For this, you need to look at the work of 2 different video installations 1 past and
one more current. There is examples of installation on U35 > LO1. One easier one to
talk about is Omar Fast 5000 Feet is the Best? due to what it is and where it was
installed, it helps to reinforce the meaning and relevance of it.
Omar fast: is video artists who currently lives and works in berlin. Previously to this he
was born and raised in Israel. He spent a decent amount of his teenage years in
New York while his father was completing medical degrees in both countries.
During his time spent in New York he was given a BFA award from a dual-degree
program at Tuffs-University and one from School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Both
based in Boston and received in 1955. During this time he also got a job doing
magazine layout. He met his wife who a German Designer was called Anuschka
Hoevener she was studying fashion in New York at this time.
Douglas Gordon: was born in September 1966. Gordon was a Scottish artist who won
a Turner Prize in 1996 and a Premio in the year 2000 at the 47th Venice Biennale. He
currently lives and works in Berlin. He won a hugo boss prize in 1998.
Omar fast: Fasts installation was called 5000 feet is the best? It followed a narrative
form throughout, the idea throughout the 30 minute film was showing the
perspective of war through a camera drone in the modern age we are living in now.
Throughout the film the camera was showing a Birdseye view shot going over a
warzone showing how and where they would drop the bombs. In previous war
everything was a lot more hands-on in the way that people were using handheld
guns etc
Douglas Gordon: Gordons installation was a 24hr slowed down stream of Alfred
Hitchcocks Psycho. Called 24 heures Psyco
The installation basically showed a frame by frame of the film almost like a extremely
slow motion picture. This enabled the viewer to experience and take in every detail
of each shot throughout the film if they were to watch the full 24hours. This is a way
of helping the viewer to one understand the details of each shot but also applicate
each detail more.
What type of technology is used in the installation? (TV, projector, speakers,
headphones etc..)
Omar Fast: Fast displayed his installation on a projector however the actual video
was captured on a drone.
Douglas Gordon: Douglas Gordon displayed his work for his installation
predominantly on projectors. It displayed a frame by frame of each individual shot
throughout the film psycho.
Omar Fast: The visuals that are played throughout the film are being shown
alongside narration. Meaning that Fasts installation followed a narrative form.
How does the space where the installation is being exhibited help to create
meaning?
By having a specifically designed space for the installation it should instantly give the
viewer hints as to what the video is about and the message it is trying to portray.
It is also another way of getting peoples attention and drawing them in before
watch the actual content. If the installation is being played in a big gallery with lots
of other installations and content, you are going to make yours look as visually
pleasing as possible to make people be more drawn to your work.
The audience can interact with the installation by generally following its design, for
example, if the installation is in a cosy den with cushions and blankets the artist
would want you to watch the video from that kind of atmosphere. Some installations
may just be projected for you to watch with no other added decorations it just
depends on how the artists wants you to experience their work.
