History and Analysis: We will study representative pieces from the Classical period. We will use both primary
and secondary sources to study the selected works in a historical context. We will focus on critical listening and
analysis to understand the arch-principles upon which the music of the Classical period is organized.

Policy
HOMEWORK: It is essential to attend each class prepared and to complete work in a timely manner.
Homework will be assigned and collected during most class meetings. Late work will not be accepted.
ATTENDANCE: This class consists of three 60 minute meetings per week. Two un-excused absences per
quarter will be allowed. Any unexcused absence beyond this will lower the students overall grade by one
half of one letter grade (5%).
CONFLICTS: This is a required core-curriculum course. All lessons, coachings, gigs, rehearsals, or any
other personal business such as vacations, etc., should not interfere with your attendance and participation.
They will not count as excused absences from classes and exams. Please plan accordingly.
DO NOT CHEAT: Academic fraud or dishonesty will be reported immediately to the Associate Dean.
Cases will be handled in accordance with the University codes of academic and student conduct.
BE ON TIME FOR CLASS: Class begins at 8:30. Coming in late disturbs the concentration of the
instructor and your fellow students. If you come in late or leave early you will be considered absent.
TURN OFF all cells phones, laptops, blackberries and other electronic media prior to coming to class.
Evaluation:
Exams 75% (instructor reserves the right to add exams and random pop quizzes)
