INTRODUCTION
This experiment was conducted to discover how a hypothesis is tested and evaluated.

HYPOTHESIS
Water is needed for seeds to germinate

MATERIALS
1. 3 radish seeds
2. 3 Lima bean seeds
3. 2 sponges
4. 2 Petri dishes
5. Wax marking

PROCEDURE
1. Place a wet sponge in one Petri dish with 3 radish seeds and 3 Lima bean
seeds. Wet the sponge and seal the Petri dish. Mark with a wax crayon on the dish
and label it experiment then place dish in a dark place.
2. Place a dry sponge with 3 radish seeds and 3 Lima bean seeds in a second
Petri dish. Label the dish control with a wax crayon and place the dish in a dark
place.
3. Place the dishes close together and keep all conditions except for moisture
exactly the same.
4. Monitor the seeds over the next few days and record how many seeds
germinate.

DATA

1
RESULTS

April 26-

Experiment: Cloth is soaked with three bean seeds and three radish seeds placed on top.
Radish seeds are light brown, the bean seeds are cream colored.

Control: Class is dry with three radish seeds and three bean seeds placed on top of the
sheet.

2
April 28-

Experiment: Cloth was dry so I re-soaked it in water and placed the container back in the
dark cubby. The seeds looked exactly the same with no signs of germination.

Control: Bean Seeds and radish seeds looked exactly the same with no signs of
termination.

3
May 2-

Experiment: The seeds have germinated and have began to sprout leaves. It looks like the
bean seeds are starting to grow mold. The mold looks white and fuzzy with tiny black
spots. The bean seeds are the only seeds that have germinated.

Control: The seats look exactly the same with no signs of germination.

5
May 4-

Experiment: The bean seeds continue to grow plants. The radish seeds still have not
germinated. One sprout detached itself from the bean seed and is now growing
independently. The mold is growing, spreading and getting more dense.

Control: All the seeds look exactly the same with no signs of germination.

6
7
May 8-

Experiment: The bean sprouts are still growing while the radish seeds still have not
germinated yet. The mold is spreading further and the black dots are more concentrated.

Control: All the seeds look exactly the same with no signs of germination.

8
9
May 10-

Experiment: One bean sprout has died while it appears that the two other bean sprouts
are trying to escape the mold. The bean sprout color is fading from green to brown. The
mold is so concentrated it is hard to see the bean seeds underneath it. The radish seeds
still have not germinated yet.

Control: All the seats look exactly the same with no signs of germination.

CONCLUSION
When water is added to seeds regularly the seeds begin to germinate over a couple of
days. After observing the experiment I observed, tested, improved through the
hypothesis that water is needed for seeds to germinate. I controlled the dish that had no
water in it by keeping the environment in the dish exactly the same throughout the
entire procedure. The variable was the experiment dish with water in it. I think it is
important to have only one variable because it is easier to manage, however having
multiple experimental variables would provide a more detailed solution. My
observations help prove the hypothesis to be true.

Evaluating my hypothesis is a good part of a scientific experiment because my

hypothesis is what started the experiment in the first place. The experiment was only
used to prove a scientific idea that I had to be true or false.
