Documentation for Julia Ann Drysdale

(Jan 27, 1814 to Apr 10, 1856)
mother of Chesterfield Worth
(1850 to 1892)
Julia Ann Drysdale was born January 27, 1814, in Kentucky.(1) Her parents
probably were John Drysdale and Martha McGlaughlin, who were married February
15, 1809, in Montgomery County, Kentucky.(2)
Census records and other material obtained from limited research into the matter
indicate the possibility that a James, John, and Mary "Polly" Drysdale might be brothers
and sisters.(3) A John Drysdale and James Drysdale witnessed a will on March 29, 1816,
for Henry Boyals of Campbell County, Kentucky, wife's name was Martha.(4)
The 1830 census records for John Drysdale and his presumed brother, James
Drysdale, indicate that only John Drysdale had any children living with him and his
wife, Martha McLaughlin, in 1830.(5) It seems probable therefore that Julia Ann
Drysdale was a daughter of John Drysdale and his wife Martha McLaughlin.
Additional information on the Drysdales indicate that a Rachael Ann Drysdale,
born Sept. 29, 1820, in Campbell County, Kentucky, probably was a sister or cousin to
Julia Ann Drysdale. Rachael married Sandford David Turner in Rushville, Indiana, on
February 15, 1838.(6)
Two Internet surname forums indicated a connection between a Collins and a
Drysdale. One source indicated a Martha Drysdale married James Collins on January
14, 1850, while a second source indicated a Huey Drysdale, who was born in Kentucky
and who moved to Indiana, married a Mandy J. Collins. Both sources appeared to make
a connection to the Drysdale ancestors of Julia Ann Drysdale and possibly identify two
other cousins or siblings of Julia Ann Drysdale. However, no marriage records for either
couple have been found in Indiana or Kentucky.(7)
Undocumented information received by Curtis Older indicated, "I, too, am
looking for Drysdales in Rush Co. I have 3 Drysdale sisters who married in Rush Co.
Rachel married Sanford Turner-15 Feb 1838, Julia married John Worth-5 June 1837, and
Martha married James Collins-14 Jan 1850. They were the daughters of John & Martha
McGlaughlin Drysdale, who were married 15 Feb 1809 in Montgomery Co, KY."(8)
Census and other information obtained on a William Drysdale indicates that he
probably was a brother or cousin of Julia Ann Drysdale. William Drysdale was born in
Kentucky, August 28, 1815, and died April 7, 1898, age 82 years, 8 months. He was
buried at the Morris Cemetery located 3 miles north of Adrian, Missouri.(9) William
Drysdale married Elizabeth Earnest March 23, 1837, in Rush County, Indiana, however,
no marriage record or license has been found for this couple via the Internet. Elizabeth
was the daughter of Henry F. Earnest and Hannah Bitner. She was born in Sevier
County, Tennessee on June 10, 1820. She died November 11, 1879, in Bates County,
Missouri, at age 58.(10) William Drysdale indicated in the 1880 U. S. Census for
Missouri that his father's birthplace was Virginia and that his mother's birthplace was
Kentucky.
William Drysdale and Elizabeth Earnest were the parents of twelve children,
including: 1) John N. Drysdale, born May 29, 1841, died August 23, 1895, married Mary
Jane Allender; 2) Henry Drysdale, born 1839, died 1907, married Mary E. Davis, wed
1863; and 3) James, born April 28, 1843, Rush County, Indiana, died March 12, 1909,
Bates County, Missouri. James Drysdale married Mary Strain. Many of the William and
Elizabeth Drysdale children and their spouses are buried in Morris Cemetery, Bates
County, Missouri, and others are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Bates County,
Missouri.(11)
William Drysdale and family lived next to John Worth according to the 1840
Daviess County, Indiana, census, and John Drysdale and family lived very close to John
Worth as well.(12)Additional research and data is needed to determine conclusive
answers as to the identity of the ancestors and brothers and sisters of Julia Ann
Drysdale.
Julia Ann Drysdale married John Worth in Rush County, Indiana, on June 5,
1837.(13) John Worth was born in North Carolina about 1817.(14) He was a son of
Charles Worth and Elizabeth Frye.(15)
The first marriage of John Worth was to an Elizabeth Hyatt, as recorded in the
William C. Folger Manuscript.(16) The Folger Manuscript of three volumes is known as
Genealogical Records of Nantucket Families. Folger recorded many of the Nantucket
families that moved from Nantucket, Massachusetts to North Carolina in the late 1700s.
Charles Worth, the father of John Worth, was born on Nantucket Island in 1761 and
