Students will learn that . . .
1. Many different ethnic groups and religions influence the culture of Indias neighbors.
2. Rapid population growth, ethnic conflicts, and environmental threats are major challenges to the
region today.
TEKS: (3) Geography. The student uses geographic tools to answer geographic
questions. The student is expected to: (C) compare various world regions and
countries using data from geographic tools, including maps, graphs, charts,
databases, and models
(6) Geography. The student understands that geographical patterns result from
physical environmental processes. The student is expected to: (C) analyze the
effects of the interaction of physical processes and the environment on humans.
Materials: Power point, youtube, handouts, journals, youtube, pencils, white
construction paper, stickers,
Teaching Procedure: (introduction)
1. Motivation:

Image with Mr. Rogers Neighborhood song.


2. Prior Learning: Intro to India, Map of India, What is Hinduism, India Vocabulary,
Gandhi, Gallery walk.
3. Statement of Objective: Today and tomorrow (Wednesday and Thursday) you
will be learning about the countries that surround India.
4. Purpose (statement/question): You need to know this information because it
will be on your test, and because despite the cultural differences, the countries that
border India share similar challenges.
5. Instructional Steps: (outlined in more detail in ppt)
Wednesday: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal
Thursday: Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Review.
While students work on bell work, take attendance and get papers ready to
pass out, get ready for class. Review bell work quickly as a class then move on to
motivation. *remind students that they might not know the answers to these
questions, they should still do their best! This will give them a taste of what todays
lesson will cover. Bell work:

Pass out handout for students to complete as we go through the power point.
On Wednesday we will cover Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. On Thursday we will
cover Bhutan, Sri Lanka and do a review of all the countries that neighbor India.
Throughout the lesson there are video links. Notes for the slides follow the guided
reading.

At the end of each section (country) use popsicle sticks to ask questions like this:

What is one thing you learned about __________?


If you were the leader of ______________ what would you do to fix _________
challenges?
In your groups come up with a way to remember all the countries that border India.
What challenges might a Sherpa living in the Himalayas face?
What similarities do you notice between Nepal and Bhutan?

Pass out handouts, go through power point, students will get the answers from what
is said! Videos will happen as we move through the power point, then conclude each
day with a true false review.

Future Learning:
Wednesday: Tomorrow we will be learning about the rest of Indias neighbors (Sri
Lanka, & Bhutan.) and reviewing the similarities and differences between all 5
countries with each other and with India.
Wednesday and Thursday: This information is important because the Indian
Subcontinent plays a major role in technology industries which directly relate and
affect you (cell phones, many customer services are operated in this area). It is also
important because this region of the world Is home to many billions of people!
