Seventh Sunday of Easter
We move into the final week of the liturgical season of Easter. Next Sunday we celebrate Pentecost.
Monday is Memorial Day. We remember those who have died while serving their country. May they
rest in peace, and may we always remember them and be grateful for their service. The Shrine will have
a holiday schedule on Monday, with Mass at only 8am and 10am. The Shrine closes at 11am that day.
Next month we will celebrate the first anniversary of the Shrines Veterans Ministry. We are grateful to
everyone who has helped us with this ongoing successful project. The second collection Memorial Day
weekend is for the Veterans Ministry.
The Shrine is grateful to the Cummings Foundation and its $100,000 grant to enable us to buy new
equipment for the Franciscan Food Center. This week we used $30,000 of that money to install a new
walk-in cooler. This will enable us to distribute more fruits and vegetables to the poor. Our thanks to
everyone who has worked on this new cooler project: Debby Hawes, Mary Ann Ponti, Maryanne
Rooney-Hegan, Bob Barry, David Crocini, and Kevin Sheehan.
We welcome our two new summer interns, Kathryn Chaney and Anna Lenney. Kathryn is going into
her senior year at Boston College and Anna is going into her junior year at Holy Cross. A Jesuit
education with a summer internship with the Franciscans: Whats better than that? Kathryn will work on
communications and fundraising and Anna will work on outreach programs and will help Joanne Hidaka
on liturgical design.
Wednesday is the feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The image of Elizabeth and Mary in
conversation has inspired much great religious art. The statue in the first-floor church of the expectant
Virgin Mary continues to be popular with visitors to the Shrine.
Have a blessed week.
Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM
Executive Director

Juan Diego Areiza, known by all of us friars and staff of the Shrine as Diego, died unexpectedly on
Saturday, May 20. The friars had a Funeral Mass for him at the Shrine on Friday, May 26.

Diegos company, M&D Cleaning Corporation, has the main janitorial services contract with the Shrine.
Diego was both savvy and hard-working in business. He was quick to quietly use his money to help other
people in need.

Diego was always wonderful around the Shrine in many quiet ways. He would help infirmed friars. He was
especially kind to Fr. Phil OShea over the years, helping him with his daily routine. He would come into the
Shrine in the middle of the night in January, shoveling the sidewalk outside, and generally making sure that
everything was ready for a 5:30am opening. He very humbly and tirelessly did the unglamorous work of
cleaning bathrooms and moving garbage. Despite doing this kind of work, he always maintained a very
pleasant demeanor and always adapted to the other persons (sometimes last-minute) request. Whenever
there was a crisis at the Shrine, the situation would be made better by getting Diego involved.

Diego also served as a trusted friend to many. He spoke to the young and the old, the English-speaking and
the Spanish-speaking. People felt confident sharing their struggles with him. Diego understood human frailty
and genuinely cared about people. One of Diegos struggles was that so many people had discovered the gift
of his friendship.

Diego was not a Franciscan himself, but certainly understood and lived many aspects of Franciscan life. This
has been a genuinely sad week at the Shrine, as friars and staff mourn his passing.

Diego was born on feast of St. John the Evangelist, December 27, 1962. He died on
the feast of the Franciscan St. Bernadine of Siena, May 20, 2017.

Diego is survived by his wife Luzmila, his son Steven, his stepdaughter Johana, as
well as many family members back in his home country of Columbia.

We extend our condolences to his family. May Diego rest in peace!
