Life in Two Cities

Yogyakarta and Malang located in Java. Specifically, Yogyakarta is located in South

Java, while Malang is located in East Java province. The population of Yogyakarta is bigger
than Malang, because Yogyakarta is larger. It has 3.185.800 km2 and Malang just has
110.0600 km2. Because the location and some reasons, Yogyakarta and Malang have different
things although has similar things too.
There are some similar things between Yogyakarta and Malang. For example, these
cities have a really cheap living cost. The living cost from both cities is different but it still
can be categorized as cheap living cost. Both of Malang and Yogyakarta still can buy food
with Rp10.000,00 or maybe lower depend on the kind of food that we buy. Beside of that,
Yogyakarta and Malang are places that have a lot of University, that makes these cities called
as students cities. Yogyakarta has Gajah Mada University, Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta
University, Yogyakarta State University and much more. And Malang has Brawijaya
University, State University of Malang, Muhammadiyah Malang University and much more.
Gajah Mada University and Brawijaya University is the one of most wanted University in
Indonesia. The other similar thing about Yogyakarta and Malang is they have a lot of tourism
destination. These cities have natural tourism and artificial tourism. For natural tourism,
Yogyakarta have natural tourism like Merapi Mountain, Jomblang Cave, Pindul Cave,
Wediombo Beach, Grojogan Sewu Waterfall and many more; while Malang have natural
tourism like Bromo Mountain, Coban Rondo Waterfall, Wonosari Tea Plantation, Kawi
Mountain, Coban Pelangi Watefall, Balekambang Beach, Ngliyep Beach, Sendang Biru
Beach and many more. For artificial tourism, Malang have artificial tourism like Jawa Timur
Park, Batu Night Spectaculer, Museum Angkut, Omah Kayu, Eco Green Park, Tiban Mosque
and many more; while Yogyakarta have artificial tourism like Museum De Mata and De
Arca, Sindu Kusuma Edupark, Jogja Bay Waterpark, Prambanan Temple, Kalasan Temple,
Gembira Loka Zoo, Taman Sari Water Castle, Funerals Imogiri and many more. Although
Malang is smaller than Yogyakarta, that does not make this city left behind. Malang has a lot
destination like Yogyakarta too.
A side from similarities, Yogyakarta and Malang have different things like climate,
food and language. First, the climate of Yogyakarta is really hot, with temperature about
28oC. Sometimes using a fan does not make better. Otherwise, Malang is really cold.
Espicially in Batu, the temperature of Malang is around of 24oC. It is still feel cold without
fan or air condationer. In Bromo you can feel the climate is really cold with temperature 13 oC
or lower. Then, about the food. Yogyakartas people really love sweet food. The traditional
food from Yogyakarta mostly have a sweet taste like Gudeg, Bakpia, Yangko, Geplak, Tiwul,
and Jadah Tempe. Gudeg is made from young unripe jack fruit and commonly served with
egg, chicken and krecek (beef skin). Jedah tempe is made from sticky rice and tofu or tempe
with sweet taste. Geplak is made of young coconut and sugar. While Malang have a savory
food. The taditional food from Malang, for the example, Orem-orem, Bakso bakar, Bakso
Malang, Rawon, and Cwie Mie. Orem-orem is traditional food from Malang that is made
from ketupat, slice of tempe, chicken with coconut milk sauce. Cwie Mie is traditional food
from Malang too, it is look like chicken noodle but cwie mie have more savory taste and the
chicken is smaller than chicken noodle. Bakso Bakar and Bakso Malang already well-known
for a lot of people. The last is Yogyakarta and Malang have different thing about language.
Actually, the traditional languge o these cities use are same, Javanese language. But, a lot of
people knew that east Java have really rude languange. A lot of people in East Java do not
know how to use Krama Inggil. Krama Inggil is Java language that is polite when in use in
daily converstion with older people. Yogyakarta and Central Java people is well known as
people that use language really well. They talk really slowly and softly.
It is really interesting to live in these cities. The different and the similarities thing in
Yogyakarta and Malang is really unique. The cities have their characteristics that not all of
them is same. But totally Malang and Yogyakarta have a beautiful place and kind people.
