CMST11500 Speech Outline

Topic/Organization: Women in STEM

Specific Purpose: The underrepresentation of women in the STEM industry is a growing issue where, as
time progresses fewer women are taking career paths in STEM especially in technology and computer
science specifically. IBM on the other hand has been in the news for their beneficial gender diversity
tactics with positive results.

I. Introduction
a. Attention-getter Connection to self, relate back to high school experience and inside
jokes
b. Butt of the jokes, all boys school
c. Made it obvious to me that this is an apparent issue not just in my small high school in
New Jersey but a global problem.
d. Thesis According to Research, when there is better gender representation a company
succeeds financially and efficiency wise. IBM has made and is honing a new way of
supporting and encouraging women in STEM for other tech companies to follow.
e. Preview I would like to bring to light the importance of sanctuary campuses and why they
need our support.

III. Intro to IBM IBM is seen as a leader in STEM for their efforts to empower women in
technology, through their hands-on developmental opportunities. Research shows a direct
relationship between financial gains and gender diversity. (IBM)
IV. How they did it
a. Evolving Organizational Culture at IBM Our focus on inclusion drives IBMers immediate
career environments. In these environments, employees are valued, empowered to
think freely, and encouraged to express themselves fully by bringing their whole selves
to work. To promote full engagement, we have established a number of initiatives to
embed a sense of inclusion into the corporate culture
b. Establishing Career Supports As an organization, IBM has relentlessly focused on
building and fostering an inclusive career environment. Therefore, IBM has been
strategic in its approach to giving women and underrepresented groups the
opportunities and resources needed to progress in their career and to fulfill the

V. Gender Diversity Generalized (Warner)
a. A new report from the National Student Clearinghouse looks at degrees in STEM fields
(science, technology, engineering and math) and finds that the share of STEM bachelors
degrees going to women ticked down over the past decade. The biggest decline was in
computer science, where women received 23 percent of bachelors degrees awarded in
2004 and just 18 percent in 2014. (Nimmesgern)

VI. Conclusion
a. Developmental programs are the start of cultural inclusion but real change is effected on
a larger level
b. In order for Gender Diversity to become prevalent within STEM companies needs to
change their culture, environment, and value to be beneficial towards women.