moved with his parents, Joseph and Judith (Starbuck) Worth Jr., and his brothers and
sisters to New Garden, North Carolina, about 1775. New Garden became the present
site of Guilford College on the west side of Greensboro, North Carolina. Charles
married Elizabeth Frye of Stokes County, North Carolina, probably in 1799.(17) The
listing of the Charles Worth family in the Folger Manuscript gives the name of the wife
of John Worth as Elizabeth Hyatt.
No marriage record for John Worth and Elizabeth Hyatt has been found.
However, support for the marriage does appear to exist in two census records. Evidence
that John Worth was the father of a child, before his marriage to Julia Ann Drysdale,
appears in census records for 1840 and 1850. The 1840 U. S. Census of Indiana, Daviess
County, lists one female child, age 5 and under 10 living in the John Worth
household.(18) This child must have been born by 1835, prior to his marriage to Julia
Ann Drysdale in June 1837. This female child is not listed in the John Worth household
in the 1850 Indiana census and perhaps she died, or married, before the census was
taken.(19)
Additional information from the 1850 U. S. Census of Indiana, Rush County,
Jackson Township, household of John Worth, appears to support a connection between
John Worth and a Hyatt, or Hiatt, family. The Folger Manuscript spelled the last name of
the wife of John Worth as Hyatt. The 1850 Indiana census lists a Mary Hiatt, age 60,
living in the John Worth household.(20) It seems reasonable to assume that the Folger
Manuscript and the 1850 Indiana census for Rush County contained two viable ways to
spell the last name of John Worth's first wife. Folger used Hyatt while the 1850 census
used Hiatt. The Mary Hiatt of the John Worth household in 1850 could have been the
mother of Elizabeth Hiatt, John Worth's first wife, according to Folger.
Some might contend that the Mary Hiatt living in the 1850 household of John
Worth, was the mother of Julia Ann Drysdale. That she remarried after the death of her
Drysdale husband and that her second spouse, named Hiatt, also died before 1850.
There appears to be significant, but incomplete evidence, to indicate the preceding was
not the case. There is evidence the parents of Julia Ann Drysdale were John Drysdale
and Martha McLaughlin.
The 1850 census records a Martha Drysdale living with a Susannah Underwood
and Robert Underwood in Daviess County, Indiana.(21) Susannah Underwood
probably was a daughter of Martha (McLaughlin) Drysdale and John Drysdale. A
Susannah Drasdale married Robert Underwood on February 10, 1849, in Daviess
County, Indiana.(22) The John Drysdale household living in Daviess County, Indiana,
near to John Worth in 1840 certainly appear to have been John Drysdale and the former
Martha McLauglin who married in Kentucky in 1809. Susannah (Drasdale) Underwood
appears to have been another sister of Julia Ann Drysdale. The preceding discussion
certainly indicates the mother of Julia Ann Drysdale was named Martha, not Mary.
Evidence also exists that Allen and Mary "Polly" (Drysdale) Hiatt could have
been the parents of an Elizabeth Hiatt. Census records appear to support a conclusion
that John Drysdale, father of Julia Ann Drysdale, was a brother of Mary "Polly"
Drysdale, who could have been the mother of an Elizabeth Hiatt. All of these
individuals can be closely connected, or an association shown to exist between them,
through census records and marriage records. Queries by various parties on Internet
genealogy forums also appear to support the Drysdale and Hiatt relationship.
According to the 1850 census record, Mary Hiatt owned the land on which the
John Worth household lived.(23) A Campbell County, Kentucky, marriage record was
found for an Allen Hiatt and Polly Drysdale. The marriage date was May 3, 1817.(24)
Also found was a genealogy listing that gave the name of the spouse of Allen Hiatt as
Mary "Polly" Drysdale. A daughter of this Allen and Mary (Drysdale) Hiatt might have
been born about 1817 or 1818 and could have married John Worth in 1834 or 1835. Allen
Hiatt was born about 1797 in Pennsylvania. His parents were William and Elizabeth
"Betsy" (Thatcher) Hiatt.(25)
An 1820 census record for Allen Hiatt exists for the state of Kentucky, Fleming
County, no township stated.(26) The 1820 census indicates Allen Hiatt and Mary
(Drysdale) Hiatt had two daughters and one son who were under 10 years old. Since
they were married in May 1817, they likely had one child in 1817 or early 1818. This
child could have been named Elizabeth Hiatt.
