 2D shape that matches
the 3D one.

Lesson Body Students get a chance to hold the shapes and answer the
questions.
Delivering the content
through specific Lots of time will be needed here to allow students to fully
strategies understand the concept of 3D shapes.

Make sure that 1 shape is done at a time, which allows

questions from the students and to understand the explanation.

Lesson Conclusion Once the students have completed the task they will then be
able to play with the plasticine and create a 3D shape of their
Concluding activities choice (from the ones that have been explored).
Summarizing the
lesson
Evaluation / Reflection: more work will be need in this area due to difference of
pyramids and prisms. Students and I myself found this confusing on how to know which
was which. Also vertices and faces need more time on fully understanding the concepts. I
explained to the students in a high school manner and need to re assess the way I deliver
it next time.
