Mean Absolute Deviation

Mean Deviation Formula 0

The mean deviation is the first measure of dispersion. It is the average of absolute
differences between each value in a set of value, and the average of all the values of
that set.

The mean deviation is calculated either from mean or median, but only median is
preferred because when the signs are ignored, the sum of deviation of the sets taken
from median is minimum.

The formula to calculate Mean deviation are as stated below :

Below are the problems based on Mean deviation :

Solved Examples

Question 1: A student took 5 exams in a class and had scores of 93, 65,
85, 90, and 78. Find the mean deviation for her test scores ?
Solution:
Given:
N=5
x =
X
N
=
93+65+85+90+78
5
=
411
5
Mean = 82.2

Now lets subtract the mean from each score, take the absolute value
of each difference, total the absolute values and then divide by the
number of values.

X X

93 10.8 10.8
65 -17.2 17.2
85 2.8 2.8
90 7.8 7.8

78 -4.2 4.2
X = 82.2 X X =
42.8

So, Mean deviation = =

XX
N
=
42.8
5
= 8.56
By this we can say that on the average, this student's test scores
are deviated by 8.56 points from the mean.

Question 2: Calculate the mean deviation from mean of the following data.
Score : 21, 32, 25, 48, 30, 50, 75, 90, 55 ?
Solution:

First lets find the mean

That is, X =
X
N
=
21+32+25+48+30+50+75+90+55
9

=
462
9
= 47.333

Now lets subtract the mean from each score, take the absolute value
of each difference, total the absolute values and then divide by the
number of values.

X

21 -26.333 26.333
32 -15.333 15.333
25 -22.333 22.333
48 0.667 0.667
30 -17.333 17.334
50 2.667 2.667
75 27.667 27.667
90 42.667 42.667
55 7.667 7.667
X = X X =
47.33 162.668

So, Mean deviation =

XX
=
N
162.668
= 18.0742
9
By this we can say that on the average, the scores are deviated by
18.0742 points from the mean.