An 1830 census record exits for an Allen Hiatt household in Rush County,
Indiana.(27) The 1830 census indicates one female of 10 years and under 15. This child
could have been Elizabeth Hiatt who would have turn 18 or thereabouts in 1835. The
1830 census indicates that Allen and Mary Hiatt were in Rush County by 1830. It
appears the Drysdale and Worth families did not arrive in Rush County until a few
years later.
The 1840 Indiana census for Davies County lists Allen Hyatt as living near to
John Drysdale as well as near Sandford Turner, William Drysdale, Seth Worth, David
German, and John Worth.(28) The 1840 census uses the Hyatt spelling. Hence, Hiatt and
Hyatt do seem to be used interchangeably in the census records for this family. The
1840 census indicates Allen Hiatt was age 40 and under 50 and that Mary Drysdale
Hiatt was age 50 and under 60.
There is no 1850 census record for the Allen and Mary Hiatt household. It
appears that Allen Hiatt, or Hyatt, husband of Mary, died before the 1850 census was
taken. The 1850 John Worth census in Rush County, Indiana, indicates Mary Hiatt was
60 years old at that time.(29)
Additional information obtained on the Internet indicate that William Hiatt, born
about 1777, married Elizabeth "Betsy" Thatcher, who was born about 1781. William and
Elizabeth Hiatt came from Pennsylvania to Ohio and on to Kentucky William and
Elizabeth Hiatt moved to Ohio about 1808. They then moved on to Kentucky, being in
Mason, Fleming, and other counties in Kentucky.(30)
William and Elizabeth (Thatcher) Hiatt were the parents of the following
children, and perhaps others who are unknown:
1) Allen, born in 1797, married Mary"Polly" Drysdale May 3, 1817, in Campbell
County, Kentucky
2) Stephen, born 1798, married Lucy Morris, December 6, 1817, in Campbell
County, Kentucky
3) Thatcher, born 1799, married Esther/Hester Hunt, Green, Markwell, in 1820,
in Kentucky
4) Nancy, born 1803, married 1st Landon Bonham; married 2nd John Pemberton
5) Sarah/Sallie, born 1805, married Jeremiah Rice, March 24, 1824, in Greenup
County, Kentucky
6) Elizabeth "Betsy", born 1807, married July 16, 1830
It seems entirely possible that Allen Hiatt and his wife, Mary Drysdale, named their
first female child Elizabeth after Allen's mother, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Thatcher) Hiatt.
Additional research or data is needed to determine a conclusive answer to the Elizabeth
Hyatt issue.
As previously indicated, John Worth and Julia Ann (Drysdale) Worth and their
children lived in Daviess County, Indiana, in 1840, as did a number of individuals
related to them.(31) Sanford Turner, husband of Rachel Drysdale, appears in the 1840
Daviess County, Indiana, census.(32) David German, a brother-in-law of John Worth,
lived next to Sanford Turner in 1840.(33) Mary Polly Drysdale and her husband, Allen
Hyatt, lived in Davies County in 1840.(34). John Drysdale appears in the 1840 Daviess
County, Indiana, census as living very near Allen Hyatt.(35) William Drysdale,
probably a brother of Julia Ann Drysdale, lived next to John Worth in 1840.(36)
The children of John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale listed in the 1850 Indiana
census for Rush County, Jackson Township, were: Seth, James, John C., Mary J.,
Elizabeth, and Chesterfield D. Worth.(37) In 1854, John Worth and his family lived in
Shelby County, Indiana.(38) Julia Ann Drysdale died April 10, 1856.(39A) She was
buried in the Old Boggstown Cemetery, Shelby County, Indiana.
John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale may have been the parents of children who
were born between the time of the 1850 Indiana census and the date of death for Julia
Ann in April 1856. The 1860 Indiana census records for the family of John Worth
include 1) children from his marriage to Julia Ann Drysdale, 2) children by his marriage
to his third wife, Mary Jane (Lemon) Stephens, whom he married on January 1, 1857, in
Shelby County, Indiana, and 3) children from the prior marriage of Mary Jane Lemon to
? Stephens.(39B).
Mary Jane Lemon was born October 10, 1824 at Akron, Ohio, and died October
22, 1913, in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.(40) and was buried at Battle
Ground, Tippicanoe County, Indiana. The John and Mary Jane Worth family lived in
Hendricks and Montgomery counties in 1860.(41) The John Worth family lived in
Montgomery County, Indiana, in 1870.(42) John Worth died sometime after February 1,
1886.(43) No date of death, location of death, location of burial, will, or estate papers
have been found for him.

