Meets UC/CSU Fine Arts Requirement

Course description: Students will learn the elements of art which consist of the basic components
used by the artists when producing work of art. The elements are line, color, value, texture, space, shape
and form. The students will also learn the principles of art which refers the way that the elements of art
may be used in a work of art. The principles of art are unity, emphasis, rhythm, movement, balance,
pattern, contrast.
Lab Fee: There is an optional lab fee of $20 per semester. This lab fee must be paid during first quarter
so we can order supplies.
Purpose: This program is intended for highly motivated students interested in learning the basic
techniques of art. Students will learn and apply the elements and principles of design to produce creative
art projects that reflect their understanding of these concepts.
Daily Expectations: My expectations of students are that you use your class time wisely and work
on the project at hand.
Help each other.
Don't say bad things about people.
Respect others.
Respect personal property of others and of the school.
Do your best every day in everything.
No eating or drinking in the classroom except water.
Turn off cell phones & electronic devices.
Come to class ready to learn, this means take care of personal business before or after the class
(bathroom, drinks, etc)
If you miss class: Stop in and ask what you need to do, you may have to take work home or to study hall
to get caught up.
Philosophy:
A. Provide the opportunity to learn and understand the elements and principles of design.
B. Provide the opportunity to have hands-on projects.
C. Provide the opportunity to be free and creative
Grading: Your grade in art will come from the following:
Doing what is assigned and meeting the objectives of the project.
Your finished piece of work.
Originality of your work.
Being neat and careful.
Using your class time wisely.
Going above and beyond the project assigned (creativity) and using your ability to the fullest.
Grading Scale:
A+ 98-100 %
A 95-97%
A- 93-94%
B+ 90-92 %
B 87-89%
B- 85-86 %
C+ 82-84%
C 79-81%
C- 77-78 %
D+ 75-76%
D 72-74%
D- 70-71%
F 69% or below
