III. Introduction

This paper is about T.S Eliot a good well recognized poet that have made tons of poems.

A short biography and information of Eliots life and how he became the person he is and how he

earn that position. In this biography talks about what education and what jobs he had taken and

worked for. Also about a little about his life and marriage.

V. Biography

Thomas Stearns "T.S." Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888.

(Biography.com Editors) He study at Harvard University and graduated with a Bachelor of Art

degree. He was influenced by his professors in to poetry and literary. After a year serving at

Harvard for philosophy he left to France and the Sorbonne to study philosophy. (Biography.com

Editors) Eliot went back to Harvard during 1911 to 1914 and finish his advanced degree. But

Eliot did not have the chance to take the oral exam due to World War I. Later on Eliot got a job

as a teacher then in a bank as clerk in London, England that he held until 1925. Eliot got married

to a woman named Vivienne Haigh-Wood. Later on in life Eliot left is wife because of health

problems even though Eliot was going to be responsible for the asylum payments his wife was

denied he left her. Vivienne sent letters to Eliot denning the fact that he left her when Eliot had

moved on and years later got remarried to another woman that was his secretary and died in

2012. Eliot spend time doing poetry and did not get recognized for his poetry in till a guy name

Ezra Pound that help him publish his poems and they became lifelong friends. One of his first

books was Prufrock and Other Observations and it was published in 1917. (Modernism)

Immediately Eliot got established as a leading poet of the avant-garde. (Modernism) Also Eliot

was consider one of the most influential poet in the twentieth century because of his publication

of The Waste Land in 1922. (Modernism) Also his poem of The Wasted Land was made

during the time is wife and him were getting separated. In short time Eliot started get a reputation

and became one of the most successful poets at his time and a figure to some people also one of

the most respected person in poetry and reviews. For thirty years Eliot was one of the greatest

poets recognized for his work in poetry and literary criticism in the English-speaking world.

(Modernism) Eliot died of emphysema in January 4, 1965 in Kensington, London, United

Kingdom.

VI. Accomplishments

Eliot deeply committed to literature and completed his undergraduate degree in three

years instead of four. He won a scholarship to attend Merton College at Oxford and that

changed his life as it put him in the vicinity of London. (Biography) In London he met a man

named Ezra Pound, who he help Eliot to get contact with more people and got recognized. He

started off teaching for a year at Harvard then a schoolmaster into his career and took a job at

High Gate School where he taught French and Latin and also taught in the Royal Grammar

School. Later on switch up to bank clerk and during Eliot worked at the bank he continue to

write his book. To earn some extra money Eliot started to write reviews and lectured at evening

extension courses. (T.S Eliot) Eventually Eliot became a literary editor after publishing house of

Faber & Faber and later on became a director. (T.S. Eliot Biographical) During 1922-1939

Eliot edited the exclusive and influential literary journal criterion. (T.S. Eliot Biographical)

T.S. Eliot ranks with William Butler Yeats as the greatest English language poet of the 20th

Century and was certainly the most influential.(Biography)

VII. Summary

Eliot has been one of the most daring innovators of twentieth-century poetry. (T. S. Eliot

Biography.) In 1917 Eliots first book Prufrock and Observations was one of his first and great

achievements. He had begun write his poetry when he assisted in Harvard but when Eliot started

to get a reputation was when he his admiration towards Ezra Pound work and because of his

help. Soon after he was publishing his own quarterly literary journal Criterion which would

become one of the most acclaimed publications of the genre. (Eliot, T. S. "Biography of T. S.

Eliot.) Another poem that was famous and recognized was The Wasted Land after recovering

from his breakdown and separation of his first wife. The poem of The Wasted Land made a big

sensation in 1922 and translated and studied to the English language for twenty century. He also

was the voice of modernism in London. Eliot wrote his first play in 1935 named Murder in the

Cathedral. Another play that Eliot made was The Cocktail Party in 1949 and was the fourth

keep writing and making more poems and some plays and most recognized on his work in

poetry. Even though Eliot was unhappy with his first marriage he manage to get divorce and

married someone else. Even after his death Eliot in 1965 he was recipient of Noble Prize in 1928

Eliot had many awards and good well recognized poetry with honors that he made. His poetry

came more than just one thing but he made significant and very meaningful poetry that inspired

many other poets in his century.

VIII. Conclusion

Thomas Stearns Eliot was a good well recognized editor, director, writer, and literary

journal criterion. Eliot work was unique and different from the poetry from now because of his

modernism. Even though Eliot went through a breakdown he manage to better himself and keep

up with his poetry. He not only did his poetry good but with meaningful and strong words. Eliot

was one of the best and well recognized poets in his century; because his hard work Eliot got

chance to make the greats poems, edits and reviews that help many other poets.
