Using the Internet, AUO library and other sources research a recent case
study (less then 5 years old) about a company which experienced major
organizational changes. Now consider that you are an organizational
behavior consultant assigned to help the company navigate and manage
the change. Write a report to your supervisor analyzing the reasons for
the change and discussing the following points in your report:
What was the internal or external pressure that caused the change?
Compare the driving force for the change to the specific types of
pressures noted in your reading assignments.
What organizational changes resulted from the pressure for
change?
Consider that there were probably forces within the company that
resisted the change. What might have been their rationale against the
change? Do you feel these are valid points? Why or why not?
Do you think that other organizations in the same industry would
have reacted in the same way? Why or why not?

Change in Organization

Al-tech Manufacturing has seen a downturn in the market which resulted

in a reduction of sales and net income. In a move to improve
profitability and reduce overall administrative expenses, senior
management has decided to merge with a former rival company (Border
Manufacturing). The offices of the two companies were merged which
necessitated some layoffs.
You are a manager with Al-tech. Before the merger you had a team of
twelve who were responsible for the administration of payroll. During
the merger, your boss was let go along with four of your team members.
You have two new team members (John and Kerry) from the Border
Company.
John and Kerry come from a different part of the country, have a
different work ethic and exhibit a different culture. They actively try to
engage the existing payroll administration team members in finding
ways to be more productive.
Your original team members response to these two new members
suggestions range from hostility to curiosity as they were used to simply
being told what to do.
Several members of your team have been adversely affected by the
change. For example, Bob has told you that he is actively looking for a
new job and Jills productivity has slowed. When asked why, she tells
you she wants to know, in writing, what she needs to be doing different
to meet the new reduced cost goal. Anne, who was the energetic one on
the team, is now concerned that she will be the next one to go and has
become very quiet.
It was your job to pull these team members together, to determine how
to do payroll for the merged company with less staff, and therefore to
reduce costs. And you succeeded!
Youve been asked to write an article for your company newsletter,
explaining what the situation was and how you succeeded in managing
the change to your team.
Directions:
1. Write a 3 to 4 page newsletter article as the manager of this
fictitious company with a team as described above. Include the
following points in this article:
1. The classification and explanation of the change as either first-
order or second-order.
2. The challenges that team members felt due to the downsizing and
the merger. Give two examples of each.
3. The risks you anticipated and the mitigation steps you planned in
dealing with the risks. Give an example of two risks, each with a
mitigation plan.
4. The types of resistance your team exhibited and what techniques
you used in dealing with each type. Give three examples.
5. The eight steps you took, using Kotters change management
model, to engage your team in making the transition successful.
Make sure to include at least 3 outside resources, one of which may be
your text, to justify your suggestions. Your report should be
professional and directed toward middle management.

Using the library, Internet and other sources, locate two examples of
mergers or acquisitions that failed. Be sure the articles contain enough
information about what actually happened in the failed merger or
acquisition so that you can answer the questions below.
Directions:
Write a review comparing the two unsuccessful mergers/acquisitions
you found. Address the following questions for each of the
mergers/acquisitions you chose:
1. What was the motive behind the merger/acquisition? What internal
and external factors impacted the merger/acquisition decision? Use
specific examples to justify your response.
2. Which of the two unsuccessful merger/acquisitions you reviewed
held the most risk of not working from the onset? Why? Give examples.
3. Did either company use metrics during the merger/acquisition
process to measure their progress? Describe and explain at least two
additional metrics which could have been used by each company in
monitoring their progress during the M&A process.
Read the following article: What makes a merger successful by Paul
Walker and David Hanna which describes a successful merger.
Comment on the following:

before the merger? Why was this important?
2. What management strengths and business process expertise did the
companies demonstrate that helped make the merger successful?
3. What role did the vision statement play in the success? Why is it
important to have a vision statement?
4. Compare the successful merger to one of the unsuccessful mergers
you found. What three actions did Sage and State of the Art do that the
unsuccessful merger did not do or did not do well?
