Topic Selected: What does the research say about advantages and disadvantages of
distance education?

1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.
You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.
You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a
common theme or issue.
You don't need to critique your sources
You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)
You need to provide background information such as history and
definitions

Brief Literature Review:

Many articles studies discuss the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning. One
research titled The Advantages and Disadvantages of Teaching and Learning On-line
conducted a qualitative study of on-line teaching and learning in a rural community
college setting. Research questions focused upon the instructors' views of the benefits and
detriments of on-line teaching and learning, their views of the effects of online learning.
Two kinds of questions were used for interviews, open ended questions and initial data
analysis. The participants were given the opportunity to review their transcripts.
Questions were all based on the advantages and disadvantages of distant learning.

An article with the title of Navigating its advantages disadvantages and best practices
discusses distance learning to tribal scholars who must work or live in distant places. The
system is a flexible way for those who cannot make it to school premises and it intends to
widen its circle of diversified students. Another article entitled E-Learning Advantages
and Disadvantages through an experimentation shows how the ministry of education has
initiated a program to support teachers in their higher studies. Technology in education
used both videoconference and e-learning to provide high performance hardware in
education.
One more article with the title of Teaching beyond the Classroom Walls: The Pros and
Cons of Cyber Learning discussed the pros and cons of online learning and how distant
learning is growing worldwide due to its flexibility. They also focus on the rewards and
drawbacks of cyber learning. Last example, an article Online Learning: Through Their
Eyes investigates students perspective toward online learning. The article takes the
opinions of different students and how do they see e-learning in general and their impact
on their careers.

2. REFLECTION:
What is your personal opinion on this issue? Do you agree with the
research? If you agree or disagree, please explain why?
Provide examples/experiences regarding this issue from school
perspective or If you are not working in a school, from your profession. Be
specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1
paragraph)

Reflection: I agree with most of the articles and the studies that have been conducted
concerning this issue. Distant learning might have a lot of advantages as it can serve
many students who are not able to attend school due to some family issues or work
schedule and many other reasons. Many students from interviews stated that if it wasnt
for the facility of internet and online learning, they wouldnt be able to finish their higher
education.

On the other hand, distant learning can also have many disadvantages. One important
disadvantage is that students will not have the environment of a classroom, they wont be
able to interact with other colleagues like in a classroom and maybe learn new ideas and
get experiences from this interaction. When it comes to scientific projects, it would be
very hard to do these experiments individually without the presence of the teacher and the
whole students in a real class or lab environment. At the end of the day, distant learning
is made as a facility for those who cannot make it to a regular classroom and especially
for higher education purposes. It is up to the students to make up their mind and decide
what is suitable for them.
