This British Standard is the official English language version of
EN 13306:2001.

Komitee CEN/TC 319 "Instandhaltung" erarbeitet,
dessen Sekretariat vom DIN gehalten wird.
Diese Europische Norm mu den Status einer
nationalen Norm erhalten, entweder durch
Verffentlichung eines identischen Textes oder
durch Anerkennung bis Oktober 2001, und etwaige
entgegenstehende nationale Normen mssen bis
Oktober 2001 zurckgezogen werden.

Introduction
The purpose of this european standard is to define the
generic terms used for all types of maintenance and
maintenance management irrespective of the type of
item considered except software.
It is the responsibility of any maintenance manage-
ment to define its maintenance strategy according to
three main criteria:
to ensure the availability of the item for the
required function, often at optimum costs;
to consider the safety requirements associated
with the item for both maintenance and user per-
sonnel, and, where necessary, any impact on the
environment;
to uphold the durability of the item and/or the
quality of the product or service provided consider-
ing, where necessary, costs.
As a part of the requirement of TC 319 it was
necessary to produce a comprehensive structured
maintenance vocabulary standard containing, the main
terms and their definitions.
Introduction
L'objet de cette norme europnne est de dfinir les
termes gnriques utiliss pour tous les types de main-
tenance et d'organisation de la maintenance,
indpendamment du type de bien considr,
l'exception des logiciels.
Il est de la responsabilit de toute organisation de
maintenance de dfinir sa stratgie de maintenance
selon trois critres principaux:
assurer la disponibilit du bien pour la fonction
requise, souvent au cot optimun;
tenir compte des exigences de scurit relatives
au bien la fois pour le personnel de maintenance
et le personnel d'exploitation, et si cela est
ncessaire, tenir compte des rpercussions sur
l'environnement;
amliorer la durabilit du bien et/ou la qualit du
produit ou du service fournis, en tenant compte des
cots si ncessaire.
Dans le cadre de la mission impartie au TC 319 il tait
ncessaire de produire une norme structure de
vocabulaire de la maintenance, contenant les
principaux termes et leurs dfinitions.

Einleitung
Der Zweck dieser europischen Norm ist die Definition
der Grundbegriffe fr alle Instandhaltungsarten und fr
das Instandhaltungsmanagement, unabhngig von der
Art der betrachteten Einheit, mit Ausnahme von Soft-
ware.
Es liegt in der Verantwortung jedes Instandhaltungs-
managements, die Instandhaltungsstrategie ent-
sprechend dreier Hauptkriterien zu definieren:
die Verfgbarkeit der Einheit fr die geforderte
Funktion zu sichern, oftmals zu optimalen Kosten;
die mit der Einheit verbundenen Sicherheits-
anforderungen zu beachten, sowohl fr die In-
standhaltung als auch fr das Bedienungspersonal
und wenn erforderlich alle Einflsse auf die
Umwelt;
die Haltbarkeit der Einheit und/oder die Qualitt
des gelieferten Produktes oder der gelieferten
Dienstleistung zu erhalten, wenn notwendig unter
Beachtung der Kosten.
Als Teil der Forderungen von TC 319 war es not-
wendig, eine umfassende, strukturierte Norm eines
Instandhaltungswrterbuches zu erstellen, welches die
Hauptbegriffe und ihre Definitionen enthlt.