15. The English ancestry of the Worth family is presented in A Genealogical History of the
Clark and Worth Families by Carol Clark Johnson. A caveat on the latter source is its
sporadic documentation and its reliance upon heralds' visitations. An unpublished, but
important source of Worth family information is the William C. Folger records of
Nantucket Island, Massachusetts families in possession of the Nantucket Historical
Association. Consisting of three large handwritten ledgers, the Folger collection is
criticized for its inaccuracies and total lack of documentation, however, the very age of
this effort, which began before the Civil War, gives it its own value as evidence. See

I, too, am looking for Drysdales in Rush Co. I have 3 Drysdale sisters who married in
Rush Co. Rachel married Sanford Turner-15 Feb 1838, Julia married John Worth-5 June
1837, and Martha married James Collins-14 Jan 1850. They were the daughters of John &
Martha McGlaughlin Drysdale, who were married 15 Feb 1809 in Montgomery Co, KY.
Susan Lederer

William T. Hiatt who married Levina Hedges was [we think and are trying to prove] a
son of Thatcher Hiatt and Esther HUNT, GREEN, MARKWELL HIATT.

We are almost sure Thatchers name is also William Thatcher but so far have no proof
even tho some researchers have added the names together without documentation.

William T. Hiatt b. 11 Feb. 1821 had only one brother and his name was Josiah Hiatt.b.
ca. 1824.

Thatcher Hiatt who married Esther HUNT, GREEN , MARKWELL was the son of
WILLIAM Hiatt b. ca. 1777 PA? and Elizabeth "Betsy" THATCHER.
They moved to OH then back to KY finally settling in Greenup Co. KY for a time.
There was one daughter of William and Betsy named Sallie but she was born ca. 1805
and Married Jeremiah RICE 24 March, 1824 in Greenup Co. KY.
It is entirely possible this Sarah Hiatt/Hyatt is one of the daughters of one of Williams.
b. ca. 1777 sons.
He had one named Allen b. ca. 1797 and married Mary "Polly" Drysdale. This Allen
was in Fleming Co. early taxes ca. 1820.
son named Stephen b. 1801 married Lucy Morris and a son named John b. 1809 married
Mahala Brammer 16 July, 1830.
It seems most likely none of these could be your Sarah's parents tho.

I am a descendent of JOSIAH HIATT.

am sorry but I have no idea who the children of Jesse Griffith and Elizabeth "Betsy"
Hiatt was. I just know they were married in Greenup Co. KY 21 August, 1827.
One of Elizabeth's sisters married a Jeremiah RICE in Greenup Co. KY., on 24 March,
1824. I noticed there were some families of Griffith that had young children named
RICE living with them like perhaps they were bound out.
I know that the HIATT family should be in whatever county would be Greenup Co in
1820-30-40. What county would that be? I am not familiar with the boundary lines and
when they changed. What census would I have to look at for that time period?
My Hiatt family came from PA, NC, VA to OH in 1808-10. They stayed in OH and
moved several times ending up at Cincinnati OH and crossed into Campbell County ca.
1817 where two of the children married.
Allen HIATT b. ca. 1797 m. Mary "Polly" DRYSDALE 3 May 1817
Stephen HIATT b. ca. 1798 m. Lucy MORRIS 6 Dec. 1817
Nancy HIATT b. ca. 1803 m. Landon BONHAM 3 August 1818
Then the family moved on to Greenup County ca. 1820-27 as that is when the others
married.
Sallie/Sarah HIATT b. ca. 1805 m. Jeremiah RICE 24 March, 1824
Elizabeth "Betsy" HIATT b. ca. 1807 m, Jesse Griffith 21 Aug. 1827
John HIATT b. c. 1809 m. Mahala BRAMMER 16 July, 1830
All the last 3 marriages occuring in Greenup Co. KY.
Sometime about 1840-41 Stephen HIATT, and I am not sure how many more of the
family, Started for the Platt Purchase.
I would love to find where the family was durig this time and perhaps find out
something about their migration.
Thanks for answering me altho I am not sure where else to look for Jesse and Elizabeths
children???

