The Orkney Islands
The Orkneys are a group of seventy islands in the far north of Scotland. Almost all of
the population of 20,000 people live on the most important island, Mainland. Many of
the others are completely uninhabited, where only wild animals and sea birds live. In
fact, the islands are an amazing nature reserve, and it is even possible to see killer
whales if you go at the right time.
Because they are so remote and only a few people live there, the Orkneys have
preserved lots of ancient buildings, which are very important for historians.
People have lived on the Orkneys since the Stone Age, and many of the ruins come
from that time. One example is the Knap of Howar, which is the oldest home in the UK.
There are many other ruins too, like the standing stones in the Ring of Brodgar. These
are older than the Egyptian pyramids, and there are many legends about them. Once,
people thought that the stones walked on New Year's Eve a very frightening
experience!
There are more modern buildings too, like the twelfth century St Magnus Cathedral.
This is one of the most popular places to visit. If you're thinking of a trip to this
mysterious ancient land, don't forget to pack lots of jumpers in your suitcase. It can be
freezing on the islands all through the year!

Julie's Blog: Mexico!
I'm just back from a month in Mexico with my parents. I had a terrific time it's an
amazing country! It's also enormous. I never realised that before I visited it!
We went all over the country. The longest trip we did was by train from Chihuahua to
Al Pacifico. It goes for 670 kilometres and it takes 13 hours! That was fun though
because we met some Dutch girls and we played cards. We're now friends on Facebook!
Later, we went to the mountains in the north of the country. It was absolutely freezing! I
didn't pack the right clothes before I left England, so I had to buy a new jacket. It's great
though, and I'm looking forward to wearing it at home.
My favourite part of the trip was Baja California. We went to the coast to go surfing and
to go whale watching. My mum and I were delighted when we did that. I've wanted to
go whale watching since I was little, so it was a dream to see them in real life. We took
a lot of photos that day.
Then, the final part was our journey home. Dad drove to the USA and we got a plane
from San Diego, but we were in the car for hours and I was absolutely exhausted by the
time we got to the airport. But what a trip! I've never had such a great experience in my
whole life!
