Dear Mr. Gilbert,

Hello, my name is Mckenna Donaldson and currently I am a freshman at the University
of New Mexico and working towards my Bachelors in Fine Arts with a focus in painting. Ever
since I was a little girl I have always loved art. Nothing excited me more than art class in my
elementary school all the way to taking AP art in high school. Creating art and utilizing my
creative mind is one of my strongest qualities when tasked assignments. It requires me to think
outside of the box and to look at situations from various angles to produce a solution.
Upon going to college I have discovered that my growing love for art and developing
talent require more than just tough classes and professors. It requires a lot of time and dedication
on my current projects, as well as practice to improve my skills and understanding of art. One of
the costlier requirements of art are the copious amounts of supplies I will be needing each
semester paints, canvases, drawing pads, pencils, etc. The supplies that I require are not just
materials one can get at the Dollar Store, but good quality supplies that will last years of decay
due to light and the earths forces. Unfortunately, good art supplies are not cheap and need to be
restocked once I have used all the materials.
This is where the Stump Scholarship comes into play and can assist me on my journey to
becoming a better artist. Through acquiring this scholarship, college and art supplies are just a
little bit cheaper and will allow me to focus more on my art and less on my finances.
Mr. Gilbert, I know you are a busy man, but your consideration for this scholarship will
not only help with the cost of college, but it will allow my skills to flourish in the future years to
come. Thank you for your time and your consideration; you can reach me through the following

MWA2 Reflection

Writing this scholarship proposal letter was more personal to me than any of the other writings

we have done in the class; this is because I am very passionate about needing money in order to

get new and better art supplies. As an art student, I dont have to buy books, clickers or online

applications needed for class, I need supplies paints, canvases, pencils, markers, you name it. If

its art supplies, I need it. Unfortunately, art supplies are not cheap and I run through supplies

really fast, and spending $20 a tube of paint can get very expensive over time. So writing about

why I need a scholarship for art supplies was something I was interested in and passionate about.

I was able to keep the focus of my paper on the scholarship by mentioning that I needed art

supplies as well as general funds for my art career; and the only way this could be achieved was

through the Stump scholarship. Pitching myself was not too difficult because I talk about my

relationship with art a lot, and I express my passion and desires to become a better artist quite

frequently. I like to challenge myself and see what better and newer things I can create; this

passion is what I hoped to convey in my proposal letter. Originally, I was planning on changing

my entire proposal letter for a job I was trying to apply for, however upon reading this proposal

that I had first written, I figured that I would benefit from applying for this scholarship more than

wasting my time trying to apply for a job interview that I was not too interested in to begin with.

The SLOs influenced my proposal letter in the following ways:

Outcome C, Writing as a Process I had to do some research to find a scholarship that I would

have a chance to apply to, as well as finding the person who was holding this scholarship so I

could write directly to them. I also had to send my paper to a peer reviewer in class and her

feedback allowed me to rework my writing and make it sound more applicable for the

scholarship.
Outcome I, Research The only research I had conducted for this writing assignment was the on

research the scholarship I could apply for. I had to see if I was even eligible for the scholarship

and I had to see if it would benefit me. This required me to do some looking into various types of

fine art scholarships as well as the people who were in charge of this scholarship. However, the

research I had conducted for how expensive the art supplies are, is caused by me going into an

art store and looking at the supplies I want prices arent pretty!

Outcome E, Grammar and Usage For this assignment, I had to make sure my grammar and

syntax were smooth and flowed well, I would not look like a qualified candidate if my proposal

letter was not articulate or coherent.
