QUESTION 1

a) The ABS polymer can be produced by varying amount of acrylonitrile (A), butadine
(B), and styrene (S) monomers. Suggest how you would adjust the composition of
ABS if you want to use it to manufacture:
i. Car bumpers. Explain your reason

ii. Liners of chemical reactor. Explain your reason.

b) List four (4) characteristics of ceramic materials.

c) Select appropriate type of materials that can be used for the application in Table 1.
State the desired properties that suit to each application. Candidate is required to

QUESTION 2

a) Copper has face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with atomic radius of 0.14 nm. In a
cubic unit cell
i. Sketch the plane with the Miller index of (110)
[2 marks]
ii. Calculate the planar density of plane (110)
[4 marks]
iii. Sketch the vector with the direction index of [001]
[2 marks]
iv. Calculate the linear density in the direction [001]
[4 marks]

b) Show that atomic packing factor for the BCC structure is 0.68
[4 marks]

c) Student A: Do you agree with the statement Covalently bonded materials are
generally less dense than ionically or metallically bonded ones.

QUESTION 3

a) Chemists have developed models for bonding and structure. These models are used to
explain different properties of metals and non-metals.

i. Draw a labelled diagram to show the currently accepted model for metallic
bonding.

b) With a neat sketch, explain the following type of imperfection:


i. Vacancy
ii. Self-interstitial
iii. Volume defect

c) A Duralumin (Aluminum-Copper alloy) initially containing 0.4 wt% Cu quenched at


a cooling process and in an atmosphere that gives a surface Aluminum concentration
constant at 1.0 wt%. If after 43 h the concentration of copper is 0.55 wt% at a
position 4.0 mm below the surface, determine the diffusion coefficient of copper for
the treatment.

QUESTION 4

a) When a tensile load is applied to a 20.0 mm cylindrical brass rod, the diameter is
reduced to 19.45 mm. Determine the applied load, given that the Poissons ratio and
modulus elasticity are 0.36 and 97 GPa.

b) With a neat sketch, distinguish between elastic deformation and plastic deformation.

c) Table 2 is tabulated data that were gathered from a series of Charpy impact test on

a) Upon solidification, an alloy of eutectic composition forms a microstructure


consisting of alternating layers of the two solid phases. Why this happen? Give your
reason.

b) Cite three (3) variables that determine the microstructure of an alloy.

c) Based on the Pb-Sn phase diagram (Figure 1), answer the following question

i. Distinguish between and .
