English 7 ~ Course Description

Ms. Drakos
Merrick Avenue Middle School

Course Objectives:
1. To introduce students to a variety of literary genres, including novels, short
stories, plays, and poetry, for comprehension, analysis, and appreciation
2. To improve vocabulary and spelling skills
3. To help students become more effective communicators through writing
and speaking
4. To help students develop emotionally and socially as a student in the
middle school with positive expression and an open mind

Course Requirements:
1. All students must come to class on time and prepared to work.

2. Students must always have the following with them:

A. A neatly organized binder, or section in a large binder, with three
dividers (literature, writing, other). All English work and only
English work should be kept here.
B. Pens (blue or black ink only). Any work turned in in pencil will not
be accepted.
C. An adequate amount of paper for class notes.
D. Any novel, assignment, or other materials that they will be referring
to during that class period.
E. An agenda for writing down all upcoming assignments, activities,
and assessments

3. Students must keep an accurate, up-to-date grade sheet in their binders at

all times. This must be signed after each new grade is recorded. An
unsigned grade sheet will count the same as a missed homework.

4. All assignments must be submitted on or before the due date.

Assignments must be written neatly on looseleaf paper in blue or black ink
or typed, unless otherwise specified. A proper heading, including
students name, date, and title of the assignment, should be at the top.

5. All homework assignments must be completed on time. Each student will

start each marking quarter with a homework average of 100. For each
assignment missed, five points will be deducted from that total. Any
student absent will be required to turn missed work in on their next day
back to school. Students may also lose homework points for coming to
class unprepared.

***Homework assignments will not only reinforce material discussed in class

and prepare you for upcoming lessons, but it can drastically improve your
quarterly grade as well!

6. Students are required to participate in all class discussions and activities.

In addition, students are expected to conduct themselves in an
appropriate manner and respect all others at all times.

7. Unit tests will always be announced several days in advance. Some

quizzes will be announced (such as vocabulary and spelling), and some
will not (such as those based on a previous nights reading assignment).
Always be prepared!

Any student absent on the day of a quiz or unit test will be required to
make it up as soon as possible. Make-up tests and/or quizzes will often
be different from the ones given in class.

8. Extra help will be available to students on Mondays and Tuesdays after

school and Tuesday mornings. This time can be used to make up work,
review a reading assignment, study for a test, or address any other
concern that you may have. Please take advantage of this time and come
as often as necessary.

9. Report card grades each marking quarter are based on the following:
A. Tests, quizzes, essays, projects, presentations, and all other
graded assignments
B. Class participation and preparedness
C. Homework
