Abstract

We studied specimens of the perlid genus Anacroneuria collected at the Ecological Station, Wenceslau Guimares, State
of Bahia, Brazil. A list of Anacroneuria species is provided including a description of a new species, A. patioba n. sp.,
and a new record is given for A. paprockii Novaes & Bispo, 2014.

Keywords: Aquatic insects, Stoneflies, Neotropical Region, Atlantic forest, Streams

Introduction

There are seven stoneflies genera recorded from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest including Gripopteryx Pictet 1841,
Guaranyperla Froehlich 2001, Paragripopteryx Enderlein 1909, Tupiperla Froehlich 1969 (Gripopterygidae),
Anacroneuria Klaplek, 1909, Kempnyia Klaplek, 1914, and Macrogynoplax Enderlein 1909 (Perlidae). Among
these genera, 20 species are recorded from the State of Bahia, Brazil (Duarte & Lecci, 2016). These stonefly
species are associated with streams of lowland and mountains regions of the Atlantic Forest, but also in streams of
the Caatinga biome (Lecci et al., 2014).
Anacroneuria is the most diverse genus among the Anacroneuriini (Stark et al., 2009; Froehlich, 2012). It
occurs from the southwestern United States to northern Argentina (Stark, 2001; Stark et al., 2009). Currently, there
are about 80 species recorded from Brazil, nine are known from northeastern Brazilian (Righi-Cavallaro et al.,
2013; Duarte & Lecci, 2016).

Material and methods

Study area. The Ecological Station at Wenceslau Guimares (S1341', W3928', approximately 2,400 ha.) is a
Conservation Unit located within the municipality of Wenceslau Guimares in the middle region of southern Bahia
(Fig. 1). This area is covered by Atlantic Forest vegetation and has an altitudinal range between 500 to 1,000 m
a.s.l. This area is included in the hydrographic basin of South Recncavo River (subbasin of the Almas River)
(Bahia 2010). We describe a new species of Anacroneuria and provide an additional new record for another species
of the genus from northeastern Brazil.
Sampling. All specimens listed were collected along streams and waterfalls using light traps and U.V. light
pan traps. All material examined is preserved in 80% ethanol. Illustrations were prepared with a camera Lucida and
edited using Adobe Illustrator CS6 editor. Some structures were photographed using a Leica M205A
stereomicroscope. Most of the specimens including the holotype of the new species are deposited in the Museum of
Zoology, University of So Paulo, State of So Paulo, Brazil (MZSP). Paratypes were also deposited in the
Museum of Zoology, Federal University of Bahia, State of Bahia, Brazil (UFBA). We present the species in
alphabetical order.

Results and discussion

Four species of Anacroneuria were collected at EEEWG including a new species, A. patioba n. sp., and a new
record is listed for A. paprockii from northeastern Brazil (Table 1). Currently, there are eleven species of
Anacroneuria recorded on the range of BA. The species are discussed below.

Morphometric data. Male (n= 8), forewing length, 10,511,5 mm (mean standard deviation (s)= 0,46).
Remarks. This species is widely distributed from northeast Argentina (MIS and ER) and Paraguay to
northeastern Brazil (Duarte & Lecci, 2016). The penial armature of the specimens studied differ slightly from the
holotype illustration (Zwick, 1972) and the figures of Novaes & Bispo (2014a) and Bispo et al. (2014). However, it
agrees with the redescription of Baldin et al. (2013). This suggests a need to study A. debilis in a phylogeographical
perspective. A teneral specimen is pale brownish in general color, a square pronotum (trapezoidal in non-teneral
specimens) (Figs. 2A-B), remnants of gills present on thoracic segments, and milky wings.

Morphometric data. Male (n= 1), forewing length, 8,5 mm.
Remarks. This species is known from the municipalities of Amargosa and Andara (BA), and now from
Wenceslau Guimares. The examined specimen agrees well with the description of Righi-Cavallaro et al. (2013),
however the head does not exhibit the pattern of spots exactly as illustrated by these authors. In our specimen, the
head has a conspicuous M-line with the central frons dark (Fig. 2C).

Morphometric data. Male (n= 18), forewing length, 1112,5 mm (s= 0,48).
Remarks. Novaes & Bispo (2014a) described the species from State Park of Rio Preto (MG). The head agrees
with description in Novaes & Bispo (2014a) (Fig. 3A). However the penial armature has an acute apex in lateral
view (Fig. 3E). We observed some variations in the configuration of the hooks (Fig. 3C) and the hammer is thin and
long (Fig. 3B). Despite the variations, we have determined these specimens as A. paprockii, and we present the first
records of the species from northeastern Brazil.

Anacroneuria patioba n. sp.

(Figs. 4AF)

Type material. Holotype, male: BR, BA: EEEWG, Riacho Patioba, S1334'50'', W3942'17'', 09.x.2010, light pan
trap, AC et al. col. Paratypes: same data as holotype, 4 males.
Description. A small sized species. Holotype, male: forewing length, 11,5 mm. Paratypes, males (n= 4):
forewing length, 1111.5 mm (s= 0.27). General color pale yellowish. Head and pronotum yellowish; head with
inconspicuous M-line, central frons area yellowish, clypeus and occiput pale yellowish (Fig. 4A), darker in teneral
specimens (Fig. 4B). Antennae ochraceous, scape with dark spot laterally. Palpi pale yellowish. Pronotum with two
dark strips laterally, anterior corners rounded, posterior corners rounded (Fig. 4A). Membrane and veins of wings
conspicuous. Legs pale yellowish with dark strip in distal part of the femur. Cerci ochraceous. Sternum IX with
small bristles on posterior area. Hammer simple, truncate cone (Fig. 4C). Penial armature (Figs. 4D, E, F) with pair
of large distal vesicles. In lateral view, terminal tube slightly raised, distal region curved, a pair of latero-inferior
lobes (Fig. 4D). In dorsal view, terminal tube short, with narrow base (Fig. 4F). Hooks regularly curved and acute
apically.
Female and nymph. Unknown.
Remarks. The penial armature of A. patioba resembles that of A. cathia Froehlich, 2002, however the new
species has a shorter aedeagal apex and obliquely shaped shoulders (Fig. 4D-F). The aedeagus of A. cathia has the
apex longer and the shoulders are not obliquely shaped. Additionally, the color patterns are different, pale
yellowish in A. patioba, and light-medium brown in A. cathia (Froehlich, 2002). We collected a teneral specimen
with remants of gills in thoracic segments, milky wings, and a dark head.