Julia Ann Worth tombstone in the old cemetery,
Boggstown, Shelby County, Indiana

The cemetery was vandalized sometime before I got there on

August 26, 2000. Boggstown is southeast of Indianapolis towards
Shelbyville, Indiana. It lies between Interstate highways 74 and 65. The
old cemetery in Boggstown is out in a field and off the nearest highway
by about a quarter of a mile. There is now a "new" cemetery in
Boggstown which is not the same one as this "old cemetery". Boggstown
is in Shelby County, Indiana.
Rush County, Indiana, where John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale
were married, lies directly east of Shelby County. Shelbyville and
Rushville, the respective county seats of Shelby and Rush counties, are
about 20 miles from each other.
John Worth was a wagon maker according to the 1850 Indiana
Census. In the 1860 Indiana Census, where the family of John Worth
appears in the records for both Hendricks and Montgomery counties.
Hendricks county is directly west of Marion county. Marion county
consists of Indianapolis, Indiana. Montgomery county is west of
Indianapolis about 40 miles. The county seat of Montgomery county,
Indiana, is Crawfordsville. I believe John Worth continued to move west
along old route 136 from Indianapolis to Crawfordsville as the
population continued to move west and to meet the demand for
wagons.
Old route 136 passes through Danville, Illinois, from
Crawfordsville, Indiana. Danville, Illinois, is where the marriage record
for Chesterfield Worth (Doctor Dillion) and Lucy Jane Harmison is
recorded.
In Rush County, John Worth and family lived in Jackson
Township.
The tombstone reads as follows:

25 August 2005 RE-EVALUATION, FILE #21: JULIA ANN DRYSDALE

First three paragraphs:

Having looked at the three census years (1801, 1820, 1830) for the John and James
Drysdale families, I concur with your analysis regarding Julia Ann Drysdales
parentage. This is mostly based on her being the right age to be a female still in the John
Drysdale household in 1830.

However, I am less certain of the connection you make regarding John Drysdales
parentage, based on footnote 3. I dont see how this proves Johns fathers name.

Paragraph six:

Susan Lederers internet correspondence lacks a source for her material. Do you have
documentary proof of the marriage of John and Martha, as quoted in her e-mail?

Footnotes regarding Julia Anns marriage and also the Folger Manuscript are very
good, as are your conclusions drawn in the paragraph referencing footnotes 18 and 19.

I think that you are probably correct in believing that Mary Hiatt/Hyatt is either John
Worths first mother-in-law, or some other close kinswoman of his first wife Elizabeth.
She may have been caring for Johns child, which would have been her grandchild.
After his first wifes death, John Worth and his young daughter remained on the Hiatt
property. This is certainly logical, since John is listed as a wagon maker, not a farmer,
and would not have had the need for his own land. (One of my great-great
grandfathers in Iowa was a barrel maker and never owned land, making him very hard
to trace.)

Technically, John and Julia Ann Drysdale lived with Mary Hiatt, not vice versa, since
Mary Hiatt owned the land they lived on. I wonder how Julia Ann and Mary got
along? Two adult women in one household, with one holding the ace.the land!
Fascinating!

Moving on to John Worths children, it is difficult to prove Martha A., Mary E. and
Stephen L. as children of John and Julia Ann since Mary Jane may have brought one
or more of them into the marriage! Lets do the math. Julia Ann died 10 April 1856.
John remarried just a few months later, 1 January 1857. This is not unusual for that era,
since he was left with several young children who needed a mother.

Adalaska is listed as four in 1860 also as two in 1860; 13 in 1870; 21 in 1880. Therefore,
he has a birth date of possibly 1856, 1857, 1858, or 1859. He could have been born as
early as September of 1857, which would have made him a few months short of age
four in the 1860 census. There were a lot of children in the household in 1860. It would
be easy to make a mistake of a year or so in listing a childs age under those
circumstances. Note that the census taker got Adalaskas gender wrong on one of the
two census reports! (In your notes, where there are dual 1860 census entries, you
should enter both sets of data.) I do think it is safe to assume that Adalaska is a child of
John and Julia Anns.
More thoughts on whose children are whose:

Since Mary Jane was Mary Jane Lemon Stephens, supposedly, at the time of her
marriage to John Worth, the name Stephen becomes intriguing. Was Stephen named
for her late husband? Often when a woman with children remarried, the children were
listed with the stepfathers surname in censuses where they were minors living under
the same roof. Often as adults, male stepchildren revert to their fathers surnames. This
makes it much harder to determine parentage.

If one of the three mystery children is Mary Janes, I think it is Stephen, based on the
name Stephen, and the Stephens surname. That would make a total of seven children
for Mary Jane: Armilda, Stephen, Adalaska, Indiana, Ida, Eliza/Lydia, and Louisa B.
(Of course, Martha also is listed as having a mother born in Ohio in the 1870 census;
darn!)

Regarding Martha A. and Mary E. I doubt that Julia failed to produce at least one
child between Chesterfields birth in 1850 and her death in 1856, given her childbearing
pattern. I believe that Martha and Mary are most likely hers. This is only gut feeling on
my part.

This has been a really complex file, due to the marriages, re-marriages, dual censuses
and mystery children. Perhaps in time more documents will surface to help prove
conclusively who the parents of Martha A., Mary E., and Stephen were and who Mary
Jane Lemons husband was!

I will be tackling more files later this week, but wanted to get this one to you right
away.