Maintenance provides an essential contribution to
the dependability of an item. Correct and formal
definitions are required which will give the user of
associated maintenance standards a better under-
standing of the maintenance requirements. These
requirements may be of particular importance in the
formulation of maintenance contracts.
The terms contained in this standard indicate that
maintenance is not confined to the technical actions
but includes all the activities such as planning,
documentation handling and many others.
The standard IEC 60050 (191) has been used as a
basis for the preparation of this standard but some
terms have been modified and some terms have
been added. Not all terms specified in IEC 60050
(191) are included in this european standard.
1 Scope
This European Standard specifies generic terms and
definitions for the technical, administrative and
managerial areas of maintenance. It is not intended
to be applicable to terms which are used for the
maintenance of software only.
2 Fundamental terms
2.1 Maintenance
Combination of all technical, administrative and
managerial actions during the life cycle of an item
intended to retain it in, or restore it to, a state in
which it can perform the required function.
NOTE See also the definitions of improvement and modi-
fication.
La maintenance apporte une contribution essentielle
la sret de fonctionnement d'un bien. L'utilisateur
des normes de maintenance a besoin de dfinitions
correctes et formalises pour mieux comprendre les
exigences de la maintenance. Ces exigences
peuvent avoir une importance particulire dans la
rdaction des contrats de maintenance.
Les termes contenus dans cette norme montrent que
la maintenance n'est pas confine aux activits tech-
niques mais inclut toutes les activits telles que la
planification, la gestion de la documentation, etc.
La CEI 60050 (191) a servi de base pour la
prparation de la prsente norme, mais quelques
termes ont t modifis et d'autres ajouts. Les
termes dfinis par la CEI 60050 (191) ne sont pas
tous inclus dans la prsente norme europenne.
1 Objet
La prsente norme europenne prsente les termes
gnraux et leurs dfinitions pour les domaines
techniques, administratifs et de gestion de la mainte-
nance. Elle ne s'applique pas aux termes utiliss
pour la maintenance des logiciels.
2 Termes fondamentaux
2.1 Maintenance
Ensemble de toutes les actions techniques,
administratives et de management durant le cycle de
vie d'un bien, destines le maintenir ou le rtablir
dans un tat dans lequel il peut accomplir la fonction
requise.
NOTE Voir aussi les dfinitions d'amlioration et de modifi-
cation.
Die Instandhaltung liefert einen wesentlichen Beitrag
zur Funktionsfhigkeit der Einheit. Es werden
korrekte und genaue Definitionen bentigt, die den
Benutzern der einschlgigen Instandhaltungsnormen
ein besseres Verstndnis der Instandhaltungsanfor-
derungen bieten sollen. Diese Anforderungen
knnen bei der Abfassung von Instandhaltungsver-
trgen von besonderer Wichtigkeit sein.
Die in dieser Norm enthaltenen Begriffe zeigen, da
Instandhaltung nicht auf technische Manahmen
beschrnkt ist, sondern alle Ttigkeiten wie Planung,
Dokumentation und viele andere einschliet.
Die Norm IEC 60050 (191) wurde als Grundlage fr
die Ausarbeitung dieser Norm verwendet, aber
einige Begriffe wurden verndert und einige Begriffe
wurden hinzugefgt. Nicht alle der in IEC 60050
(191) festgel egten Begri ffe si nd i n di eser
europischen Norm enthalten.
1 Anwendungsbereich
Diese europische Norm legt die Grundbegriffe und
Definitionen fr alle technischen und administrativen
Bereiche sowie den Managementbereich der In-
standhaltung fest. Sie ist nicht fr Begriffe vorge-
sehen, die ausschlielich fr die Instandhaltung von
Software verwendet werden.
2 Grundbegriffe
2.1 Instandhaltung
Kombination aller technischen und administrativen
Manahmen sowie Manahmen des Managements
whrend des Lebenszyklus einer Einheit zur Erhal-
tung des funktionsfhigen Zustandes oder der
Rckfhrung in diesen, so da sie die geforderte
Funktion erfllen kann.

2.2 Maintenance management
All activities of the management that determine the
maintenance objectives, strategies, and responsi-
bilities and implement them by means such as main-
tenance planning, maintenance control and supervi-
sion, improvement of methods in the organization
including economical aspects.
2.3 Maintenance objectives
Targets assigned and accepted for the maintenance
activities.
NOTE These targets may include for example availability,
cost reduction, product quality, environment preservation,
safety.
2.4 Maintenance strategy
Management method used in order to achieve the
maintenance objectives.
2.5 Maintenance plan
Structured set of tasks that include the activities,
procedures, resources and the time scale required
to carry out maintenance.
2.6 Required function
Function or a combination of functions of an item
which are considered necessary to provide a given
service.

2.7 Dependability
Collective item used to describe the availability and
its influencing factors: reliability, maintainability and
maintenance supportability.
NOTE Dependability is used only for general descriptions
in non-quantitative terms.
2.8 Maintenance supportability
Ability of a maintenance organization of having the
right maintenance support at the necessary place to
perform the required maintenance activity at a given
instant of time or during a given time interval.

3.1 Item
Any part, component, device, subsystem, functional
unit, equipment or system that can be individually
considered.
NOTE A number of items e.g. a population of items, or a
sample, may itself be considered as an item.
3.2 Asset
A formally accountable item.
