PROPOSAL OF A SMALL SCALE SK SAINT AIDAN DIGITAL LIBRARY

1.Introduction of the organization

Organization that we choose in this proposal is Sekolah Kebangsaan St. Aidan

(SKSA) in Negeri Sembilan. This school is about 59 years. The history of this school started
when the people of Bahau wanted an English medium school. Whereby the request to
government did not seem to meet with much response. A group of people in town therefore
got together and formed themselves into the committee-Bahau English School Fund
Committee and went about raising money so that they could build their own school.

In early January of 1958, Mr Lionel van Geyzel, a retired teacher agreed to be a

headmaster with started 140 children registered to enter into the school. There were only one
teacher that employed to teach for 2 classes at that time.

Today, the school known as National School St Aidan (M) or its acronym, SK St
Aidan (M). Now this school has bringing the total students population with different races of
450 people, 40 teachers and 3 staff.

There are three main block for classes and two block for administration. The library is
located in the administration building. The library was open from 1990 until today. The
library started with small collection of books, papers about the history of school and teaching
materials. Nowadays, the collection growing with a huge numbers. It contains a total
collection of more than 5,000 books, more than 50 titles of journals and magazines,
newspapers, examination papers, notes for UPSR subject and also Yearly Plan for the
teachers which needs to be digitized. The library building is designed to accommodate over
20,000 volumes of books and seats more than 200 readers. It includes main library,
administrative office, a study room, archive room, multimedia room, computer room and a
newspaper reading corner.

2. What is a Digital Library?

An informal definition of a digital library is a managed collection of information, with

associated services, where the information is stored in digital formats and accessible over a
network. Under this definition, the SKSA plan to build up a Digital Library with a mission to
digitize existed materials for the organizations collection. Other than that, the project of this
Digital Library aims at the production, maintenance, delivery, and preservation of a wide
range of high-quality digitized and networked resources for students, teachers, staff, school
alumni and parents of SK St Aidan.

2. Digital library vision and mission

The school library vision is to be a generator in the process of teaching and learning for the
school. The project of DL can be one of the mission to accomplish the SKSA Library vision
by digitize the documents that related to the collection materials of the school library.

According to Lesk, M. (2005) , there are many advantages of Digital library which are DL
can brings the library to the user , information can be shared more easily , easier to keep
information current and information is always available.

The documents are the four main subjects that related to UPSR Examination which are
Bahasa Melayu, Science ,English Language and Mathematics. These Digital object, we
choose from year 2012-2016.For each subjects we digitize for notes, Examination papers and
Yearly plan .
3.Digital library goals

-To preserve the materials that were subsential in UPSR examination.

-To document and archive the materials that important for teachers and students in their
lesson for daily day.

-To arrange the collection materials to be more systematic.

4.Digital Library significant

-The use of four main subjects:-put the references

1.UPSR subjects.

2.To give easy way to the teachers to find the teaching aids.

3.To help the pupils to do revision.

5.The technology used.

We are using the greenstone software in developing SKSA Digital Library.We choose
Greenstone because :-Related to the institution and make a comparison between dspace n
greenstone

-It is open source

-It can be use in multilingual-it has interface with many languages such as
English,france,Spanish and karzakh.

-The system use a standard Dublin core metadata .

-it can be published on the internet or in CD rom.

-It is easy to install without the expert.

6.Identify materials. framework the collection of the exam papers

-50 Notes in the format of PPT and PDF.example.

-50 Examination papers in the format of PDF.

-Yearly plan subject in word format.
