Think Tank Discussion

Importance of Education to Us
Education is crucial to success!!
Local Impact
By the US Census, 18% of Austin residents live below the poverty line.

AISD claims that 52% of students are economically disadvantaged.

AISD estimated that 28% of enrollment was not English proficient in 2012.

Students that struggle financially have difficulty succeeding in school.

Books help Reading, Reading helps Learning.

Global Impact
According to UNESCO, as of 2010, 61 million primary school age children were not
enrolled in school.
According to UNICEF, 1 in 4 children of secondary school age will actually attend a
secondary school.
There are about 200 countries and most of them have very little school or its
optional. Because of this, if you have a 6th grade education youre probably doing
pretty well.
Another study done by UNESCO showed that, 774 million adults, 64% of whom are
women, still lack basic reading and writing skills.
