OVERVIEW: This resource will assist teachers in planning and implementing math talks that

demonstrate extensive knowledge and pedagogical strategies suitable to the mathematical

practice of data fluency.

Creating Data Fluent Students

To demonstrate knowledge of the math content standards and mathematical practices
Objective: across grade levels by creating daily math talks suitable to student learning. These math
talks will utilize data/graphs appropriately and challenge students to build data fluency.

Creating Data Fluent Students
Why it is important to use data during math talks:
Measurement and data is a mathematical practice found in all
grade levels, in varying aspects and applications. Also, teaching
students to be able to master reading and analyzing data helps
them prepare and succeed on the NWEA. This strand is present
on the NWEA assessment for all grade levels. Graphing and
data is also a great way to give visual learners a tool to help
them succeed in their preferred learning style while learning
how to use appropriate tools strategically.

How to incorporate data: The teacher creates a weekly

graph that students can glue into their math journals to have
and use for reference for the daily math
talks/questions/assessment.

1. Introduce the data graph and have students read it in

large/small groups and discuss what each data point
means (see example).
2. Create daily questions that encourage the students to
continue to plot the data and analyze to see if there are
patterns or trends within the data (see examples).
3. Weekly assessment can be based off the data graph and
the data they plotted.
4. Graphs and questions can be easily differentiated based
on students needs and levels.
Example Questions:

How many red pencils will be sold in week 9?

How many times more did pink pencils sell in week 4 than red pencils?
Which color pencil made the most money in week 7?
Which color pencil made the least amount of money in week 8?
