Antigone- Rebels Project

Objective
You will research a modern-day rebel who embodies the same traits as
Antigone. You will create a poster board with images and brief write-
ups, and give a 2-3 minute informative speech on your
rebel. Total: 50 points.

Details
Choose a person who has broken laws for moral reasons,
pushed boundaries, or stood up to those in power to make a
statement. This rebel must have lived during the past 100
years and made significant contributions to society. You may
choose any figure that you want, but you must have this
person approved by me.

Your poster board should display at least 2 images of your

modern-day rebel. Also, you must include a brief summary of
the rebels life and one paragraph comparing the rebel to Antigone. Be creative in
your presentation! Poster board: 25 points.

In class, you will give a 2-3 minute informative speech on your modern-day
rebel. Focus on his/her specific actions and what he/she stood for. Clearly explain
at least 2 similarities between your rebel and Antigone. You may use notecards for
your speech. Your speech will be timed. Speech: 25 points.

Some Helpful Dos and Do Nots
o CONTENT: Open with a question, or allegory, or comparison. Get
the audiences attention early, and reel them in. Make sure you
address the topic of your speech. Do not wander off into random
tangents. Be clear, concise, and use facts to support your stance.
Use elevated vocabulary & quotes. This adds authority to your
speech. A speech can be beautifully delivered, but worthless
without facts to support it.
o DELIVERY: Speak Loudly and Clearly. The first and most basic
rule of public speaking is to actually speak correctly! Be mindful
of your pace, and enunciate your words. Take your time. Relax; do
not let your nerves get the best of you. The audience actually has
to understand you. Do not just rush through your speech. A
speech is ineffective if the audience cannot even hear you. Do not
mumble your words.
o PRESENCE: Eye Contact- Look at your audience! You are
delivering the speech to them, after all. Eye contact shows that
you know what you are doing. Do not just read from your
paper/note cards the entire time.
o PRESENCE: Composure- Maintain yourself. The best thing you
can be when speaking publicly is confident. Do not slouch or keep
your hands in your pocket; this implies disinterest. If you make a
mistake, keep going. The only one who knows that you messed up
is you. If you move around when you speak, do not shuffle. Take
whole steps toward things. Actively engage yourself in the speech
if you are involved, the audience will be too! Capture their
attention, make them listen.
o Practice: Practice makes perfect. Do not just wing it and deliver
your speech on the spot. Practice what you are going to say
before hand so you will not make mistakes. If you are given a time
limit, practice your speech before hand to make sure you remain
within that limit.
