HIGH VOLTAGE TESTING TECHNOLOGY

(POWER SYSTEMS EMPHASIS ON HV ENGINEERING)

Time: 3 Hours Max Marks: 60

Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry EQUAL marks

1. (a) What are the sources of errors affecting the balance condition in a Schering bridge? Show
how these source errors are eliminated.

(b) The capacitance and dissipation factor of a bakelite sample were determined by using
circular electrodes and found to be 150 pF and 15 x 10 -4 respectively by Schering bridge
measurements. For the same electrode system the air capacitance was found to be 31 pF.
What is the complex permittivity of the sample?

2. (a) What is the need of testing standards? Explain various testing standards available for
porcelain/glass insulators.

(b) Explain the types of tests specified for cap and pin of Porcelain and Glass insulators.

3. (a) Explain the partial discharge tests on high voltage cables. How is a fault in the insulation
located by using this test?

(b) What are the different power frequency and impulse tests done on insulators? Mention the
procedure for testing.

4. (a) What are the different types of contaminants? How these are affecting the performance of
insulators? Classify the contamination based on the severity.

(b) Discuss about the artificial contamination test on high voltage insulators.

5. Explain the method of impulse testing of high voltage transformers. What is the procedure
adopted for locating the failure.

6. (a) Derive an expression for discharge magnitude and discharge energy due to a single
discharge in a void present in an insulating medium.

(b) A specimen of solid insulating material 1 cm thickness has a cylindrical air void 0.5 cm
thick. Calculate the voltage to be applied to the specimen to start discharge in the void, given
that the dielectric constant of the material is 4. Also calculate the ratio between the apparent
and actual charges.

7. Explain, with neat schematic diagrams, the measurement of radio interference in the fields
and laboratories.

8. (a) Discuss about the various types of cleaning methods of insulators to remove the
contaminations on the insulator surfaces.

(b) Compare and contrast between mobile protective coating and solid water repellent coating.
